Bush orders records seized in FBI raid sealed for 45 days
BY JAMES GORDON MEEK
New York Daily News

WASHINGTON - President Bush injected himself Thursday into the standoff between his prosecutors and lawmakers livid over an FBI raid on a House office mired in a bribery scandal.

In an unprecedented order, the President instructed Solicitor General Paul Clement to hold evidence the FBI seized in a weekend raid on the Capitol Hill office of Rep. William Jefferson, D-La.

"I am directing the Department of Justice to seal all the materials . . . for the next 45 days and not to allow access to anyone involved in the investigation," Bush said.

Full article is here.

Um, I didn't even know this was *possible*. Ya "The Dept. Of Justice" (tm) is in the executive branch but come on, the president interjecting himself into the law enforcement process like Dubya the Lone Ranger. "Now hold them records there Missy and let's just think about this."

That's really strange. The investigation was
a) a criminal investigation
b) an investigation over a democrat, not republican
.... just strange.
Then sealed but only for 45 days? Why? what will be different 45 days from now? Are some pieces of evidence going to miraculously disappear now?

This is strange. Is Bush trying to curry favor with Congress because the republicans are furious with him for his stance on immigration? If Jefferson isn't guilty, I will be shocked. The man should resign. How he will be able to get out of this is beyond me. I just don't see it happening.

This almost seems like obstruction of justice (as weird as that may sound).

What's really strange is that Pelosi and Hastert released a joint statement condemning the search.

I think Repubs were also somewhat furious over the seperation of powers issue the FBI search brought up. As well they should be, because it means they can be searched too.

This is how deep the corruption goes.
"FBI FBI get down on the floor we've got a warrent to search your premise"
Congressional member:
"You didn't tell me in advance you were coming, I haven't even had time to shred any of the condeming evidence against me. That's unconstitutional, go back to your HQ."

"Uh, sorry sir, we'll call ahead next time."

This is just total bs.

Apparently, there is nothing in the Constitution that says you cannot raid a Congress person's office. I believe there is an understanding that you cannot arrest a Congress person while they are on the "floor." But there's nothing to say that the executive branch cannot (after obtaining a warrant from a judge) go into a Congress person's office. While our lawmakers deserve some respect, when you have the other 2 branches of our government in agreement, I think that's all that is needed.

On a separate note, there was a rather interesting editorial in the New York Times (I know you cons hate this periodical) pointing out how the repubs contesting THIS incident is a joke. It asked, "Where have they been for the last 5 years?" while our President has walked all over executive power and ignored laws passed by Congress (FISA). Yeah, where the hell have they been?

The contesting of this is based upon the fear of these Congress people being next.......They don't give a rat's butt about Jefferson.

Jefferson will be convicted even if the evidence is thrown out. The money in the freezer sealed his fate. How dumb is he? Maybe he thought the Feds would think it's leftovers.

The 45 days will be enough time to resolve any jurisdictional disputes. As long as the integrity of the evidence is safe, I think it the responsible thing to do.

ANAV, how this man can claim he is innocent is beyond me. You asked above "How dumb is he?" Do you think he thinks we're as dumb as he is to believe that he is innocent? Not only was he wrapping the $$ in tinfoil, he had put it in frozen meal boxes. Those are actions of someone who has something to hide.

The congress has already backed down. There will be some sort of formality agreeded to so if it ever happens again, such as the Hill Police aiding in the serving of the warrant so everyone can save face over the matter. I think Bush did the right thing and cooled things down so that the congress could 'reconsider' it's stand.

*%!@ the Hill Police !
*%!@ saving face !

Bush should have _nothing_ to do with this. The President stepping in over some hurt egos in a criminal case , what's going on here ?

I don't believe there is any problem with the Sep. of Powers and if there is it is not the job of the President who is certainly not an expert on Constitutional Law to step in.

This is what the Supreme Court is for !

Congressmen are continuing to enjoy "the letter of the law" in a way you and I *never* will.

Gotta love how you're turning this into a scandal involving a Democrat accepting a bribe into a scandal about the president. First the Dems are p!ssed because the President is violating the separation of powers and now they're pissed because he's not violating them enough, can Bush ever win with you people?

Anyone that questions the actions of President Bush is obviously a liberal and/or democrat. ;)

Did I say he was a Democrat? What's at issue here is the uncanny ability of some people to turn any scandal into a Bush scandal. You guys are skewing the issue by bringing up Bush, this is about a congressmen taking a bribe, not Bush.

Dumb dumb dumb dumb...

Look at the topic of the thread : " Bush orders records seized in FBI raid sealed for 45 days "

This isn't about the dude who took the bribes. He's guilty as hell. This is about Bush interjecting himself into the law enforcement venue. I didnt "bring bush into this" BUSH brought himself into this.

Jesus, do you love him that much ?

"oh oh , he only hits me cause he loves me"

get a grip

The evidence will be used against Jefferson, not to worry. This will be gone next week.

I don't believe in the politicians or political parties of the "big two" that dominate American "politics".

Bush / Kerry ?

Cousins ?

Same frat house ?

The American elite ?

Some choice.

Other then this being a direct assertion that MA is a dem by your behalf, I don't see how this can be missinterpretted any other way.
Now if you don't assert that he's a dem then you're making another one of your famous red herrings.
