BREAKING : Condemning Bucha cruelty, EU offers speedy start for Ukraine membership

KYIV, April 8 (Reuters) - European Commission chief Ursula von der Leyen said the civilian deaths in the Ukrainian town of Bucha showed the "cruel face" of Russia's army and pledged to try to speed Ukraine's bid to become a member of the European Union.

During a visit to Bucha, where forensic investigators started to exhume bodies from a mass grave, von der Leyen looked visibly moved by what she saw in the town northwest of Kyiv where Ukrainian officials say hundreds of civilians were killed by Russian forces. read more

Any consideration is a symbolic gesture, as it was with Turkey years ago.

not this time. + Turkey has never been part of Europe

A symbolic gesture made by one person. It will not happen in our generation or the next.

Good. An 'Eu Marshall Plan' of sorts.

Once all the fighting comes to an end, my hope and view would be that this would give Ukraine access to the needed resources to rebuilt quickly (yeah, still will be years).

Disappointingly so, the feckless US executive branch can't take a similar strong stance.

I am under no illusion that doing so is in the EU's best interests, Ukraine serving as a 'buffer state' between the EU (peaceful) and Russia (aggressive).

Might this repeat in a few years time? I guess we'll see.

one person
do you think it was European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen very own 🤣 initiative ?

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen in Kyiv on Friday presented Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy with paperwork for his country to join the European Union.

They should fast track Ukraine to be in NATO.

They should fast track Ukraine to be in NATO.
That question has been batted back and forth here in these forums, as well as in NATO, EU nations and, I'm pretty sure, the US federal foreign policy bureaucracy as well.

There's plus, minuses and risks associated with moving in that direction, one of which is this was Russian's fundamental objections.

Yes, risks. With how big and sharp a stick do you want to poke a nuclear armed Russian bear? Should it escalate into a nuclear conflict, are you willing to accept those consequences that come with that risk?

I'm very much in support of Ukraine, wishing that the Ukraine defeat the Russian invasion, that NATO, EU and US need to provide any and all support as quickly as possible, and also need to stop short of any life fire confrontation with the Russians. The risk of, and consequences from, a life fire confrontation with the Russians are simply to great for NATO, the EU and the US, in fact the world.

Then what’s the point of NATO? All your arguments apply to, let’s say, Poland, a NATO member. If Russia invaded Poland do you want to poke Russian bear that has nuclear weapons?

Risk is part of life. Wasn't that what you guys were just saying about covid?

**** 'em. Poke them as hard as we can. If they launch, they all die too.

The difference is between being a NATO member nation and not being a NATO member nation.

Poland is a NATO member nation, and Russia wouldn't force that escalation.

Ukraine is not a NATO member nation, so the engagement NATO can undertake need be limited to less than life fire confrontation with the Russians, which would be an immediate escalation, and would probably force Russia into a first tactical strike nuclear response. This would be were everyone in the world would lose for a number of decades.

This appears to be an unfortunate reality. From my view it IS more like the Cuban missile crisis than not. All do need to tread carefully here, lest we render the Earth a radioactive ball, and that'd really go cross to the climate change political activists.

What's the point of NATO? Has Russia invaded any of the NATO countries? Nope? Is NATO then serving it's 'point'?

many in Moscow demand attack on Poland , man we are at war with Moscow everything is possible but do Moscow has resources for this ? will the Generals follow the orders ?

Russia is not attacking Poland. We are not at war with Russia.

Absolutely not! Do you want to send troops to fight Russia? Russia will most certainly be threatened by such a provocation.
The U.S. military would kick their asses.
The very idea of U.S. forces intervening would have Putin slinking back with his tail between his legs.
It's about time the world stood up to Putin -- who uses threats to get what he wants. Eventually, we will have to do it. Now is the best time.

What if Russia DID invade Poland? All the arguments, e.g. that this would threaten world war III, so we should back down, is the same for Poland as it is for Ukraine.
