You're right, it was mis-leading.Originally posted by RightatNYU:
Your title is misleading. Nobody has been arrested, and there is almost no chance that anyone ever will be.
CIA agents alleged to have kidnapped and beaten a German national who was abducted and held prisoner in Afghanistan under the extraordinary rendition programme.
Khaled el Masri, a German of Lebanese descent, was bundled into an unmarked bus while on holiday in Macedonia in December 2003 and flown to a US jail in Afghanistan. He was released in May 2004.
Mr Masri alleges that he was beaten and mistreated by US interrogators, even though it was clear he was innocent. He says that on his release he was "dumped like a piece of luggage" in Albania and told by his abductors that they "wanted to hear nothing more" about him.
You're right, it was mis-leading.
With that being said, do you think it is okay for us to be doing this in someone else's country? We are supposed to stand for the rule of law. You know, innocent until proven guilty and all that. Do you support renditions?
Well its not normal for people to be kidnapped by one country in another country
and this aint the first time the CIA has been accused of this in the last few years.
I see your point.Originally posted by RightatNYU:
Let's lets establish a baseline here -
You know that every single nation of consequence maintains an active spy agency, correct?
You know that every single one of these nations has people in the majority of other nations, using fake names, false passports, and committing espionage, correct?
You know that the CIA estimates that in the commission of this foreign espionage, it breaks "extremely serious laws" 100,000 times per year, and that the vast majority of nations operate with the same regulations and same disregard for foreign laws, correct?
You know that when uncovered, none of these incidents are handled publicly, unless the press forces it out, correct?
So, if you acknowledge all of the above, why is this incident such a big deal? Why pretend like you're surprised? **** like this happens with regularity around the world.
Yes, it's a shame that they nabbed an innocent guy. Yes, I wish it hadn't happened. Yes, I hope they'll be more careful next time. But I'm not going to sit here, gasp and shake my head in disapproval like I'm a naive sunday school teacher who was just informed that her students are smoking outside the church.
It's how the world works. I accept that and move on to worry about matters of consequence.
