I'm not clear about the logic of this argument. Our withdraw from Afghanistan was set before Biden became president. Is the argument that if the withdrawal had been seamless and without bad things happening, it would have exuded strength in a way that the flawed withdraw did not? That doesn't seem quite logical to me. How does that work?

I definitely think the events surrounding the withdrawal from Afghanistan and the collapse of the Afghan government and military certainly informed the Russia idea of how they thought their invasion would go.

Could you say more about this?

You're asking idiots to explain their irrational thinking?

The Russians thought their invasion of Ukraine would result in Zelensky fleeing for his life and the Ukrainian Army throwing down their arms and deserting en masse like the Afghan government/military did.

Didn't cause it IMO but may have affected the timing. Putin observing the greatest military in the world retreating from terrorists and willing to leave behind untold amounts of hardware likely signaled to him the U.S. didn't have the stomach for another conflict so soon. Our command structure appeared disarrayed so that certainly factored into his assessment. I don't think he counted on the World uniting as it has.

Good point. A lot of people are saying Putin seriously miscalculated here.

It seems unlikely that he believed the US would consider sending troops into Ukraine, but you never know.

Agreed. U.S. troops on the ground were likely not a concern. I'm sure he figured he'd have this wrapped up in 3 or 4 days and the U.S. would largely stay out of it. The people of Ukraine had other plans. (y)
