Recently ten suicides happened one after another in Foxconn's factories in China. Foxconn is a Taiwanese enterprise who undertakes to manufacture IT products for Apple Inc., Dell Inc., etc..

In Foxconn, the workers worked for 12+ hours each day for a month payt of less than 2000 yuan (about 294 dollars) with no time to make fun. Even so, they had to bear mistreatment from the management, such as beating, scolds, illgeal search and illegal imprisonment.

Last year a young man called Sun Danyong suicided by jumping off the dormitorybuilding. He had received illegal searching and illegal imprisonment just for losing a set of phone!!!

In less than three months ten deaths happened to Foxconn!! What a bloody system drove them to death??

It is believed that there are other death events have not been revealed to the public. Among them, one girl died suddenly in her bed in the facotory's dormitory.

A piece of video material have revealed which showed that the securities in the foctory beating two workers crowdly.

Foxconn is a evil factory. The deaths need your concern.

Ps: I am not sure whether it is proper for me to post news like this here. If so, pls inform me, Moderator.

Chinese workers need your concern.

Chinese workers need a new government that doesn't allow companies to do this sort of thing.

In the USA, the other workers would have beat the security guards to a pulp if they tried that crap.

"The morale at the factory was very low when I was training there. Young engineers referred to the company as Foxconn University - a place to get a couple of year's experience after graduating, and before moving on to a more relaxed job.

There's a recreation centre, but the engineers I was training told me they had never been there. Then I saw on TV that there's a stress room full of these dolls that look like Japanese warriors. You get a bat and you beat them. That's how they are encouraged to relieve the stress.

The security at Foxconn has always been extremely tight. On arriving at the main gate, visitors had to surrender their passports to the guards and bags were searched."

BBC News - Foxconn suicides: 'Workers feel quite lonely'

Here is what appears to be a little more objective coverage on the story by the BBC. Certainly does sound like the company has problems that need dealt with. Good article with a number of angles. Worth a read.

Am a little cynical about the management beating and iimprisoning the workers. (or could be wrong, maybe they do)

Overall the story is still pretty fresh. Be interesting to follow as more details come out and rumors get contested or confirmed....

2000 yuan is hell of a good income per month considering the salaries posted in the website below. Also their cost of living expenses is different from, lets say US, which in california, 40,000 annual salary in USD is considered poverty.

Please post source. And no, sourcing from yourself in another forum does not count.

Source please...

If you want to bash Taiwanese companies, please be my guest. But have some good sources while your at it. And also while you are at it, why has none of the other Foxconn manufacturing plants also have cases of suicides as well? Those that suicided consists of teenagers. Proof is here:

Ninth Foxconn Worker of 2010 Commits Suicide

quoted:
The company expressed its regret and sorrow for the victims, all aged between 18 and 24.

So I think those that suicided are just not used to the real world working very long hours and just got depressed and suicided. And the fact that the working environment is as bland as it can be, depression can set in.

And while we are at the point of bashing,

The CPSC said it would investigate the highlighted items, among them charms that contained between 84% and 91% cadmium. Wal-Mart Stores and Claire's, an international accessories and jewelry chain with nearly 3,000 stores in North America and Europe, have since pulled items cited in the report from shelves.

In a recorded speech, Tenenbaum also admonished Asian manufacturers meeting in Hong Kong not to substitute cadmium or other heavy metals for lead, which effectively has been banned from children's jewelry and toys.

Well, not really.
They have what, almost a half million workers, and the suicide rate for this size of population over that period of tmie is less than the Chinese national avergae.

Foxconn is the biggest PC parts maker in the world. Chances are that every single PC/MAC of users of this form has at least one Foxconn bit in them.

.

As noted above, the suicide rate for the province is in the "average" range. And people commit suicide for a wide spectrum of reasons. The OP article seems quite slanted to me with a goal of sensationalizing the issue and demonizing the Foxconn corporation. Maybe warranted, maybe not. But if one reads around for other resources/input to the story it paints a much less "evil image" of the Foxconn company.

Sure to pissoff/enrage some by mentioning, but apparently Foxconn (according to BBC article) has a policy of paying compensation to the family 100,000 yuan for any worker killed on company property. Am going to morbidly speculate wildly that this policy has at least to some degree contributed to the present numbers in the statistics. (because deep down i am one cold hearted bastard...)

There is a suspicion being floated that some of the people who committed suicide, did it for money. The math works like this: the average employee earns about 2,000 yuan per month ($295:£200), but the company pays 100,000 yuan compensation to the family of anyone dying on site. To an unstable 20 year-old, the thought of that much money going to their parents could be attractive.

This can also explain why they are jumping... It makes perfect sense, but probably everything in the factory cannot kill you so jumping is the only way to die.... I'm being cynical, but the point is that blaming a company from hiding a few suicides is the PR damage control, not to run away from the problem.

Chinese Gov't is a strange regime, with Marxism enshrined, they are harming the rights of working people.

Free unions are still not permitted. The national "workers' association" and its branches do nothing but spreading some towels during holidays....

So sure? When US soldiers did something wrong to the Iraqis and Afghans, who stood up to them? Police paper spray old lady? Police department harassing Latinos? Sometimes fear of authority and crowd mentality takes over. It's why it took only a few hundreds Nazis to kill millions of jews.

You don't need unions, you need a constitutional republic.

Are you implying that it was only the workers' own fault to commit suicide?

Have you been in a factory? When you blaming the workers, try the working environment yourself.

Try a F. W. Tylor-style factory yourself...
