Bradley Manning is now Chelsea Manning [W:148]

Is this some effort to be sent to a women's prison?
 
There should be normal health care access when in prison, but this takes the cake. He can wait 35 years and get it done when he's out.
 
Having a friend that had to go through this, I know it's hard for Manning to deal with being a man when he/she wants to be a woman.
However, he could have gotten this surgery had he not BROKEN THE FRIKKIN LAW as well. Sorry, but when you break the law, you get a lot of your freedoms taken away.

Your post is misleading, unless I'm reading it wrong. There is nothing in the article to indicate he'll receive hormone therapy. In fact, the article points out that Ft Leavenworth does NOT provide hormone therapy -- but does provide psychiatric counseling for gender identity issues.

I would pity the fool who let it be known in prison that he wanted to transition to a woman. I think he'd have a lot of unexpected help.
 
Why not let him/her out of your sick police state with its sexist bullies? S/He belongs here in our Country. Why do you put pleasing reactionary sadists above decency? Have you no humanity or honour?
 
According to the OP article Manning entered the military in order to "straight"-en himself out, having self-identified as "Breanna" and dressed in women's clothing and makeup prior to enlisting.

I think this kid has a basket of neuroses that he mistakenly thought the rigor and discipline of military life would take away. He's obviously been deeply troubled for a long time, and got so wrapped up in his pain that he thought a document dump of classified info would be the right thing to do.

I don't think he should get either hormone therapy or sex reassignment on the taxpayer dime. Neither has anything to do with his health as a prisoner, he has no social life in prison to speak of that would require him living as the sex he thinks he truly is.

Oh, I'm sure that there will be plenty of inmates willing to help young "Chelsea" fulfill his/her dream of becoming a woman. I just wonder if they are going to let him take his blonde wig to prison with him, the boys in cell block H are just going to love that......

I look forward to hearing about your efforts to get the UK government to petition the US government to allow them to pay for Manning's sex reassignment surgery. It would be the humane and honorable thing to do.

I'll gladdly chip in for his plane ticket in 12 or so years when he's let out on parole (I know nothing of how he'd go about getting a Passport and violating the conditions of his parole by leaving the country, but if he figures out a way I'll help foot the bill).

Until then, he's a convicted criminal and the charges he was convicted of are all perfectly reasonable (I would have storngly opposed a treason conviction).

He can serve his time, like every other convicted criminal, and then go about his life however he sees fit.

The US just spared the life of a traitor who, despite his guilty verdict, feels comfortable enough to ask for hormone therapy. Besides that he has advocates who publicly and vocally support him without any fear of government retribution.
This is probably not the optimal time to make your case that the US is a bully, sexist, sadistic police state lacking humanity and honour. Just sayin'.....
