Its your illogic that makes no sense. Putin was quite happy to adopt a slower less aggressive approach to his oft mentioned desires to reconstitute the Soviet Union with Donnie acting to protect his flank. An American President of donnie's ilk makes for a useful idiot. Donnie adored Putin. He still does. Donnie is STILL even today defending Putin's lying disgusting, brutal attack on Ukraine, a peaceful country trying to make its way in this world. Donnie calls it "genius" on Putin's part. This entire incident over Ukraine as completely exposed Putin as the world pariah that he is and it has completely exposed Trump as his lapdog useful idiot.
