So the News Media in the 'Democratic' USA are according to an International organization called 'Reporters without Borders' 53rd in terms of press freedom, whereas the UK is 27th.
Wow, these two country's claim to be the most democratic in the entire world, so if their Press reporting restrictions place them in these positions, it says volumes for their sense of what democracy means.

This doesn't surprise me.

How strange that DANERHEA, TOT, NAVY PRIDE as well as all the other folk who post on these threads, do not seek to dispute this claim.
Guess they recognise the reality and truth of the claim.

Interesting choice of names. Danerhea would probably agree with this story. TOT would launch into his data dumping to disprove it. And I make it my personal policy not to talk about Pride since we ended hostilities. Besides, his team (Pittsburg Steelers) really suck right now.

But give it time. It's still early.

I wonder who's in first?

There"s a thread around here somewhere with the same story and the list.
The way the list is done is deceptive as it lists countries with the same rank in alphabetical order and then counts them down so the US is listed as 56th when it's actually 28th.
Based on some of the comments as to why countries rankings fell the whole survey is flawed. For instance it says..

Denmark (19th) dropped from joint first place because of serious threats against the authors of the Mohammed cartoons published there in autumn 2005. For the first time in recent years in a country that is very observant of civil liberties, journalists had to have police protection due to threats against them because of their work.

..so they lost points because journalists were threatened, not by the government but by the public.

This part does make sense though. I can see why the US lost points.

The United States (53rd) has fallen nine places since last year, after being in 17th position in the first year of the Index, in 2002. Relations between the media and the Bush administration sharply deteriorated after the president used the pretext of “national security” to regard as suspicious any journalist who questioned his “war on terrorism.” The zeal of federal courts which, unlike those in 33 US states, refuse to recognise the media’s right not to reveal its sources, even threatens journalists whose investigations have no connection at all with terrorism.

Here's the original report with the list. Finland, Iceland, Ireland and the Netherlands are number one but they are ranked 1 to 4 in alphabetical order.

Quote by Lefty Henry.
(Sorry but Reporters Without Borders are Hacks.)

What precisely do you mean by the word 'Hacks?

Most people read several news media outlets, not necessarily those who sell hard copy printed versions but also those on the Internet, I would classify many of the reports I read as absolute drivel, but even within these pieces there is hidden some semblance of truth.

Most so called Left Wing reporting is so slanted as to make one think they are writing about as well as in another Country.

Reporters without borders don't no what they're talking about.
