PROVO, Utah) — Some students and faculty on one of the nation's most conservative campuses want Brigham Young University to withdraw an invitation for Vice President Dick Cheney to speak at commencement later this month.

Critics at the school question whether Cheney sets a good example for graduates, citing his promotion of faulty intelligence before the Iraq war and his role in the CIA leak scandal.

The private university, which is owned by the Mormon church, has "a heavy emphasis on personal honesty and integrity in all we do," said Warner Woodworth, a professor at BYU's business school.

"Cheney just doesn't measure up," he said.

LOL I agree--Cheney is not an example of integrity. I am so happy to see that some of the more conservative folks agree.

I'm proud of any conservative that comes forward and tries to take this movement back.

True Conservatism = Honesty, Integrity, Personal Responsibility, and rational thought.

Dick Cheney has none of those qualities.

I think the ousting of the religious right is going to go a long way toward helping you realize that goal.

Neocon's = Conservative

Right?

Just the most extreme of the RR need to go. Pat Buchanon is waiting for them with open arms.

Well, I am a firm believer that religion can be a part of public life but it should not in any way, shape, or form be permitted into public policy. The Religious Right, by its foundation, should be banned from consorting or lobbying in any way with our federal, state, and local governments.

I strongly disagree. Religion has every right to be a factor in lesser government.

I respect your opinion on it - but I don't respect how the constitution has been twised to fit your views. Seperation was only intended for federal government activity. to make it go further a new amendment is needed. What has been done instead is piggy back on an amendment intended to stop the practice of racism in the states.

Let me present this: why would a federal constitution need to be involved if we are talking about the issue at the state level?

I am not sure how you arrive at the separation clause piggy backing on the 14th amendment? Please explain.

Looks like the protest at BYU went off quite peacefully.

BYU NewsNet - Editorial: "Contrasting Protests"

If only the idiots at places like American University would take a leaf out of their book and learn how to conduct a dignified protest, unlike their treatment of Rove a couple days ago.

Cheney should be allowed to speak. He is a great American, and could help the professor learn a few things about the real world.

Just to clear up any potential confusion...I really was not trying to be obtuse in my questions to you. I don't see the connection between the 14th amendment and the wall of separation. I am sincerely hoping you show me something I did not see before.

You obviously believe this and I believe it when I sit down to analyze the issue. However, Cheney entered the public arena in a position that requires one to be somewhat accountable to the whimsical loyalties of the masses. If he is failing in maintaining any kind of unity, then it is time to call him to task for that alone.

The elected officials serve the people and should constantly be vigilant of alienating our opinions. I sincerely believe Cheney has lost any sense of this primitively democratic belief. For that alone, he is subject to question.

LOL Yeah, he is a great American. *sarcasm * You can't be serious.

Cheney doesn't need to be responsible for the ignorance of the pant@@hitting few. Cheney hasn't lost any sense of democratic belief, he is a walking example of democratic belief, rising into politics from the private sector, serving his country as CIA Director and now V.P. It's just amazing to see the B.S. coming from our universities who don't know a damn thing about the real world, or why we need guys like Cheney. The reality is we need guys like him on that wall. We want guys like him on that wall prepared to do whatever it takes to protect democracy. Who else is going to do it. Al Gore? Geez. Thank you Cheney for your service.

Of course I'm serious. What did Cheney do that is soooooo wrong? On second thought, he shouldn't go to BYU, as they are not worthy to have his intellect.

I would highly recommend you get a reality check. D ick Cheney, is that you behind this "Awesome!" name?

At face value, there isn't any connection between the 14th and the 1st.

SCOTUS however - linked the two together.

The 1st amendment states congress may make no law regarding religion yet the courts ruled that the 14th amendment in combo with the 1st Amendment applies to states and lower forms of government as well.

It completely contradicts the intent of the 1st and 9th amendment - but that is how SCOTUS ruled and it is now a matter of law - Intent be damned.

The point of this thread is that BYU is one of the most conservative Universities around and certainly one of, if not the most, Bush supporting school in America.
If Cheney is getting this type of reaction from the "home crowd".....it says something about how the rest of the Country feels about him and this administration.

I wouldn't go that far, the home crowd doesn't have to be the "home crowd" on every issue. I know conservatives who don't support Cheney. I'm not one of them however, and I disagree that because we feel a certain way about Cheney that he shouldn't be allowed to speak.

Yes it's me APS and were watching you, and listening to your telephone conversations. Were the evil republican's. whaaaa, haaa, whaaa, haaa

Yes it does--that he has NO CREDIBILITY whatsoever.

Please tell us what Cheney did that was sooooooo wrong and the evidence which supports it? The misinformed professor claimed he "supported faulty intelliegence", the same that everyone else used and not evidence Cheney had any reason to question it. Then he said something about Cheney's role in the Plame issue when he had not role. Maybe we should protest the professor for being so misinformed.
