Your position is that job growth is only meaningful if you go back farther in time and measure from before the pandemic. That may be true, but it doesn't mean there was no job growth.
Sure, insofar as there was no guarantee many of these returning jobs would in fact have returned if not for things like the various stimuli, Paycheck Protection Program, etc. We should all be grateful for returning jobs.
