Can Sanders move to the center?

Once he gets the nomination which I think he will, can he move to the center like many candidates of the past have done and seriously Trump a run for his money? That worries me.
 
I think that would be hard for him because he does not believe or support the "center."
 
I doubt that is in his character tbh
 
I really don't think he'll shift much at all. He's whole thing is about creating a movement. It isn't a regular campaign.
 
I see a difference between Trump's populism and Bernie's populism too, Trump talked about the unfair trade deals over the years, Bernie talks about free stuff for all. They may both be populists, but they are different types.

That's true, but it all depends. Is Trump hated enough to make the very left of center candidate appealing to the moderate Dem and possibly the independent voters? It is a gamble, and Bernie has to decide what is more important, staying true to his convictions or give a little to win the election.
 
He won't want to, but like all Presidents he will eventually pivot to the center.

He won't get the nomination but of he did it would be no problem for him. He has voted with the establishment for 30 years. He does his big protests votes when it doesn't matter but he has never once been the deciding vote killing a piece of democratic supported legislation nor in passing a republican supported piece of legislation.
 
Old view: move to the center to win (for either side)! This was a comment Nixon made as I recall, 'run to the right in the primary, and the center in the general'.

A bit more updated view: in a time of plutocracy, run faux populism (Republicans, Bill Clinton, Obama) or real populism (Bernie) to win. Bernie isn't running against a 'centrist', he's running against the most corrupt president in history, who has been exposed as a right-wing fraud lying about his faux populism. Bernie needs to bring Democrats out more than he needs to move to the center.

No, he won't. He might have to compromise as president to pass the best thing he can, but that doesn't mean he isn't fighting for the right thing.
 

It's not a choice. Bernie supporting the agenda he does is why he'll win, moving to the center would hurt his chances. He gets to do the right thing and benefit politically. He's running against a monster, making that much more politically possible.
 
Sanders wants to tear down the United States in a massive violent revolution to turn American society into the chaos of a full economic collapse and social dystopia that he could cause as president. Kill off 10 or 20 million Americans and imprison twice that many and he can turn the USA into Cuba with himself as the all powerful Castro. That is his view of the perfect system of government as the stand-alone cult leader.

There is absolutely no indication in Bernie's history of him moving anywhere except further left, so, no, he won't.

Bernie's a true believer in the impossible economics, yet steeped in Marxist ideology, pablum that he's proffering to the believing uncritical thinking masses.

Heck, the Democrats and DNC have sent their NY hit man to torpedo him. I rather doubt that he'll even win the expected contested convention, same as 2016, with the same general election results as 2016.

Will he start cancelling some of his programs? No free money to pay off student loans?

There is no free stuff for all, despite this constant conservative strawman. You would know this if you read or listened to Bernie speak. Its merely changing the way and how tax dollars are spent for the betterment of the majority of society instead of increasing the wealth and power for a powerful few.

THat, of course, is what is known as a 'straw man'. It's not free stuff. It is taxes paid to a central pool for the common good. That's not 'free stuff'./
 
What's Bernies plan to make the Midwest and even the South the manufacturing giant again? Because I don't see his plans for that.

He doesn't have to. But likely will.

And it doesn't matter. Congress, if they do their job, still has to approve any potential laws. All the pres does is sign them.

So I guess it's old people vs young people.

Typically in elections, old people win. Young don't vote in the same %.

But in reality, it's the middle, non partisans, that really determine election outcomes.

Neither party has a enough support to win on their own.
