How far did Bush go when he questioned the patriotism of prominent Republicans? Too far, but I will also state that Bush went too far when he originally said the same of Democrats. Because of the outrage at Bush that has now resulted from this kind of rhetoric, Bush seems to be finally softening his stance.

President Bush has now come out and stated that Democrats are just as patriotic as Republicans, and has taken a conciliatory stance. That is a good thing, since the hubris he has caused by questioning the patriotism of other Americans has been tearing this nation apart.

If he means what he said, then our leaders can finally get down to the business of governing, and dealing with real issues, instead of acting like Joseph McCarthy.

Bush puts 'ic' back in 'Democrat Party'

Bush puts 'ic' back in 'Democrat Party' - Yahoo! News

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - Relying on self-deprecating jokes, unusual candor and outright flattery, President Bush on Saturday wooed lawmakers he not only needs but will have to answer to in the final two years of his presidency.

Bush had not seen fit to attend a Democratic congressional retreat since 2001, his first year in office. But the new political reality that has Democrats in charge of Capitol Hill for the first time in a dozen years changed his mind. When he appeared before House Democrats at a Virginia resort, he seemed to be trying to make up for lost time.

Follow up to the "-ic" problem.

I posted about this earlier in the day, but lets go with your thread, because I like your article better. :) I will post here what I posted there.

And people say he's not a smart politician.

He's not. If he had been, he would have acted graciously before he was forced to deal with a Democratic majority in congress. Now, he just looks humbled, and appears to be polite simply because he has no other choice.

Also, smart politicians can get above a 35% approval rating average.

Re: Bush puts 'ic' back in 'Democrat Party'

He smiles and make nice better than anyone while all the while making nasty plans behind closed doors. Fool me once, shame on you, fool me 350 times... never mind, most of these DC folks have no shame.

LOL You should clarify that as "politicians" as opposed to "folks." In 2004, Washington, DC, went to Kerry by 90%. They knew what they were doing..... ;)

No, smart politicians get what they want done, and ensure that they don't get voted out of office. He's done a pretty damn good job of that so far.

Yeah, like Hitler. He was a great leader.... oh wait.....

Did it ever occur to you that maybe we want leaders that don't change their policies after each opinion poll?

I want a leader that is going to be able to make the choices that might not always be popular but that he or she believes are the right things to do.

Clinton may have had higher approval ratings, but he was also one of the weakest American presidents in history. Playboys are good for hollywood gossip, not for running the last superpower on the planet.

I don't see where China fits into this argument.

The Republicans got booted out of Congress because of the taint of Bush (and the president among many things is the cheerleader for his political party). If Bush had been good at his job, he'd still have a Republican majority and get a lot more of what he wants done. Now? Well, he's just doing what he needs to get by. But it doesn't come across as anything other than doing so only because he has no other choice. That's not smart, that's survival.

And your only plausible interpretation for these events is that bush is a bad politician? That's a bit simplistic.

Based on the determining factor, which your brought up, that a good politician gets what he wants? Absolutely.

You're making the assumption that the only thing Bush wanted in his 8 years in office was a Republican congressional victory in 06. I very much doubt that's the case.

Think about all the things Bush has desired to do since 2000. Think about all the initiatives hes pushed, the proposals he's supported, the electoral victories he's gotten, and the bills he's got through.

On the whole, he's done a pretty thorough job of getting what he wants, and I wager he will continue to do so to some degree for the next few years.

Er...yes, and having a Republican majority led to...

Which would be a lot easier if he still had that Republican majority.

Led to him getting pretty much everything he wanted for 6 years? Yea.

Which would be a lot easier if he still had that Republican majority.

Sure it would. But the fact that the Dems control the Leg doesn't mean that he's not going to get anything he wants these last two years. Furthermore, even if he didn't, why do you assume this would outweigh his successes in achieving his aims over the past 6?

That's actually...my...argument. He didn't have to be a smart politician to get what he wanted since he didn't need to negotiate with anybody.

I never said he won't get none of what he wants. Only now, he's actually going to have to learn to be a good politician to get what he wants.
