Biden proposes banning Chinese vehicles from U.S. roads with software crackdown (1 Viewer)

Except this is about national security, not EVs or the cost of them. It's very similar to the legislation happening with TicToc.

Bull

It is about protecting the US auto industry not national security.

Tic Toc is about controlling media companies, ( while it is national security related) it is not about data about little Johnny.

The US can force Facebook to censor certain posts and have it kept quite, rather more difficult to do so with a foreign company and ensure it is kept quiet

None of whom would stand a chance if the market were flooded with Chinese EVs.
Possibly. But those are competitors and have not been banned.

You can buy a new Chinese EV for as low as $2,000.
Unlikely. I doubt anything remotely like that is a vehicle most Americans would be interested in buying.

Which has a range of 60 miles or so and very little safety equipment.

I don’t want a Chinese car with Chinese microphones, Chinese GPS, and a Chinese computer potentially sending my conversations and driving locations back to China. Then there’s the issue of Chinese EVs spontaneously combusting. I’m not going to risk burning my house down and risking my life to save a few thousand dollars.

Don’t care. Let them sell their crap to other countries that share Chinese “family values,” like dictatorship and abuse of human rights.

And what do you do that makes you think China cares about it?

Now do you care if the US government has that same information, and a far more likely interest to use it against you

So why would Joe Sixpack worry about the NSA doing it? At least the U.S. isn’t a communist dictatorship. 🤷‍♂️

Look at all the Jsn 6 protesters and how they were caught

Or all the anti vaccine people shut down by the government

Why is a country's supposed ideology your focus? The US government is much more likely to weaponize things against you

All cellphones are doing surveillance and your data is sold to anyone who wants to pay for it.

So why isn’t Huawei permitted to sell cellphones and install switching equipment in the U.S. and other countries that also have cellphones but are concerned about Chinese access to data? I mean, if it doesn’t matter?

The $2000 would work in NYC.

But China has a wide variety of EVs that range from being cheap to being high end luxury or performance sports cars. All at prices 30 to 50% less than US evs. Heck Tesla makes more money on its evs made in China than any other location

The NSA would have to give to Huawei the backdoors it wants installed on the equipment. Letting the Chinese government know what methods the US uses to spy on the world.

It is not the Chinese access to data that is the issue but keeping secret the US access to that data.

That’s punishment for copyright infringement. Has nothing to do with surveillance. Everyone does that.

It is about protecting the US auto industry not national security.
Unsupportable nonsense.
Tic Toc is about controlling media companies, ( while it is national security related) it is not about data about little Johnny.
More unsupportable nonsense.

Our country’s free speech rights are more expansive than yours.

The U.S. government cannot force Facebook, or any other social media platform to censor content.
Agree. Your post is “bull”.

Supposed ideology? I think it’s pretty clear China’s ideology is based on a rejection of individual freedom, democracy, human rights, and international law, except when it suits its purposes. It’s my concern when we trade with countries like that, because we should be trading with and investing in countries and people who share our values.

I'm not sure about the concern they would 'collect information on infrastructure', given that this it all pretty well online. But the potential for spying on people - especially using cars to conduct surveillance, seems to be an interesting one.

The notion of taking over cars and causing accidents as a form of terrorism is a potential problem with any car capable of remote access. The Chinese government could probably hack a chevy or a ford as well as a Chinese brand. It's also kind of unlikely, as using Chinese cars as a form of attack would be devastating to their export business. This is probably better addressed through legislation addressing all cars with this capability.
Yep. We've been in need of updated data privacy laws and addressing the potential threats of products being more and more connected with user data aggregation.

No, Huawei was banned mainly for national security concerns, including espionage.

Really

So a car driving down street is a security threat, that is bigger than someone just walking and taking video with a cell phone. What would be seen, a few pedestrians and lots of traffic. A huge security threat that information presents.

Chinese cars are an economic threat to the US, like the Japanese cars were in the 1980s. The US forced Japan to accept export quotas to help protect US domestic companies.

The US government forces Twitter, Facebook, YouTube to restrict content all the time, especially during Covid, especially during the 2020 election where the Hunter Biden laptop had restricts placed on it.

The US wants the ability to control social media, which it can regarding Facebook, YouTube etc, it has less ability to do so regarding tic toc

No, Huawei was banned mainly for national security concerns, including espionage.
No, they were banned because of copyright infringement and for allegedly violating US sanctions against Iran (which was ultimately dismissed). The truth is far more simple - Chinese products are bad for capitalism and the U.S. will look for any excuse to keep them out of the market.

because we should be trading with and investing in countries and people who share our values.
You can't put that genie back in the bottle. US support of right wing autocrats aside, if you end trade with everyone who doesn't "shares our values"(inane statement on its face) there will be serious downsides for the economy

How do you think they were caught?

Please, be specific and include supporting data/links.

“Shut down”, how? By who?

Again, please be specific and include supporting data/links.

So much non bull right

Chinese microphones, GPS trackers, and computers in vehicles sending data on millions of Americans back to CCP-controlled China, where every corporation and citizen is legally required to serve the state when requested, is not like post-WWII democratic Japan. China is an authoritarian dictatorship.

Your cell phone and its apps already do that. They don’t need to sell you a car for that.

So Johnny talking to his dad about his day at school is a national security threat?

Horseshit:

Nov 25 (Reuters) - The Biden administration has banned approvals of new telecommunications equipment from China's Huawei Technologies and ZTE (000063.SZ), opens new tab because they pose "an unacceptable risk" to U.S. national security.
U.S. bans new Huawei, ZTE equipment sales, citing national security risk

So why would Joe Sixpack worry about the NSA doing it? At least the U.S. isn’t a communist dictatorship. 🤷‍♂️
I guess for the same reason you’re paranoid that someone in China will hear your farts because secret microphones. 😂
