Buying my first gun.

So am going home on leave today and when I get back to Washington am going to buy my first personal firearm. I'm looking at getting a Springfield Armory 1911 .45 Mil Spec or the GI model. Also am going to get my CC permit which also allows me to open carry it loaded. God Bless the 2nd amendment:mrgreen:

THE springfield armory brand is very good-sometimes the finish is a bit rougher than similar KIMBERS but once you shoot it a few hundred times they work well. I would RECOMMEND one with a "beavertail" grip safety and an extended thumb safety over the one that looks just like the GI model (I believe the Mil Spec do not have those). One thing I don't like about the SA Mil spec is that they have this funky safety that is in the mainspring housing that you can lock THe problem is that mainspring does not have the traditional mainspring cap on it and if you completely strip down the weapon that makes it a bit tougher to put it back and I think its ultimately less reliable than the other brands.

Look at several models and compare ones with the "beavertail" grip safety versus the traditional GI one.

NO problem-given that I own about 25 different versions of the 1911 (Para high cap, 7 different Kimbers, four different SAs, a real WWI colt, a current colt, a Gold Cup, 2 Les baers, 2 RR competition rigs, etc) as well as the glock and SW MP 45 I tend to be up on them

Carrying a single action? Not thrilled about that. Definately get the 1911; trick it out as you like and enjoy it (it's my favorite), but I don't think carrying it is great also because of size and weight. I'll compromise on weight to go from .38 to .357 in a revolver frame, but not for .45 rounds. I think it is iffy with hollowpoints; I think flying ashtrays are great and I preferred Black Talons in mine, but you better watch the feed ramp and the mag spring tensity.

I'm thinking medium or small frame revolver for general carry and the ashtray thrower for the range. I would consider those two handguns the basic two to start with for anyone. If you don't like wheelguns, I'd recommend a double-action Sig or Smith (either in compact 40) with FMJ (unless you are really happy with the feed) for general carry.

Regarding the revolver I'd go with a small frame .357 and Glasers. I think I want it with a hammer, but I'm not sure - that depends on carry.

My third weapon would be an AR15 (tricked but standard iron sights) and fourth a pistol-grip shotgun (and a hacksaw in case of zombies) with a drum.

Not going to get into a Glock vs. 1911, 9mm vs. .45, pissin contest. If you want something that will stand up and not require a lot of love and care. Glock,pick it up, it works. Period.


By the way Marine.The last gun i saw was 155 or a 105 howitzer.MoS..0811 here...we were taught that....well i,ll leave that to your imagination.:mrgreen:
