For slavery? Not really. That would be like paying me reperations for relatives who died in the holocaust. I never met them, and their death didn't affect me, so...

do you belive blacks should recive reparations?

No and what for?Not one single person in the United was ever a slave in the United States. It is absurd to give someone something because of what happened to someone they do not know even know nor have they ever met.

You know, there are plenty of people in this country who have profited, indirectly, from the practice of slavery. They've inherited money and land earned by slaves, and businesses that used slaves. So, in principle, I could see why the descendants of those slaves might have claim to reparations from them-- for the same reason that the descendants of other victims of "crimes against humanity" have had valid claims to reparation.

However, it was not the United States government which owned slaves, nor the majority of American citizens-- even prior to Emancipation-- who profited from slavery. Since the time of the Civil War, the descendants of the original citizens of our Republic have been outnumbered by immigrants and their descendants-- with the influx of German-Americans (our biggest "white" ethnicity) and Irish-Americans (the second-biggest) starting mainly in the 1850s.

The majority of Americans now are not only innocent of the crime of enslavement, but they are not even descendant from those guilty. They have not profitted from slavery, directly or indirectly. How can it be just for their tax monies-- paid to support their government-- to be given as reparations to people they haven't wronged?

African-Americans are still disadvantaged in our society, and it is my belief that we should do something about this. However, we can not correct this problem through injustice, and we cannot help them become equal members of our society by treating them separately.

As much as I hate to say it. No not really. Why? Because maybe you were related to a slave? I read somewhere that over 70% of innercity black kids didnt know who Harriet Tubman was. I almost had a heartattack. How the hell can you scream for reperations when you dont even know why you should get them in the first place? What some black people need to get is history books. **** Goverment Cheese. History books. So they can learn about people like Elijah McCoy and John Standard. Then take a test. And if they pass. They get Goverment Cheese free for a year. Reperations. Psh.

That money has to come from somewhere, the advocates of reparations don't realize that when they say "the government" they mean the American people.

The American people don't owe black people ****, especially considering that black people are included in "The American People" and would be paying their own reparations, only disproportionately.

They shouldn't get reparations for the reasoning everyone else has posted.

I love that Chappelle's show episode... I'm rich bitch!

If Blacks did get reparations they would be handing at least half of it right back to Big Bro. as it would be Unearned Income, then when they die an additional amount could be taken per the Death Tax, and whomever inherited it would be taxed per an Inheritance Tax.

Add to that you local Sales Tax on whatever they would buy and any applicable property Tax, etc., and really, reparations wouldn't end up being worth the fight to get it.

Yes, but only blacks who are above the age of 150.

Blacks should only get reperations for slavery?

What about this?

I guess thats the part people tend to forget. The part that came after Slavery. You've failed to realize it's not just about slavery.

In answer to the poll question, no.

My take on this subject is that giving any given group of persons some advantage, perk, handout, etc., simply because they are part of that given group is not a great recipe for harmony or equality in our nation.

Personally, I'm not so sure that anyone should be given reparations for anything.

Neither do I. I just hate the notion some people have that blacks who ask for reperations are only talking about slavery. There's alot more to the issue.

I agree, that is an excellent point.

Well either that was the easiest debate of my career on this forum....or I'm high...

How does that entitle anyone to reparations? At times in our history, women weren't allowed to attend school/vote, people of dozens of ethnic/religious backgrounds were discriminated against in various fashions, and minorities of all shapes and sizes were treated terribly.

If the nation as a policy begins to offer reparations for something like this, who's to say where it ends?

I agree with this, humans owning an enslaving each other was a very sad sick part of life, and we're trying to stop it. At one point EVERY group has been on the recieving end. It's just life and the way humanity works. That doesn't mean we should have to pay because everyone deserves a share actually and everyone in the world would be paying everybody else and we'd just keep paying until the whole world went broke...or something, hehe...^^ Well you know what I mean...

But the reason African Americans are sking for reparations is slavery........

This country ows more to African Americans then it gives them credit. Today "we're" the gangbangers. 200 years ago we were the driving work force in this country. For the first 200 years of this country the economy relied solely on the work of slaves who worked for free. Over 200 years of free labour. Can you imagine that? If you take on let's say 12 hour workdays for say 250 days of the year(I'm being kind) at a wage of $5.15. Comes out to about $3,090,000 PER SLAVE. By 1865 there were over 4 million slaves. That comes out to $12,360,000,000,000.

If the nation as a policy begins to offer reparations for something like this, who's to say where it ends?

What do you mean?

At times in our history, women weren't allowed to attend school/vote, people of dozens of ethnic/religious backgrounds were discriminated against in various fashions, and minorities of all shapes and sizes were treated terribly.

See the thing is you can't compare sex to race on this issue. How many "people of dozens of ethnic/religious backgrounds " had their ethnic and religious backgrounds completely destroyed? Over 500,000 Africans were brought over to this country. Entire tribes were decimated. Cultures and religious backgrounds were lost forever. Families were destroyed. Children taken from their parents before getting a chance to learn just what their culture was. The indians kept their feathers...women got their rights eventually but african americans? The culture they were entitled to. Something every group of people takes pride in. Is gone forever.

No it's not. Slavery is just part of the issue.

Well every time I hear Black leaders like the Revs (and I use the term loosely) Jackson and Sharpton all they talk is about handouts for slavery......

Right. :doh . Please research the issue. I'm not for reperations. I find that if it ever becomes a reality it would be a hollow act by feel good liberals/conservatives to anybody who lived during the days where blacks were being beaten in the streets of Birminham however I dont see those who ask for reperations as completely insane either. I just like correcting people who think it's "just about slavery".
