All I can say is excuse me for being an American. Sorry, but the song sucks. Words are changed in the National Anthem to suit those who are non citizens. Also, a salsa beat is added. Now I do remember the uproar when Jose Feliciano sang the National Anthem many year ago at the World Series, but I dont really have a problem with that. What I have a problem with is people attempting to substitute what I consider a non American imitation of that song for the real one. We are offshoring enough of our way of life to foreign countries. We do NOT need a foreign National Anthem at this time, or ever.

Just my 2 cents on the matter. Now I will kick back and watch the flames which are about to come my way. But the way I honestly see this is that

1) If someone wants to be an American, they should ACT like an American.

2) Lawbreakers (illegal aliens) are NOT Americans, and should not be given the right to muck with a song which represents American values. Let them change the Mexican National Anthem instead, if they wish to do so.

Article is here.

Re: Illegal Alien National Anthem Makes its Debut

I haven't heard the song yet, but I heard this story a couple days ago. You'll get no flame from me, Dan. I'm in total agreement.

They want both Anthems to be "official". And let me rephrase your last statement with something a little more polite. To them I say:

"Go ye forth and multiply".

In not so many words, of course. :)

Re: Illegal Alien National Anthem Makes its Debut

I think we should micromanage the national anthem, I mean to say that it would be ok to sing the national anthem in Spanish in East Los Angelus where the population is predominantly Mexican-American, Hispanic.

In Chinatown of course it could be sung in Chinese, etc, etc, etc.

My point being that it should not be the federal gov'ts business how the anthem should be sung. It should be a State's Rights choice.

Let the people, whatever the majority, decide. In fact, forget State's Rights, make it Micromanage's Rights. I live in an area where the school children recite the Pledge of Alligence in Spanish. Whatever. The children there are mostly from Spanish-speaking parents.

Death to the old-guard I say. Death to English-only!

If I might offer an example of why it matters: I pulled up to the drive thru window at McDonalds the other day here in middle America, USA. The employee and I could not comminicate because I did not speak Spanish and she did not speak English. I had to request an English speaking fast food restaurant employee on order to complete my transaction. Hello?

Forgive me, but I fail to see how some muicians recording a song has anything to do with you getting a side of fries. IMHO, they're two quite distinct topics.
People record songs all the time. Big Whoop.

The producers prob'ly paid Malkin to help w/ the publicity.

Re: Illegal Alien National Anthem Makes its Debut

I'm with you, Simon. Nobody is trying to "change" the official National Anthem, someone just decided to record a version in Spanish. A lovely way to distract us from important things.

I would have complained to the manager. Truly sad.

Re: Illegal Alien National Anthem Makes its Debut

It looks like some people care and some people don't...

I say we go to ArmyTimes.com and vote on it...

Re: Illegal Alien National Anthem Makes its Debut

I think its offensive. We do not have an official language in this country. However, the National Anthem was written in English and was meant to be sung in English. Its not just some pop or folk song that can be sung in any language you want. Its the national anthem of the United States of America.

Just the same, I heard an NPR story on it today, and they were interviewing some Spanish Language DJ down in LA. Evidently, the majority of hispanics are offended by the Spanish version as well.

Re: Illegal Alien National Anthem Makes its Debut

Why shouldn't all Americans be offended by this obscene gesture to change American culture! I'm disgusted by so called americans that allow others to push thier way into our nation. I will stand up with all those willing to drive these invaders back to thier hell hole!

National Anthem Sung in Spanish Gets at Heart of Immigrant Debate

Instead assimilating into country illegals and foreigners bastardize our national anthem.

WASHINGTON - President Bush is prone to slip in a little Spanish and has a younger brother - Florida Gov. Jeb Bush - who is fluent. But when it comes to the national anthem, the president said Friday, he is a purist.

"I think the national anthem ought to be sung in English," Bush told reporters in the Rose Garden. "And I think people who want to be a citizen of this country ought to learn English and they ought to learn to sing the national anthem in English."

Bush's comments came in response to a question about whether he believed the national anthem would "hold the same value" if sung in Spanish.

"No, I don't," replied Bush, who is the first president to have given a Saturday radio address in Spanish.

The question arose as "Nuestro Himno" (Our Anthem), a Spanish-language version of The Star-Spangled Banner, made its debut Friday on Spanish-language radio stations.

I have to say that I commend Bush for saying this. You want to be an American citizen? You learn the English language and you sing our National Anthem in English, damn it!

I'm all for ethnic pride and preservation of ethnic and cultural identity. But if you want to become an American citizen, the pre-requesit is to be able to speak the official language. You have a majority of your own ethnicity in a certain area or areas? Tough luck, the US official language is English, the rest of us did, why can't you?

:dohIs that what I did? :doh There goes my liberal bias.

Re: Foreigners bastardize our national anthem.

Wasn't it recorded by a British artist? Yes, it should be sung in English. I am not up in arms about the recording though. I will continue to sing it in English. I do think immigrants should learn the language.

The thing is, in a capitalistic market economy, assimilation isn't a priority. That is why many places require bilingual people to qualify for a job. Anyone who has worked in the restaraunt industry(and other fields) in the urban areas knows that it is much easier to communicate if you know Spanish. Companies also market to Spanish speaking people.

Re: Foreigners bastardize our national anthem.

I don't care so much that it's in Spanish as I do that they changed the lyrics in a couple of the verses to promote thier agenda.

Re: Foreigners bastardize our national anthem.

About our national anthem:

It MUST be sung in english.

Therefore, by process of logic, this other so-called "national anthem", when sung in spanish, is not our national anthem.

It's just a song sung to the tune of our national anthem (sort of).
