I am a big fan of science fiction, and was very happy to see Dune, my favorite book, done justice by Denis Villeneuve.
But there is so much more great stuff out there. Do you have books you'd like to see made into a movie?

Here's the top one on my list; Deepsix, by Jack McDevitt.
Great characters, a well thought out story, non-stop action. Great fun and would make an incredible film.

My pitch to any lurking film studio execs;

Science fiction in film is wildly popular, but has been undermined by comic books and fantasy stories. Real, hard science fiction is lacking in film - and should not be. SF film today is in a rut. Far too many unoriginal ideas, sequels, remakes, etc. Far too many comic books. Now I thoroughly enjoy the Marvel movies, but I don’t think of them as really great stories. They are ‘just’ great fun, but remain comic books brought to life by movie magic.

Dune, on the other hand, is a great story.

One of my favorite sf stories on screen today is the TV series “The Expanse”. I read the books after I started watching it, and have rewatched it several times since. It serves as an excellent example of hard science fiction done well. But films are a step up on the grand scale. We need something better, more original, more rational, and more ‘hard’ sf. We need Deepsix.

A few years ago, someone randomly asked me what sf book I’d like to see made into a movie. Dune, my first choice, has been done - brilliantly - by Denis Villeneuve. It will stand the test of time as a truly epic film. I had read Deepsix years before, and without consciously thinking about it, it had replaced Dune at the top of that list in my head. By far. It is THE story I want to see on the big screen.
Why? There are so many reasons why it would be a great film, and if you’ve read it you already know what they are. (If you haven’t, go read it!) It has great characters, a well developed backstory, and more than one serious and dramatic twist. It has non-stop action, an exciting premise, and an urgent storyline.

I do appreciate the business aspect of movie making. The reason comic book movies get made is that we know there is a ready market for them. It’s a risk to do something new. That risk is also where great things are made. If Deepsix gets made successfully, the author has extensive IP with the same characters, set in the same universe. There are 8 books in the series, and each is just as compelling as Deepsix.

It is worth the risk. Hell, I even have a cast list...

I'd like to see Asimov's Foundation series. The Caves of Steel and The Naked Sun would also be great.

Problem is I stopped reading fiction so long ago I really can't think of any.

I really didn't care for the Dragons of Pern books, but I did like the ship that sang. I like the first part of the Dune movie, but unlike many I got bored with the second part. And the series Witcher might have been good books but I thought it got too formulistic "woke" and quickly lost its initial charm.

The one SF book I never forgot was "Bill the Galactic Hero"...I wonder if it has ever been considered for film. Very satirical.
