So apparently we are experiencing a "Bomb Cyclone"

I am not sure which is dumber by the idiots at the weather channel.

Made up words like "Bomb Cyclone"

or naming winter storms.

Idiots. That is all

The term "Bombogenesis" is being tossed around like rice at a wedding, and it's a word no one has heard or spoken outside a meteorology classroom until yesterday. It's just another Snowmageddon, storm-of-the-century-of-the-month, we're mostly used to it out here. Even TheWeatherChannel has to sell adds though, I guess they're just trying to make weather exciting.

With the temperatures we've been having, I'm surprised "Polar Vortex" hasn't become a buzz phrase again.

Stupid name, but the view from my window suggests it is nonetheless accurate.

Whatever it's called, it's c-c-c-cold here...24...real feel like 6 with 24 MPH winds...brrrrrr...

Idiots using correct terminology. Don't they know us New Englanders refer to it as a Coldy McFrosty.

I see you're in the south. My husband said it has snowed in Florida and other states that aren't used to snow.

"The vorpal storm went snicker-snack"

With apologies to Lewis Carroll who had this climate nonsense completely figured out

I have a better name.
C.S.I.W.
Cold Snow Ice Wind.

It's usually just called a nor' ester.

Supposed to get 12-18 inches here by tomorrow morning, so I just call it a pain in the ass.

Back when I lived in upstate NY we had bomb cyclones from time to time. We called them "snow storms" or, in extreme circumstances, "really bad snow storms". Granted, they weren't as much fun as a bomb cyclone sounds but they got the job done.

Not to mention they actually give some hint as to what the hell you're talking about.

"Bomb cyclone" is just meaningless crap.

PV is next

Thank God for Global Warming, or it would really be cold!

No sir it is not usually called a nor' easter. Bombogenesis refers to the rate and depth of falling barometric pressure in an extratropical cyclone...It has nothing to do with the type of precipitation or the wind direction at a given location...

This tread represents another mocking of science which is killing our nation's leadership capacity in the sciences..

I never claimed the term I used was the correct scientific name.

You really have to make a huge extrapolation and some very broad assumptions about me, to assume I'm anti-science just because I used a casual term for a bad winter storm.

Now bend over Sir, and slowly pull that thing out of your backside.

No assumption concerning you was made...Just correcting an inaccurate claim you presented....not every northeaster is a bomb cyclone, and not every bombing cyclone is a nor' easter.

So when you said "It's usually just called a nor' ester.", that's not the case. That storm was of a specific class. So in New England it was sort of a northeaster (not really because the wind was more out of the north than northeast) but who's to quibble. It also was a bombing cyclone...because of the rate at which it intensified which is measured in terms of falling atmospheric pressure...

Sorry if I offended you somehow. I didn't say you were anti-science, I said the thread represented another case of it.
