I'm just going to toss this one out and see what you folks think... I think it's great!

CHICAGO, Illinois (AP) -- Bill Cosby went off on another tirade against the black community Thursday, telling a room full of activists that black children are running around not knowing how to read or write and "going nowhere."

He also had harsh words for struggling black men, telling them: "Stop beating up your women because you can't find a job."

Cosby made headlines in May when he upbraided some poor blacks for their grammar and accused them of squandering opportunities the civil rights movement gave them.

He shot back Thursday, saying his detractors were trying in vain to hide the black community's "dirty laundry."

"Let me tell you something, your dirty laundry gets out of school at 2:30 every day, it's cursing and calling each other n------ as they're walking up and down the street," Cosby said during an appearance at the Rainbow/PUSH Coalition & Citizenship Education Fund's annual conference.

"They think they're hip," the entertainer said. "They can't read; they can't write. They're laughing and giggling, and they're going nowhere."

In his remarks in May at a commemoration of the anniversary of the Brown v. Board of Education desegregation decision, Cosby denounced some blacks' grammar and said those who commit crimes and wind up behind bars "are not political prisoners."

"I can't even talk the way these people talk, 'Why you ain't,' 'Where you is' ... and I blamed the kid until I heard the mother talk," Cosby said then. "And then I heard the father talk ... Everybody knows it's important to speak English except these knuckleheads. You can't be a doctor with that kind of crap coming out of your mouth."

Cosby elaborated Thursday on his previous comments in a talk interrupted several times by applause. He castigated some blacks, saying that they cannot simply blame whites for problems such as teen pregnancy and high school dropout rates.

"For me there is a time ... when we have to turn the mirror around," he said. "Because for me it is almost analgesic to talk about what the white man is doing against us. And it keeps a person frozen in their seat, it keeps you frozen in your hole you're sitting in."

Cosby lamented that the racial slurs once used by those who lynched blacks are now a favorite expression of black children. And he blamed parents.

"When you put on a record and that record is yelling 'n----- this and n----- that' and you've got your little 6-year-old, 7-year-old sitting in the back seat of the car, those children hear that," he said.

He also condemned black men who missed out on opportunities and are now angry about their lives.

"You've got to stop beating up your women because you can't find a job, because you didn't want to get an education and now you're (earning) minimum wage," Cosby said. "You should have thought more of yourself when you were in high school, when you had an opportunity."

Cosby appeared Thursday with the Rev. Jesse Jackson, founder and president of the education fund, who defended the entertainer's statements.

"Bill is saying let's fight the right fight, let's level the playing field," Jackson said. "Drunk people can't do that. Illiterate people can't do that."

Cosby also said many young people are failing to honor the sacrifices made by those who struggled and died during the civil rights movement.

"Dogs, water hoses that tear the bark off trees, Emmett Till," he said, naming the black youth who was tortured and murdered in Mississippi in 1955, allegedly for whistling at a white woman. "And you're going to tell me you're going to drop out of school? You're going to tell me you're going to steal from a store?"

Cosby also said he wasn't concerned that some whites took his comments and turned them "against our people."

"Let them talk," he said.

It is nice to see leaders in the black community finally taking personal responsibily and trying to pass that on to their peers. Blaming the white man for the troubles in their community is nothing but a lazy mans cop out. In many instances "minoraties" have many more opertunities handed to them to help them succeed and I am glad to see them being called on it by someone like Bill Cosby.

:applaud

Finally a man "tellin' it like it is"!

Need not blame anyone else for your problems.
Sorry, the civil rights movement was YEARS ago and long gone.

A black man has the same oppurtunities as anyone else and a silver spoon shouldn't be handed to anyone based on thier color.

unfortunatly the behavior that cosby is talking about is no longer cofined to the black community. it is starting to spread through main stream culture.

Excellent point jcueckert13 unfortinatly many Americans have become lazy, blame everyone who isn't given me a hand out, bunch of sheeple. It is always someone elses fault instead of looking in the mirror and getting off there ass to change things for themselves, they want the hard working folks to carry there asses. It amazing but I would think most of those SOBs vote for democrats you know the american socialist party.

Well this is a very good article if you're not living in the hood. Bill Cosby has no idea what it is now to live in the projects. the level of education that exist in the hoods, the under-equipped schools, underqualified and underpaid teachers and principals. low curriculums and all kinds of lows that you can imagine. I'm not trying to make an excuse for them but as always you will find a group of people or a family with high regards for life trying their best to get out of this, work two or three jobs to send their kids to a better school and stay on the kids just so they can get out of the projects. But some of them aren't so lucky because this is the life they've been blessed with, theirs parents and grand parents lived here and so will their children and their grand children. What Bill Cosby need to do as a Professor is go down there and educate them. Not calling them out getting some tv time at their expense. That's what I think of that!

I respectfully disagree. They stay there because they are lazy.

Bill Cosby IS educating them. He is putting a ton of his own fortune into reviving the living conditions of the 'getto'. He sponsors several grants and I have read where he has done several talks. Ahem..this was one of them. What he is pissed at is they EXPECT his money. They demand it. But when he puts his foot down they call him whitey, cracker, or broken. The people he is talking to is the scum of the earth and he is doing his part to clean it up.

"Calling them out" is the best method. After all, how else do human beings relate? If someone never gives you a challenge - you have nothing to aim for.

First, Vauge, these individuals are not the scum of the earth. I would challenge you to prove such a statement beyond a shadow of a doubt. Furthermore, I would question just who you think this "scum" is and how you would be able to recognize them on the street.

Second, this problem has nothing to do with money or color. Frankly, I am appalled at the behavior I see in some of our more affluent neighborhoods.

Bill Cosby has sent out a message to all parents. Get active in your children's education. Do not expect anyone else to pick up the slack.

Yes they are - but I guess it depends on how you define scum.

So lets define it:

"Slang. One, such as a person or an element of society, that is regarded as despicable or worthless."
Link to definition

Men that beat their wives: Despicable
Can't read or write: Worthless
Drunk bumbs on the street: Worthless
Persons that condone said actions above: SCUM

I'll give you that wife beaters are despicable.

Can't read or write, worthless?

Perhaps they are uneducated. I doubt illiteracy makes a person worthless.

Drunk bums on the street, worthless?

"the VA estimates that more than 299,321 veterans are homeless on any given night. And, more than half a million experience homelessness over the course of a year. Conservatively, one out of every four homeless males who is sleeping in a doorway, alley, or box in our cities and rural communities has put on a uniform and served our country ... "

http://www.nchv.org/background.cfm

How many people sleeping under a warm roof can say they served?

"Persons that condone said acts above: SCUM"
Close, but you are a little off. A person who sits by and lets the things above take place without trying to help. . . Now that's scum.

LiberalFINGER, I was refering to the context of this thread. Bill Cosby said nothing about Veterans in the original article. The black Americans [sic] that are homeless and do not want to get out of thier situation or expects the government to intervene are indeed SCUM.

Blacks [sic] that cannot read or write and were given the opportunity in Public education are SCUM.

Homeless veterans are another topic and would love to discuss. Feel free to open another thread about them.

Vauge,

I had to read over the article again to make sure that I wasn't out in left field. Sometimes it helps to double check the original post.

Mr. Cosby said nothing about the homeless in this article. However, I would like to point out that you made a comment that the homeless were useless.

You deviated from the context. I, for the sake of healthy discussion, followed the deviation and clearly pointed out that being homeless does not make a person useless, just lacking shelter.

Sweeping assumptions are a dangerous thing.
