Our thirst for oil makes oil spills unavoidable and thats why its necessary that all oil importing countries reduce their oil consumption and find alternative engergies. Now America being the 2nd largest oil producter has other possiblities compared to oil arm countries like Germany.

The first point is energy conservation. Use less resources in a intelligent manner. Remember, Carter and his 55mph speed limit? It cost the taxpayers nothing, but saved a lot of oil per day.
Better insolation of homes, solar plates on your homes and business cuts the need for atomic energy. There is lots to do and many ideas doesnt cost any money, but demands we change our life style.

Example, many people water their lawn during the middle of the day when the sun shines the most. A waste of water. Better is either in the early morning or evening, and with a timer you dont even have to leave your TV couch. When your cleaning your teeth, turn off the water untill you actually need the water. Understand my point?

Because America wast the most energy, you are the country that can make the most improvement in energy conservation and save money at the same time. If we all thought like our grandparents during the 30s and 40s it wouldnt be difficult to save without giving up our high living standard.

For example TVs and washing machines are more effiecient than they were 5 years ago. Just buy the right appliance and you do alot for yourself and the environment.

Do americans in a large way see a need to change their ways, or are they waiting for laws forcing them to consume energy more intelligently eg cars with better gas milage?

What would be best is for America to drill our own oil and reduce dependance on foreign oil while we search for alternatives. I'm all for energy conservation, and most Americans are pro energy efficient. However, most aren't for crippling the economy by not drilling or forcing people to conserve.

I guess the oil leck has convinced any ameircans to change their wasteful ways. What are you going to do when 1 billion chinese and 1 billion indians demand their share of oil and they have money too?

The oil leak has shown us the importance of safe oil drilling, and somewhat showed the open minded that environmentalist regulation (like pushing rigs far offshore) was a bad thing. Plus it's great to see many of the partisan left to fall out of love with Obama due to his failure at leading the recovery and containment of the oil spill. True, America could be more energy efficient, but right now we need to deal with the economy and becoming energy independent even if that means drilling our own oil and using it to fuel us instead of oil from other nations.

*blink*

You seem to be quite oblivious to the recent changes that have happened here while trying to come across as someone who knows a thing or two about my country. Hybrid cars? More wind turbines? Do they ring a bell?
The first point is energy conservation. Use less resources in a intelligent manner. Remember, Carter and his 55mph speed limit? It cost the taxpayers nothing, but saved a lot of oil per day.
Yeah. Everyone hated it, it failed miserably to accomplish any form of conservation and the technology to accomplish any form of a clean break from oil-based fuels was nowhere near in sight.
Better insolation of homes, solar plates on your homes and business cuts the need for atomic energy. There is lots to do and many ideas doesnt cost any money, but demands we change our life style.
*facepalm*

Actually, they do cost money. Better insulation costs more money. Furthermore, in light of recent energy spikes, the market is all about improving conservation (and retrofitting existing homes to be just as good.) You'd know this if you looked at this country closer...
Example, many people water their lawn during the middle of the day when the sun shines the most. A waste of water. No, we're oblivious to basic cost-cutting measures and until you said this no one had the slightest clue on how to accomplish this.

In terms of what? Saudi Arabia has the largest oil reserves, Russia has the largest gas reserves.
For example TVs and washing machines are more effiecient than they were 5 years ago. Just buy the right appliance and you do alot for yourself and the environment.
We're a consumer society, we buy new stuff all the time and yes, that includes new appliances.
Do americans in a large way see a need to change their ways, or are they waiting for laws forcing them to consume energy more intelligently eg cars with better gas milage?
Umm... you do realize that in Western Europe that the people "changed their ways" not because they grew a new conciseness and decided to be more economical, but because of higher gas taxes and the like implemented by their respective governments? Higher gas prices beget more fuel efficient cars. Furthermore, it's difficult to implement the same rail and public transportation networks since we have fewer people spread out over such a large area.

Kind of thought that was what we were doing by drilling in the Gulf.

The oil is going to run out anyways and before it runs out demand will be so high that you wont be able to afford it. Why not start now and conserve. Americas waste twice as much oil as europeans and europeans x more oil as 3rd world countries. So use less and use what you have smartly. Why cant americans look 25 years into the future and start planning for the world of tormmorow? Disney built his world of tomorrow in Florida decades ago. Where is your vision.
