California woman who berated man wearing MAGA hat reported missing, believed to be in hiding

Driving someone into hiding for berating someone for wearing a hateful symbol is not surprising. One would expect that. Praising it goes against the values of this country of free speech and tolerance.

I see nothing hateful about saying you want to make America great again, unless you don't like America to begin with. As to your statement about free speech, you do realize that applies to all people, her and the person wearing the hat both were exercising their right of free speech.

You need to understand that the left wing interpretation of "freedom" is different than the right wing version. Those on the left believe that freedom only exists when one no longer needs to be exposed to danger, differing opinions, requirements to provide for one's self, etc. Essentially, the left wing interpretation of "freedom" is that of a life unencumbered by responsibility, need or any other encumbrances upon one's person. If someone else is encumbered then that's their problem but that other entity has no right to act in a way that obligates anyone else to do think or observe anything not of their own choosing.

When was America not great in your opinion?

What she did to the man in the hat was not ok. Making threats against her, if that is what caused her to go into hiding, is not ok either. People really need to be careful about bringing fights online. It escalates things well beyond the scale of the original conflict. The weaponization of social media is getting scary.

A few occasions, but they were corrected with new elections, none you would agree with.

Name the occasions. Be particular.

Were the many who threatened her after the fact also exercising their 1st Amendment rights?

The hate doesn't represent America being great again. That's a slogan for Trump, who not only personifies hatred, but now, thanks to the Mueller report, tyrant as well. Americans should confront anyone wearing that hat and ask them if they think the president is above the law. do they realize that Trump represents a strand of nationalism that appeals to Nazis.

On of Timothy Snyder's lessons on tyranny includes: "Take responsibility for the face of the world. Notice the swastikas and the other signs of hate. Do not look away and do not get used to them. Remove them yourself and set an example for others to do so."

When wearing a particular hat would get you assaulted.

She did not assault him.

I have a friend who volunteers every election at her local polling place. She had to tell a man that his MAGA hat was a political ststement and was not allowed inside the polling place and he would have to leave, remove it, and come back. He and a couple of others (not wearing the hats) called her bitch and worse, and threatened her with bodily harm. She had to call the police, ffs. And when the polls closed, her husband (not someone to be messed with, btw) had to come escort her home.

Was that exercising free speech on their part?

Nope.

You just need to look at Trump's campaign strategy when he wants to excite the base. It's to use racism, almost exclusively. He attacks black football players immigrants, Mexicans, Latinos, Africa, Muslims, Puerto Rico.

Trump clearly believes his base is largely composed of racists. If he didn't he would change his strategy. So it's fair to say that the hat representing that racism is a hateful symbol.

America has been great since 1789, when our constitution was ratified and we really became a nation. Go ahead, refute that. Be specific.

You mean 'berated'? Are you kidding?

I am not kidding. While this case involved no physical assault, many other cases have included physical assault. The point remains the same - accept the fact that others prefer different candidates and issue positions. To assume that a person is a racist simply because they chose to wear a MAGA hat is foolish - to publicly berate and/or assault that person over such an assumption does not make America (or any other place) better.

Your example of a hostile reaction by MAGA hat wearer's does not make the reverse any more acceptable.

A maga hat is most definitely a sign of racism just like a southern battle flag is!

Then your main beef is that you feel the slogan represents Trump, not the slogan itself, that there is not hate in the slogan itself.

No different that those on the left, including those on this forum who responded with hate towards the person wearing the hat and others who would choose to wear it and suggestions of what should be done to them.

The hat wearer had First Amendment rights too; did you defend him?

Did this woman threaten the man in the MAGA hat, or just tell him what she thought of him? Did she even use profanity? From what I read, the worst she did was call him a racist, and shout that out to everyone in that Starbucks. My friend was threatened with actual physical harm, even an "I ought to shoot you." Berating someone is not the same as threatening to shoot someone. It isn't whataboutism on my part, since I used my friend's incident to illustrate the difference.
