Brown swings back at Trump: Climate change is propelling California’s fires, governor says

Gov. Jerry Brown on Sunday said wildfires like the ones spanning the state today threaten “our whole way of life” and lend urgency to efforts that would slow the impacts of man-made climate change.

“This is not the new normal,” he said, employing a phrase that state leaders have used to describe the past two deadly, prolonged California fire seasons. “This is the new abnormal, and this new abnormal will continue certainly in the next 10 to 15 years.”

He spoke a day after President Donald Trump wrote a message on Twitter that seemed to blame California government for the 2017 and 2018 wildfires that wiped out parts of Santa Rosa, Redding and now Paradise.

“There is no reason for these massive, deadly and costly forest fires in California except that forest management is so poor,” Trump wrote.

Trump, a climate change denier, always wants to find something else to blame. How can we feel secure with such a person in charge?

Trump has also threatened to cut off Federal aid to California's forest fire fight, blaming government mismanagement.

Actually they are primarily driven by the actions of Peter H. Burnett and his policy of allocating $1,000,000 towards the exitinction of the native Americans inside his borders. That and the Californians propensity to eliminate the Needash celebrators every year starting in 1853.

What the heck...?

The fact is that it doesn't rain or snow around the year to a fraction that it did over ten years ago. The situation has gotten so bad that even when we do get a winter of solid rain, we still lose. Two winters ago we got enough rain and snow pack to completely take us out of drought status. Huzzaw, right? Well, no. All that rain resulted in tons of new foliage, but then it didn't rain again for the rest of the year. All that new growth completely dried out, resulting in more dry tinder and therefore more fires than ever before.

Just an aside- we've been seeing this on the morning news everyday and have wondered why so many people are dying. Are they ignorng warnings? Communications problems? 31 dead so far and hundreds missing.

Bark beetles are killing trees in the Sierra Nevada at a record pace. Here's why

I was startled by the sheer number of dead trees on a recent trip to the Sierra Nevada.

A large percentage of these dead trees were caused by bark beetle infestation, and it seems to be accelerating. To explain why, here’s some background.

“Since 2010, an estimated 129 million trees have died in California’s national forests due to conditions caused by climate change, unprecedented drought, bark beetle infestation and high tree densities,” according to the U.S. Forest Service.

Dead trees = fuel for forest fires = more dead trees.

It seems both Climate change and poor government oversight are to blame.

I don't think you have a clear understanding of the kind of manpower and money it would take to keep the forests clear of tinder.

I would agree. But Trump's 'forest management' means devoting huge resources to logging out all those 129 million dead trees & surrounding dead undergrowth.

Bark beetles spread by the use of volatile chemical markers called pheromones. I would think that installing pheromone-laden beetle traps could pay rich rewards down the road.

Then a mix of logging and then rape should do wonders

I'm going to go ahead and assume that an autocorrect fail was the cause of your post.

I just caught a TV ad from one of the big insurance companies (don't want to give them free pub so won't name them). But I am sure you will recognize them and will likely see the ad.

So the talent is sitting in a chair in a field with a storm brewing overhead. The script reads "twenty-six 500 year storms in the last decade". [insert company name] is adjusting its rates to meet your needs".

For those of you who are too dense to figure out what this major insurance company has figured out....human impact on climate change is real and climate change is real. For those who have followed my posts regarding Insurance companies and actuarial tables, this will sound familiar. You never win fighting the Insurance company with its actuarial tables. They are as solid and well founded as House odds at the Casino. If they are adjusting their actuarial tables the numbingly ignorant best wise up and stop listening to Donald's nonsense about using aerosol hair spray in his bathroom with the door closed "So it can't possibly have an impact"!
