I really don't think he'll shift much at all. He's whole thing is about creating a movement. It isn't a regular campaign.
Once he gets the nomination which I think he will, can he move to the center like many candidates of the past have done and seriously Trump a run for his money? That worries me.
He won't want to, but like all Presidents he will eventually pivot to the center.
That's true, but it all depends. Is Trump hated enough to make the very left of center candidate appealing to the moderate Dem and possibly the independent voters? It is a gamble, and Bernie has to decide what is more important, staying true to his convictions or give a little to win the election.

I see a difference between Trump's populism and Bernie's populism too, Trump talked about the unfair trade deals over the years, Bernie talks about free stuff for all. They may both be populists, but they are different types.
But Bernie supports corrupt trade "deals" Bernie wouldn't be tough on China and he would encourage even more outsourcing. There is no free stuff for all, despite this constant conservative strawman. You would know this if you read or listened to Bernie speak. Its merely changing the way and how tax dollars are spent for the betterment of the majority of society instead of increasing the wealth and power for a powerful few.
