First France, and now Spain. Ever get the feeling that despite all the negatives about UK other member states do NOT want UK to leave? :roll:

France is already facing calls from its own voters to have their own referendum on EU membership, and they are not alone. There are even such calls from German voters for same thing, and I started threads here on those very points.

Eurosceptism is growing throughout Europe, and the fear is that should UK leave other member states will follow. A very real and distinct possibility.

The above was reader comment extracted from link supplied above on issue. I agree with it, and with other comments like "Spain keeps its territories in Northern Africa".

So there we have it. Fear: the UK will be invaded by Martians should it exit the bloc, or Threats: all the EU refugee/migrants will be allowed to enter UK should it exit the bloc. In both instances those rattling their sabres do not speak for population or even other politicians in those member states, as happened in France where other politicians publically stated no such thing could or would be allowed to happen should UK vote to terminate its EU membership.

The main parties in France and Germany calling for such votes are the Front Nationale and AfD - when more mainstream parties start to call for such then it might have been more worth discussing.

Here, those referendum calls came from more mainstream sources, most notably the very split Conservative Party which is in open civil war right now and UKIP. I know some of UKIPs supporters are the less savoury kind of nationalist but that's not to tarnish the whole bunch with a very broad brush.

Yep, I remember. I also remember PM Cameron saying time and again the UK would not have an EU in/out referendum, but UKIP and Farage certainly compelled him to change his position on that point. And, as you say, the Conservative party is now split on that point. A far cry from when they only represented a minority. Then there is Labour who are also split, but largely on leadership of Corbyn, though a visit to Labours own LabourList.com site will show even they acknowledged losing a lot of voters to UKIP.

What about something more recent, Belgium? There are other member states seeing growing rise in Eurosceptism, as I assume you are aware. If not, try surfing the net. You may learn something [no sarcasm intended).

Word of advice, when you surf; try and find both positions on a subject and then look a bit deeper for background information. Might help you be a bit more questioning of all sources; not just the ones you don't like the sound of.:2wave:

I agree, and always do. I would also advise seeing what is being said in those other countries. Their newspapers are also online, and every political party in Europe also possess their own websites, though everything published there would be slanted to favour their own party, as I am sure you are aware. However, it does provide an insight into what they are doing and/or think.

The political elite has done things over the years that cynically harmed large portions of the populations and lied to the electorate over decades. They appear disfunctional, irresponsible and dishonest, when confronted with the consequences of problems of their own making for the gain of the bureaucratic elite but of great concern to the electorates. The political elite has lost legitimacy as have the organizations they represent.

What the Daily Express as usual does not understand is .. basically everything, much like their readers it seems.

First off, Gibraltar is at the moment within the EU. That means the border between Spain and Gibraltar is an internal border which means the free flow of people as per the EU rules.

Secondly, if the UK leaves the EU, then this border becomes an EXTERNAL border, and the normal rules between countries apply. That means border controls.

Now the problem is here, that Gibraltar is a haven for drug, gun and cigarette smugglers, so Spain is fully within its right to close the border and enforce a blockade if the police at Gibraltar does not cooperate to stop this illegal activity. Considering that they dont do that at the moment, then well...

I get my cheap Tabaco from France, and then there is always the black market in Italy. They even had one just outside of Bari, right outside the police station. I kid you not.

Unfortunately there isn't much. There's a ton of hyperbole and little actual real guide to help. One thing I'm noticing though and that is on the BBC Have Your Say forums - there are a lot more people like me now asking for more facts from all sides and less hyperbole.

The situation was previously that if you didn't say "vote Leave" in any discussion you were hugely downvoted and Kippers were posting leave the EU comments in all the discussions - even the sporting ones. The discussion is becoming more even handed but the lack of facts from both Leave and Remain camps is a horrible comment on our democracy.

Of course the other governments do not want the UK to leave. There are relatively strong movements in many members that want to reduce the EU mandate or leave the EU altogether. As the parties in power are mostly the ones that continuously drove the EU further and transferred the sovereignties to the EU, their first, second and third line personnel is committed, tainted and has a everything to loose. So the governments can be expected to fight Brexit tooth and nail independent of their populations' wellbeings.

I thought crime in Gibraltar was lower than in Spain. As to the boarder coltrols, that is within governmental discretion and is a small issue, unless you want to give a peaceful county a hard time.

Easy to have lower crime if the police and officials are part of the problem. All smugglers have to do now days, is take their fast boats into Gibraltar waters and the police there defends them against the chasing Spanish coastguard and police.

I was born in England, but not my parents. My father was born in Belluno Italy ( this may interest some: Landslide kills thousands in Italy - Oct 09, 1963 - HISTORY.com ), and my mother in town called Trigano Italy just outside of Bari (this may interest some: 2nd December 1943: Mustard Gas disaster in Bari harbour ). My father was drafted into the army where he fought the British in North Africa. He was wounded and became a POW until the end of war after which he became a British subject. He later met my mother, and she also became a British subject before I was born. Needless to say, I have a lot of relatives in Italy, some are even in the Calabrian mafia (on my mothers side). I should add that I also have a lot of relatives in UK, Australia and other countries round the world, including USA. Now, I mentioned something that led to my being approached by a certain agency to help them. As it turned out, it was not the first time I was approached by a certain agency as result of my position at time, including while residing in Australia, though this time was because of my knowledge of electronics, chemistry, and computer technology. That is, some were uploading details on how to construct explosive devices onto BBS (Bulletin Board Systems), which were pre internet as people know it today, and were a source of information not to mention birth of emails.

Now, what were you saying about Gibraltar?

Apparently some OPs appear on the merit of a linked article that hasn't even been read.

The assumption that certain circles in Spain are using such a particular (hypothetical) issue as a measure of forcing Britain to stay (as implied by the OP and resulting from the extreme ignorance lodged there as well) shows the absolute lack of comprehension of what here is futilely presented as substantiation (NOT).

Those spouting this in Spain are gleefully hoping that BRITAIN WILL LEAVE, so that they can finally get the long knives out without any further interference from Bruxelles.

Even the article states that, had somebody bothered to read it properly.

In this particular case there is, namely the interpretation of this presenting a Spanish attempt to force the UK to stay being totally ludicrous and smacking of the silliness that some fall prey to.

There always have been factions of considerable size in Spain that want that rock back, the whole Bremain/Brexit thing be damned.

If the simple act of surfing the net were to serve as substitute for pertinent analysis and thus provision of salient information, we wouldn't have to put up with stuff like this.
