This idea ( not because it is the UK currently being targetted) is totally stupid.
How can anyone possibly appologize to those who were exploited by the slave trade?
How far back does such an appology have to go.
Are the Italians supposed to appologize for the Roman Empire having slaves or the Chinese or the Mexicans or the Arabs or the Egyptians. the list is endless?
Mankind has since time immemorial enslaved those whom it has conquered, it has bought and sold slaves even when it did not directly capture them in raids or warfare.
How can any Country possibly be expected to appologise for something that happened over 200 years ago?
Those involved are long since dead so they are unable to hear anyone living say 'sorry'.
The idea is ludicrous.
Who gains by such an appology?

When will the Japanese apologize for the rape of Nanking and the biological experiments in the north eastern Manchurian provinces?
Or should they be allowed to do what they do now? Continually deny such things ever happening and wait till all involved are dead and gone and erase from existence of the atrocities?
Responsible nations admit to their mistakes.

If the PM is apoligising for the UK as a whole in its history, then yeah I can agree.

However the British Black population are starting to go on about reparations paid by the relatives of the ones who endlaved them.

For example, if my great great great great great great grandfather owned a slave, the descendant of that slave will be entitled to ask for fiscal compensation from me. Yeah right, .

Don't fret over it....Christians are still waiting for their apology from the Jewish community for 'killing Christ'

Us British are still waiting an apology for you rebels dumping tea in Boston. Well...

Blair fielded this one adequately if you ask me. Of course he could have taken a better approach and completely ignored the question as irrelevant. It is not the responsibility of the Prime Minister nor the British people today to be held accountable for the slave trade. We no longer hold German's or Japanese accountable for their part in a war that took place a mere 60 years ago. We don't hold the Spaniards responsible for the Conquistadors extermination of the South American tribes. Americans cannot be held culpable for their ancestors wars against the Native tribes. By asking the question one effectively demands an acknowledgement that the issues do not warrant. The underlying reason may be a desire to push for 'reparations' (translation: free money for people on the basis of race and ancestry) which is not something that should even be of consideration.

Personally, I would have made a cursory note of the prejudiced actions of the past and then re-focused the question on issues of modern slavery of young women and children (sadly occuring right under our noses in Europe) and asserted a determination to punish those involved in the trade to the extent of my power. Leaving my audience in no doubt that black people no longer have a monopoly on slavery and that the misdemeanours of the long dead transatlantic slave trade are no-longer applicable to our society.

You are of course quite correct in saying that this is quite simply an exercise in attempting to gain Money from either the Nations which sanctioned Slavery and or the descendants of those who became rich on the basis of the slave trade.

What I would propose is that compensation is given in the amount that a person of that era would have been expected to have earned, without any increase due to inflation.
I would further suggest that any person who accepts compensation whether they be Black, Brown or indeed any other colour, as a condition of accepting that compensation, voluntarily gives up their UK citizenship and is given a one way ticket to whatever they deem to be their country of origin.

After all, we really have no need to hold these people against their free will, do we?

I can guarantee that should anyone actually accept these conditions, within 24 hours of landing in whatever their country of origin, they would be frantically beating on the doors of the nearest British Consulate begging to be allowed back into the UK.

The idea is ludicrous, even the idea of apologizing about what happened some 200 years ago is stupid.
The furthest anyone should go is to regret the actions of our forebears.
My forebears were brought into Europe as slaves, yet I have no interest in anyone apologizing or offering compensation.

I would never even consider compensation, not even with a mandatory deportation. Neither are necessary in regards to the former trade in slaves (Though the latter is perfectly acceptable in relation to the 'small boats' landing in the Canaries). I was however thinking that the point you raise would be perfect for destroying an advocate of such apologism or a political rival attempting to bandwagon it. Just fix the fool in question with a stern glare and ask politely for them to take a look at Africa and tell me if they honestly thought they would be better off if their ancestors had never been taken from there. They themselves have never been slaves to others and enjoy the freedoms of our society, so there can be no argument that they have personally suffered as a result of the slave trade and are thus not entitled to anything, even an apology. Loss of heritage? Cultural identity? Take a hold of your ipod, mobile phone, and the key to your centrally heated home with running water. You going to try convincing me that you lost out?:rofl

It would be worth someone attempting the argument just for the sake of the ferocity with which they could be beaten down. Preferably on national television. Question Time maybe?

Obviously not all Jewish people have this kind of view when it comes to compensation and their own families get the cheque.

Left Wingers have this horrendous guilt complex. Indeed, the bosses of the Metropolitan Police Force have decided to suspend recruitment of whites for three years and the Civil Service reckons that the town of Corby is 'too white' and therefore advised John Reid to employ people to work for the public sector in more 'multicultural' Leicester.

And such examples come by the binful.

No wonder people like Blair grovel and scrape - it's hardwired into the Left to hate themselves.
