So to let you all catch up, those who are interested. Bulgaria has had, for 2-3 months now, a new government of the socialist left. Bulgaria's majority in Parliament forms the government whose head of government is the prime minister. The head of state, the president, is elected separately by popular vote. the president in Bulgaria has less executive powers because he shares a lot of them with the PM, and by share I mean, the PM has them. Also, Bulgaria is a parliamentary republic so basically the Parliament has the most power in the state.
The president belongs to what can best be described the conservative party in Bulgaria and the government as well as the majority of parliament is formed by the socialists.
For 2-3 months now, after the people saw who the new cabinet members would be in the new government they went to the streets to protest. Why? because the most important positions in the executive cabinet were filled by socialist cronies, oligarchs and media moguls.
The protests have not been without casualties. Not at the hands of the government mind you, the protests were very peaceful and the people have been very civil about the whole affair. But rather due to a large number of suicides. Some people burned themselves in front of official buildings, some shot themselves and some jumped to their death.
So what now?
Well, earlier today their minister of culture came out and said that the people of Bulgaria should be ashamed of themselves because they are damaging national interests through their protests and that they should keep their mouths shut and let them do whatever they want because they know best. This is also because of his ambition, the bulgarian louvre, a mindless project that is said to cost a fortune that Bulgaria doesn't have, and have little reward. needless to say, this is a project is basically a cash cow from whose tit, all of the minister's friends will suckle.

The protesters are demanding the government resigns. The socialist PM, who has successfully managed to fool everyone in thinking he is a nice guy, and his cronies.
So now, what is there to do? For months the voices of the Bulgarian people have been ignored. the casualties of the protests, forgotten. And the people in power still act like they own the country. And yet, nobody cares. Nobody speaks on behalf of the people from the EU. Nobody pays attention.

(Reuters) - Hundreds of protesters rallied in front of Bulgaria's parliament on Wednesday, demanding the resignation of the Socialist-led government that they accuse of having murky links to influential business circles.
