The California Attorney General’s office confirmed that it released hundreds of thousands of gun owners’ private information, including their full names, races, and home addresses. Some Judges and Police Officers were among those identities that were leaked.

This is an outrage as many people are now in danger because a gun thief now has 250,000 names and addresses where guns.

The AGs office says there is an "investigation" underway. Screw investigations. Attorney General Rob Bonta needs to be charged, convicted and sent to prison for the breach of trust and potentially endangering hundreds of thousands of law-abiding gun owners, Judges and law enforcement. OR he needs to resign.

“Any unauthorized release of personal information is unacceptable. We are working swiftly to address this situation and will provide additional information as soon as possible.” said a spokesperson for AG Rob Bonta

Incredibly, instead of apologizing, Bonta said “Transparency is key to increasing public trust between law enforcement and the communities we serve. As news of tragic mass shootings continue to dominate the news cycle, leaving many with feelings of fear and uncertainty, we must do everything we can to prevent gun violence.”

“One of my continued priorities is to better provide information needed to help advance efforts that strengthen California’s commonsense gun laws. Today’s announcement puts power and information into the hands of our communities by helping them better understand the role and potential dangers of firearms within our state.”

Basically, he's saying that he is justified in the leak. Judges should demand that Bonta be brought to justice. Publicly. Everyone needs to see what happens when elected officials violate the public's trust.

The California Rifle & Pistol Association (CRPA) said:

“Vindictive sore loser bureaucrats have endangered people’s lives and invited conflict by illegally releasing confidential private information. CRPA is working with several legislators and sheriffs to determine the extent of the damage caused by DOJ’s doxing of law abiding gun owners. Litigation is likely.”

Leak means it was intentional. Is there proof that this was intentional or is the OP lying once more? Anyone know the truth?

Investigation first.

Investigation first.
Nothing to investigate. The deed is done, and the culprit admitted to doing it. A felonious breach of privacy that could potentially endanger the lives (and/or property) of those whos names and addresses were published.

Lying (any doubt?)- California Department of Justice

On the afternoon of June 27, 2022, DOJ posted updates to the Firearms Dashboard Portal. DOJ was made aware of a disclosure of personal information that was accessible in a spreadsheet on the portal. After DOJ learned of the data exposure, the department took steps to remove the information from public view and shut down the Firearms Dashboard yesterday morning. The dashboard and data were available for less than 24 hours.

“This unauthorized release of personal information is unacceptable and falls far short of my expectations for this department,” said Attorney General Rob Bonta. “I immediately launched an investigation into how this occurred at the California Department of Justice and will take strong corrective measures where necessary. The California Department of Justice is entrusted to protect Californians and their data. We acknowledge the stress this may cause those individuals whose information was exposed. I am deeply disturbed and angered.”

Yesterday afternoon Bonta’s office acknowledged that in addition to the concealed carry records, which included the full names, home addresses, and drivers license numbers of all those who had applied for a concealed carry permit (not just those who were approved), other databases run by the AG’s office were also open and available to download for an unspecified amount of time this week.

  • Overall, we rate Bearing Arms as Right-Biased based editorial advocacy that favors the right. We also rate them Mixed for factual reporting due to the occasional use of poor sources and a failed fact check.
These media sources are moderately to strongly biased toward conservative causes through story selection and/or political affiliation. They may utilize strong loaded words (wording that attempts to influence an audience by using appeal to emotion or stereotypes), publish misleading reports, and omit information reporting that may damage conservative causes. Some sources in this category may be untrustworthy. https://mediabiasfactcheck.com

And it still offers no proof of your claim - "the culprit admitted to doing it." Your bias makes one easily duped into believing lies and propaganda.

You're trying to change facts by impeaching the source of the facts.

Fact: approx. 250K names and addresses of California gun owners were unlawfully published by the CA Attorney General on the website.

Fact: Among those 250K names published were judges and police officers.

Fact: The AG's office acknowledged the release, and stated an investigation is underway.

Fact: Ultimately, AG Rob Bonta is responsible for this data breach - regardless of whether it was by his hand, or one of his staffers.

My opinion: Attorney General Rob Bonta loathes gunowners and this data breach was a vindictive act. This was an unthinkable breach of trust, and Bonta should resign immediately. I have zero faith in AG Bonta, and I think that many judges and police officers (who's names and addresses were published) have lost thier faith as well.

From the article

Officials said the information was publicly available on a spreadsheet for less than 24 hours after the department updated its Firearms Dashboard Portal on Monday afternoon.

First step will be to see which account was attached to publishing this file to their portal, then to go into the surrounding details and procedures. It may be malicious or it may be that this file went something external facing versus internal facing. For example, such a file would be very useful for the police and courts to have updated copies of.

Just curious, what law do you think was violated?

Liability and Privacy laws.

If ANY harm comes to one (or more) of those 250K California gun owners as a result of the Attorney General's data breach, then the State of California (taxpayers) would be liable for any and all damages.

Also, there could be incidental torts (damages). For example, say that a gun owner didn't want his family to know that he owned a gun and a CCW permit. His family sees his name on the website list, and they start asking question, and challenge him to explain why he needs a gun and a CCW. His answers aren't good enough, and the anti-gun family estranges him.

These too are damages which the AG would be liable for.

What happened was not one of those "ooops - sorry - it won't happen again - heh heh" things. It was a very serious offense, and could potentially endanger the lives (and/or property) of those who's names and addresses were released.

Specifically, which state or federal law do you believe was violated?

More lunacy from the left.

This event sounds more like a screw up than it does an intentional act.

The investigation is appropriate. If it turns out the gun ownership information was maliciously published then the perpetrator should certainly be prosecuted. But from what has been reported so far it appears more like some software coder just fat fingered a security access line in the program during an application upgrade.

If the investigation reveals that there was a download of that database during the 24 hour window it was exposed...then the problem becomes more complex.

The outrage is remarkable. Very likely the career of Attorney General Bonta is about to end. In contrast is this about the unrestricted, government permitted, legal hands off, data collection by the nations crisis pregnancy centers (cpc)AKA pregnancy resource centers(pac)

"In 2017, Heartbeat International (a PRC) rolled out a new data-collection system for its pregnancy centers. “Big data is revolutionizing all sorts of industries,” its marketing materials trumpeted. “The data your organization collects needs to work not just for you, but for the rest of the pregnancy help movement.” Major pregnancy-center networks now use data-collection interfaces to track women who interact with their organization in person, on the phone, or online........ These data-collection systems allow pregnancy centers to create “digital dossiers” of women, according to a 2020 report by U.K.-based civil rights group Privacy International, which warned that while these technologies “collect and centralise vast amount of people’s private information,” it’s unclear who the data is shared with."
https://time.com/6189528/anti-abortion-pregnancy-centers-collect-data-investigation/

These pregnancy resource centers do not have to follow federal privacy laws, including the HIPAA privacy law. Those are the laws that you sign in the doc's office saying he and his staff will protect your medical records and keep them from being shared with the public, with health insurance corporation or any other organization.

Why does society take action immediately so that gun owners information is protected but women's reproductive lives are fair game for religious organizations and to whomever they choose to sell the data.

I take them BOTH seriously. What steps have you, or other pro-choice Americans, taken to publicize this information? Great incentive for a woman to avoid these places like Hazmat dumps.
