In a near-repeat of the CIA’s ‘extraordinary renditions’, the regime of Turkish president Erdoğan is kidnapping dozens of members of the Gülen movement from around the world. Victims are now raising a serious accusation: secret torture sites are part of the repression. A team of nine media organizations from eight countries, coordinated by CORRECTIV, investigates.

The hypocrisy of the Erdoğan regime as it loudly decries the murder of Jamal Khashoggi while its agents kidnap Turks on the streets of cities around the world and renditions them to secret torture sites.

after our nation's own rendition policy the chickens have come home to roost
unfortunately, we are now without the moral authority to protest such abhorrent practices

Wrong.

The CIA directed their efforts at terrorists. The Gülen Movement is about as far from terrorism as an organization can get.

The US absolutely does have the moral authority to protest these Turkish actions.

Yup. America has her own black sites, and I have a feeling we even have one in Turkey too.

Tell that to Maher Arar, a Canadian/Syrian citizen who was detained on a flight from Tunisia to Canada by US officials during a lay-over at JFK Airport and then secretly rendered by US agents to Syria for torture and interrogation with American agents looking on and asking questions. He languished in misery for many months before a public outcry in Canada at his disappearance and de facto kidnapping forced his release from his Syrian captors. Turns out he was an innocent engineer on vacation with his family in North Africa and not a terrorist or a supporter of terrorism.

So, yes, the USA has lost its moral authority to criticise Turkey or any other nation for kidnapping persons at home or abroad. The Erdogan Regime is a dangerous authoritarian regime with neo-Ottoman dreams of a regional empire around it and the regime learned quickly that it can do whatever it wants and ignore international criticism because of the path blazed by US agents since 2001. If there is American exceptionalism which allows US agents to undertake extrodinary renditions and the setting up of black prisons for deniable detentions outside the Rule of Law then there is also Turkish exceptionalism and they can claim the freedom to use the same or varying tactics in pursuit of their own interests. We are all more at risk as a result of both exceptionalisms and both rogue states following such extrajudicial measures.

So Americans must clean up their own house, and the attached solarium at Gitmo, before the world will cede them back their moral authority in this respect. Americans today may still think they have the moral authority but many, many non-Americans do not agree. Whether out of ignorance or arrogance the US people have missed this reality for the most part and are now comfortable with such behaviour or conveniently blame it on the present day US Administration, but this predates President Trump and former President Obama and is thus a long term extrajudicial abuse which must be ended, both by Turkey and by America. "Do as I say but not as I do!" , does not cut it any longer.

Cheers.

Rogue Valley:

I note the conspicuous absence of American media outlets in your logo-collection of investigating news agencies. Get the American press out of their denial/silence in order to help publicise and end the extrajudicial abuses of both Turkey and America and then the world will be a safer place. The US media's global megaphone is the loudest on the planet and full exposure to the light of public scrutiny is the best antiseptic for this type of societal pathology.

Cheers.

If I had my druthers, a US media outlet would definitely have been included.
