Believe it or not, there are many blind hunters in Texas. Some are lifelong sighted hunters whose sight deteriorated, and others have been blind since birth. A new device, which allows the blind to kill their prey without a sighted hunter standing behind them, is now on the market. It works by laser, and with their other senses, blind hunters, still with the assistance of sighted hunters, are able to distinguish the difference between prey and other objects. It is also rumored that at least one sighted hunter will be able to use the device to distinguish the difference between a deer and an old man's face.

Article is here.

I'm torn between applauding a new innovation that allows for further inclusion of the handicapped, aversion to firearms of any sort, and horror at the though of blind people with guns tearing through my very backyard.

I want blind people to have every opportunity that sighted people have.
But wouldn't it be simpler if we prevented both the sighted and the blind from killing innocent creatures for fun?

Do you buy steaks, ground beef, chicken, or other meats at the supermarket? Do you eat meat at restaurants? If so, then it seems to me that you want the best of both worlds. You seem to forget that most hunting is for food, and it is hypocritical for you to complain about the shooting of "innocent" creatures, while eating foods that others have killed for you.

How many accidents have their been with blind hunters? The media would probably start a frenzy around such a story, so I doubt its actually that dangerous. I don't see very much difference is safety between the old practice and using the laser.

No. As I've mentioned many times before, I'm a vegetarian.
My whole family is vegetarian.

Then I must at least give you credit for not being a hypocrite. You practice what you preach. However, I do have an honest disagreement with you. I am eating fajitas right now, and they are delicious. :)

Well, giving up meat was- initially- less of an ethical decision (although I've always been concerned about the welfare of animals) and more of a biological imperative; I've suffered from a condition called IBS all my life, and meat of any kind, along with many other foods, aggravates the condition.
You'd give up meat too, no matter how "delicious", if you had lived with the kind of pain I have.

But enough about that; I just wanted to clarify that my decision to cut meat out of my life was not initially or solely a matter of having high moral principles.
Meat is not a possibility for me (or my kids, who also suffer from this condition).

Simpler in a practical sense, but not in practice as there are FAR too many hunters (including myself) in the US to be stopped. Cool technological invention though.

Hey bro.

Welcome aboard. :2razz:

Hey it might help Cheney!.. he might avoid shooting his friends in the face now!

Cheney should at the very least have to retake the hunter safety course...or he may never have taken it at all...

but but since when are there rules on guns in Texas?

Probably no rules on guns, just on huting licenses and tags. Plus, Cheney's from Wyoming...I think...maybe Wisconsin...
