Breaking: General Stanley McChrystal tenders his resignation – Telegraph Blogs

Quote(A senior Capitol Hill source tells me that General Stanley McChrystal had tendered his resignation to President Barack Obama and that the White House is actively discussing a replacement who could be quickly confirmed by the Senate.)

Now that is the honourable thing to do in such a situation.

Of course we could always ask the question (What was he thinking in giving Rolling Stone the interview?)

Interesting comments made at bottom of page.

If obama's smart, {which he ain't] he won't accept his resignation.

This is bull****. McChrystal has not resigned, been fired or been replaced.

Nothing will probably happen until Wednesday, after Obama leaves his boot prints all over that arrogant ass's fatigues.

that would be a very stupid thing to do. Obama is in a no-win situation here; either he keeps Gen McCrystal and looks weak (and encourages more infighting among senior members of his administration) or he fires him tactfully (the least worse scenario), in which case he loses a valuable strategic thinker in a tough war. If he fires him maliciously, then he's just taken someone who can lay decent credit to helping win Iraq, and made a permanent enemy of him. A McCrystal campaiging for the Republican Candidate in 2012 would make a powerful critic of Obama's Afghanistan / WOT policy if that effort is not percieved as being successful.

The Military hasn't used "fatigues" in years. Furthermore, One can not blame McChrystal for resigning, Obama has been an abject failure in managing this war, who would want the job?

Obama, meet kettle. I hope The People put their boot prints all over Obama's ass in 2012 for his arrogance. BTW, McChrystal must resign to maintain honor.

He shouldn't resign. He has every right to be pissed at Obama. Obama said he would bring the troops home, and now he's sent more into Afganistan. Why shouldn't free speech apply to military officials?

because they are in the military. nobody in the military has "free speech", and we are all constrained on what we can say and do. It would be illegal for me, for example, to go out to a Tea Party rally in uniform. the Military is Apolitical, and that is something that we feel is extremely important.

What surprises me about this affair is the speed with which Obama made his decision.

Which leads me to suppose that being insulted is something he gets real uptight on.

However he did IMO make the right decision, McChrystal had to go.

It was my understanding that he was called to resign after comments he made openly criticizing the President's attention to resources in the war. If that's true, you bring that to your CinC, not to the media. Maybe he forgot that even though he is in charge of Afghanistan, he still has a superior. When he spoke out, it was insubordinate and cast negative press on the operation in Afghanistan.

You always hear about people saying we shouldn't demoralize the troops by spitting on their efforts. Well, how does it look to the rest of the world when a top general is feeding stories to the media about an inept President? It doesn't really speak to unit cohesion.

I don't care if it's Obama or Bush in charge, it was just unprofessional and out of line. He deserved to be fired and replaced with someone more loyal.
