Trump’s plan to stem border crossings gets results

"President Donald Trump’s plan to force Mexico to stem the flow of migrants across the southwest border of the U.S. appears to be working.
Border arrests, a metric for illegal crossings, plummeted to 51,000 in August, according to preliminary government figures obtained by POLITICO Wednesday, down more than 60 percent since a peak in May. And border watchers say it’s largely because of an agreement Trump struck with Mexico in June. Mexican authorities, backed by the newly formed National Guard, are now cracking down on migrants traversing Mexico’s southern border with Guatemala, monitoring river crossings and stopping buses carrying migrants from Central America through Mexico. At the same time, the U.S. is making tens of thousands of asylum seekers wait in Mexico while their applications are considered.

The decline in border traffic — if sustained — could amount to a major victory for Trump as he heads into the 2020 election. Perhaps more important, the experimental measures taken by his administration could reshape immigration enforcement for years to come.
“I think that they are getting exactly what they said they would get, by forcing the hand of Mexico,” said Oscar Chacón, executive director of Chicago-based pro-migrant group Alianza Americas. “But the question is, ‘Is it sustainable?’”
The White House and the Homeland Security Department did not respond to requests for comment. But Mexican Ambassador to the U.S. Martha Bárcena told POLITICO that steps taken since June have produced meaningful results.
“People know that if they come into Mexico, they have to respect the Mexican law,” Bárcena said. She added that migrants planning to seek asylum in the U.S. now understand that it’s “not as easy as they were told it was going to be.”
Trump praised Mexico’s actions to reduce the migrant flow in a tweet Saturday that quoted Brandon Judd, president of the National Border Patrol Council, saying Mexico was “stepping up to the plate and doing what they need to do.”"

In addition, Honduras asylum deal signed this week.

Another reason for the current distractions.

So he's costing America more money and slowing our economic growth and that's supposed to be a win somehow?

And this will cause those number to go down even more...

Homeland Security will finally end “catch-and-release” of Central American immigrant families caught crossing the border illegally, acting Secretary Kevin K. McAleenan announced Monday, saying the department has finally gotten a handle on the migrant surge that had sowed chaos at the border over the last year.

Mr. McAleenan said families that attempt to claim asylum will usually be sent to wait in Mexico while their cases proceed in U.S. immigration courts. Those who don’t attempt to claim asylum will be quickly returned to their home countries.

So no need for a wall?

So no need for a wall?

Still need the wall. We don't catch everyone. And drug smugglers and human traffickers don't claim asylum.

Most of that does not come through places where the wall will be built. Most drugs come through checkpoints. Much easier to haul all of this on paved roads.

Update.

U.S. border arrests down as Mexico's enforcement rises

"A Customs and Border Protection official said Monday that 64,000 people were arrested in August, less than half of a peak in May, as Mexico's enforcement rises.

Acting Customs and Border Protection Commissioner Mark Morgan said at a press conference Monday that August arrests were down 56 percent from the peak in May when there were over 144,000 arrests.

Arrests at the southern border in August were also down from just over 82,000 the previous month, which represents a 22 percent decline, he said.

Morgan credited President Donald Trump's efforts to "curb the flow of illegal migration" as a reason for the decline, along with cooperation from Mexico to step up enforcement, but said Congress still needs to do more to pass legislation to address a border crisis where children are "being used as passports."

"The president has made it very clear that he is going to use every tool available to him and this administration to address this unprecedented crisis at the southern border," Morgan said. "We have seen historic agreements and policy put in place by this administration, unprecedented network of initiatives from regulatory reforms, policy changes, interior enforcement efforts, the list goes on and on."

Morgan said enforcement in Mexico has risen sharply to 134,000 people apprehended so far this calendar year, compared with 83,000 apprehensions all of last year.

"That's a substantial increase of apprehensions that the government of Mexico has executed," Morgan said. "In addition, since June, Mexico has deployed thousands of troops, they've created a new National Guard within their country, 10,000 troops to the southern border, 15,000 troops to the northern border with the United States, again unprecedented support and cooperation with the government of Mexico." Besides, we need a boost in the ladder and shovel industry.

Or they invest in ladders and/or shovels.

Update:

Border Arrests Down for Sixth Straight Month

"Some 33,500 migrants were taken into custody by immigration officials last month, a 2,000-person decrease from October and the latest in a downward trend that has continued since apprehensions peaked in May at the highest levels seen in over a decade.

In addition to those apprehended at the border, about 9,100 migrants were deemed inadmissible last month after presenting themselves lawfully at ports of entry, bringing the total number of migrants facing enforcement action to 42,649 last month."

watch out for this "a new way forward" legislation though. if you haven't heard of it read up.
