One of the brothers suspected of carrying out the Boston bombings was in possession of right-wing American literature in the run-up to the attack, BBC Panorama has learnt.

Tamerlan Tsarnaev subscribed to publications espousing white supremacy and government conspiracy theories.
He also had reading material on mass killings.

Until now the Tsarnaev brothers were widely perceived as just self-styled radical jihadists.

The programme discovered that Tamerlan Tsarnaev possessed articles which argued that both 9/11 and the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing were government conspiracies.

Another in his possession was about "the rape of our gun rights".

Reading material he had about white supremacy commented that "Hitler had a point".
Tamerlan Tsarnaev also had literature which explored what motivated mass killings and noted how the perpetrators murdered and maimed calmly.

There was also material about US drones killing civilians, and about the plight of those still imprisoned in Guantanamo Bay.

US conspiracies, gun rights; Sounds like this Boston bomber had more in common with the tea party than radical Islam.

Right, because you know how many TEA party terrorist and bombings have occurred. The contortions some are able through to avoid any reality they find uncomfortable would make Stretch Armstrong jealous.

Seems the writer may be ignorant of the popularity of conspiracy theories in the ME and larger Islamic world?

Nearly a decade after September 11, 2001, skepticism about the events of that day persists among Muslim publics. When asked whether they think groups of Arabs carried out the 9/11 attacks on the U.S., most Muslims in the nations surveyed say they do not believe this.

There is no Muslim public in which even 30% accept that Arabs conducted the attacks. Indeed, Muslims in Jordan, Egypt, and Turkey are less likely to accept this today than in 2006.

Is pro-2nd amendment literature also popular in the middle-east? Do the people of Jordan debate whether America should ban assault weapons?

Yes, Egypt, Jordan and Turkey: they hate and despise us, but when their chips are down, coffers running low and in need of military assistance, we're their best friends. What a bipolar world.

Well, from how the article is written he seemed to have conspiracy theorist literature, which in the states is tied up with groups like the militias and christian identity movement. So the fact that such material would also be included in it would be of little surprise.

It's like if I am in egypt and delve into local conspiracy literature I would also be exposed to material about Israeli spy-vultures and the coptic plots to overthrow the state. That doesn't mean i am actively researching it or that it forms the core elements of my world view

it's also odd that you would use this article to make the above argument, considering it states:

"The brothers' friends told us Tamerlan turned against the country and became passionate about Islam after becoming frustrated when his boxing career faltered because he did not have American citizenship."

""He (Tamerlan) just didn't like America. He felt like America was just basically attacking all Middle Eastern countries…you know trying to take their oil.""

"The brothers had been reading militant Islamic websites before the bombings."

Maybe he was a gun right supporter. He may have liked chocolate ice cream too. Absolutely nothing collaborates that either of these traits had absolutely anything to do with the act, though.

Antisemitism (IE. 9/11 was a inside job and Hitler had a point) are trademarks of radical jihadists along with white supremacists. Hell, I remember Ahmadinejad giving that speech a few years back about looking into the jews and 9/11. Of course he may have been a white supremacist in addition to a radical jihadist. They're not exactly distinct from each other.

I realize the OP is obviously trying to make a ridiculous point by comparing mainstream right wing thought with white supremacy, but it seems reckless of the BBC to do similar. None of the literature the article mentions are given any serious consideration by a vast majority of the right-wing.

Blood for oil guy eh? It appears he has more in common with the American left than radical Islam.

You tell us. You could ask them but, they lie to infidels.

Radical Islam is considered to be Far Right Wing in nature.

And Ariel Castro is a registered democrat. What's your point? Is it that the political leanings of a criminal mean something?

What I've noticed is that people who blow up innocent others at random are nuts. The Boston bombers may have also had little pink bunny slippers. I suppose if they had a copy of the NYT laying around their apartment somewhere that would prove something, too. Maybe they liked the pictures.

It was the joos

It's always the joos

Clearly this brown skinned individual was secretly a member of the white supremecist movement, aka The TEA PARTY! It all makes sense now!!!!!!

****ing hell, really people? Really?

-edit- (And I'm an idiot with apparently bad memory this morning, woo)

Chechen Muslims living on welfare and housing vouchers from Massachusetts are a natural part of the base.

He wasn't brown skinned...

He was literally from Caucasia.

I wouldn't say that this discredits his infatuation with radical Islam. It just complements it. It sounds like he was just an extreme person who was into extreme and even contradictory ideologies. That isn't surprising for someone who - from reports I've read - may have been developing a mental illness. Even further, from what I've read the right-wing literature he had included conspiracy theories that he apparently believed. It's possible that he just wanted to read more on that and didn't care about the other stuff.

In any case, I wouldn't jump to conclusions about him being a right winger or anything. Had he been found with OWS documents, all the dumb hack conservatives would have concluded that he was a liberal and that would've have been just as a stupid.

Yep, that one's my bad from faulty memory. The older brother's the one that popped in my head, and for whatever reason the somewhat paler skinned white guy + dark facial hair stuble always appears to be a darker skin tone to me. After that post I actually stopped and thought back to the Rolling Stone picture people went stupidly ape **** over and remembered my memory was a bit off. Was actually coming back in here from after lunch to correct that statement :D

It was only a matter of time before someone tried to play this card.

Extremist is generally the way to term these people. I always like when 9/11 truther stuff gets thrown out there as an example in these cases as people scream "SEE, THIS PROVES HE'S FROM THE SIDE THAT I'M NOT ON"...of course ignoring that there was a contingent of your extreme left and your extreme libertarian right that both got in on that movement. A lot of times political issues or ideologies are more of a circle then a straight line, with the extreme ends of both finding more common ground with each other than either finds with the middle.

There is NO such thing as actual news anymore, anywhere.

There are just editorialized opinions designed to tickle the ears of certain groups.

I am ashamed because of what we have lost.

Why does it not surprise me that the Boston Bomber was a gun nut?
