I am not personally a Trump supporter, but I can see how TDS has led to blind devotion to Trump, the martyr. Obviously he is being persecuted and the rage against him is perfectly irrational.

Taleb seems to generally approve of Trump's policies so far.

One of Taleb's examples is Trumps statement about illegal immigrants from Mexico, which the IYI and their followers interpreted as racism. I completely agree with Taleb that there was nothing racist in the statement. Illegal immigrants are coming from the Mexican border. If they were coming from Canada, the same statement would not be called racist. When Democrats complained about illegal immigration, it was never interpreted as racism.

The IYI are determined to hate Trump and will twist anything for that purpose.

And if Trump says something Democrats normally love to hear, they won't acknowledge it.

What we are seeing is blind mindless rage. A very normal condition for our species. Still, not very pleasant to observe.

There is nothing blind about hatred of Trump, unlike conservatives, we base it on his horrendous actions, his chidlishness, incompetence, criminal activity, fraud, you name it. The list can go on and on. Real things he has said and done. Real damage he has done.

Unlike the real blind hatred, what right wingers display all the time. The entire Obama presidency shows real blind hatred, a black liberal, must hate, and must make **** up to hate about it like right wingers do. That's because racist pieces of **** like Trump aren't trying to limit immigration from Canada or most European countries so there's no reason for Canadians to come here illegally. For them, it's incredibly easy to come here legally.

Ever heard the saying "only Nixon can go to China?" Or to put it another way...black people use the N-word all the time when referring to other black people, but white people can't say that. Context is everything, and when you're a political party is made up almost exclusively of white people most of which are very racist you don't get the benefit of the doubt in any context nor should you.

90% of African Americans have been voting Democrat for roughly 5 decades now. Look at any racial minority in America and they pretty overwhelmingly vote Democrat. As a result, when a Democrat talks about border security you can have a bit more faith that they really are only talking about keeping out the bad guys and not just everyone brown. Democrats get the benefit of the doubt when it comes to putting those words in context. But when you refer to the KKK as "some very fine" people and get 100% of the Neo-Nazi vote, the endorsement of David Duke, and you have a sitting Senator from your party say he doesn't understand why white supremacy got such a bad wrap... you don't get that leeway.

The Republican party is like a hitter who has a reputation for striking out looking a lot. Whereas Democrats are more like Greg Maddux. When a pitch is on the corner the umpire is going to give Maddux the benefit of the doubt and call that a strike and the hitter who strikes out 200 times a year can bitch all he wants to nobody is going to listen.

Remind you at all of how Republicans treated President Obama? What goes around comes around. The difference, of course, is that the previous Republican President left Obama and our nation in the middle of multiple protracted wars as well as the worst financial crisis in over 80 years. Meanwhile, Obama left Trump a booming economy and a radically improved perception of America around the world.

To start with, border crossings are way, way, way down since their peak in 2000. It is literally back to 1970s levels:

The vast majority of undocumented immigrants entering the US are not crossing from the southern border. What they do is fly into the US, and overstay their visas. Many of those undocumented immigrants are, in fact, Canadian. And yet, we don't hear Trump and his fellow racist xenophobes screaming about them. I guess they're too busy worrying about the shrinking numbers of brown people who try to cross into the US. By your own standards, that demonstrates the racism of the xenophobes.

There are all sorts of facts that Trump and his fellow xenophobes are ignoring, including but not limited to....
• Stricter border enforcement winds up actually increasing the size of the undocumented immigrant community in the US. When the borders were open, people came to the US for a few months to work, then went home. (This is known as "circular flow.") As the costs of round-trips rise, the incentive is to stay in the US.

• Speaking of incentives, the people who are coming to the US? Yeah, they're leaving bone-crushing poverty and high rates of violence. They will not be deterred by a dumb-ass fence that they tunnel right under, and then look for the nearest border patrol agents. To put this another way: When tons of people want to move to your country, that's a good problem to have. It is much worse when everyone is bolting for the exits.

• Speaking of incentives, wanna guess why southern border crossings are dropping? It's mostly because the Mexican economy has dramatically improved over the years, thanks in part to NAFTA (the "worst deal ever!!!" which Trump literally just renewed with a handful of minor tweaks). So, if we really want to reduce immigration from South and Central America, what we should do is help improve their economies, such as encouraging US companies to build factories there.

• Oh, and guess what? Immigrants (with and without papers) are good for the economy. Yep, that's right. Even given remittances and competition for some low-skill jobs, one key factor in GDP growth is an increase in population, particularly younger workers. The native-born US population is aging, which among other things means that we have more people collecting SS/Medicare and fewer people paying for it. This, by the way, is one reason why Japan -- formerly a capitalist dynamo -- is mired in an endless recession. Taleb in particular has no excuse not to know this, as he claims to understand economics.


We should also note that Taleb predicted that before the election, Trump would "tone down his bluster" once in office (wrong), would interfere less in foreign affairs (wrong), would harness popular support (wrong), would follow public opinion once in office (wrong), said Trump would likely bully the bankers into behaving (ridiculously wrong), get a "fresh start if not bully" Saudi Arabia (wrong), give tax breaks to the bottom earners (wrong), will bully Iran into a deal (so far, wrong). He did get some things right, but overall not a great track record.

Anyway. I could be here all day refuting the myriad lies, fabrications and delusions cited by Trump et al, but by now you should get the point. A rational policy would encourage immigration, not fight it. Siding with Trump on this? Not a good look for Taleb.

I personally don't think illegal immigration is a terrible threat, and don't know why the campaign focused on it. Republicans used to like it because it provides cheap labor.

Either way, it's illegal and should be controlled. But the current obsession is crazy. And the Democrat's reaction is also crazy, given that they want immigration to be legal. Everyone does.

Second, all of this border stuff is basically a social and legal construct. There is no inherent perfect number of immigrants, it is our choice to decide how many people can legally reside or apply for citizenship. Meaning we could decide, any time we want, to allow anyone to enter the US, reside and work.

Third, you should keep in mind that you being born in the US, and not in Honduras, is a huge stroke of luck on your part. You did not decide before you were born "Y'know what, I'm gonna be an American!" Nope, you just got pretty lucky not to be born into a nation mired in poverty and crime.

To put that another way: If you were born and lived in a slum in Tegucigalpa, and your family was threatened by gangs, you'd probably leave too -- and would not be too broken up about committing a misdemeanor by entering the US without papers.

But the current obsession is crazy. And the Democrat's reaction is also crazy, given that they want immigration to be legal. Everyone does.

The Trump administration is doing everything it can to reduce legal immigration, including cutting back on the number of asylum slots, attempting to terminate DACA....
