They absolutely know this is a dishonest deflection, yet double down on it.

"There are 9,000 approved drilling permits that are not being used," Psaki repeated on Monday. "So the suggestion that we are not allowing companies to drill is inaccurate. The suggestion that that is what is hindering or preventing gas prices to come down is inaccurate."
The claim deflects from the administration's policies hostile toward fossil fuels. Even as gas prices skyrocket to historic highs, the Biden administration is looking internationally — to Venezuela and Saudi Arabia — to supply American oil needs, instead of working to empower domestic producers.

Are they using the leases or are they not?

saying something that doesn't support a Trumpist narrative ≠ "deflecting".

At any rate, we are now embargoing Russian oil. You called for it. Are you going to also be blaming Biden for high oil prices?

Of course he will blame Biden now. Team trump has no honor or pride.

That article is one big whine. They couldnt even deny that they arent using the 9,000 unused oil leases they still have.

All they did was complain that the administration is anti-fossil fuels. Yeah, it is...they were clear on that while campaigning, they said they were interested in exploring and developing alternatives and encouraged oil companies to get more involved in that as well.

There's no deflection, the oil companies are playing the victim and no harm is actually being done to them.

Pure bs. The biden admistration knows full well why those leases are not being used. It's a dishonest deflection pure and simple.

Why would he? Headline are all they can handle.

Here's an interesting quote from the oil industry
"That accusation is a complete red herring," Bradbury told Fox Business. "It's really a distraction from the fact that this administration has paused leasing on federal lands, something that we're concerned about and something that we think needs to continue right away. The fact is that industry is producing at a higher level on existing leases on federal lands than in the last 20 years and these leases take many years to explore, to develop and produce on."

So high prices are do to pausing the new leases, yet they take many years to explore and develop. So new leases despite Fox News claims would do nothing for prices now.

How will leases that will take many years to work help oil prices now? All the while they are recording record profits now?

Just one article of many where the oil companies state that they aren't interested in expanding production. Thought this excerpt was interesting. It's not the WH deflecting it is RW media.......as usual.

"PDC’s end-of-year report Monday noted its extensive stockpile of hundreds of approved permits and drilled but uncompleted wells, which it said “represents an inventory life of more than ten years at the current development pace” — and plenty of additional drilling permits for approved surface locations are on their way, including for the locations that the company plans to acquire from Great Western.

In response to a question from an investor, David Lillo, PDC’s senior vice president of operations, said during the company’s earnings call that obtaining subsurface permits from the state “hasn’t really been a big problem in the previous years, even under the new rules.”

Anyone that thinks instituting fracking, XL pipeline, etc. would make a difference are in la la land. It doesn't work that way and would take years to make a difference.

Exclusive: oil companies’ profits soared to $174bn this year as US gas prices rose

Exxon, Chevron, Shell and BP among group of 24 who resisted calls to increase production but doled out shareholder dividends

The largest oil and gas companies made a combined $174bn in profits in the first nine months of the year as gasoline prices climbed in the US, according to a new report.

The bumper profit totals, provided exclusively to the Guardian, show that in the third quarter of 2021 alone, 24 top oil and gas companies made more than $74bn in net income. From January to September, the net income of the group, which includes Exxon, Chevron, Shell and BP, was $174bn.

Biden to release 50m barrels of oil in effort to bring down rising US gas prices

Exxon alone posted a net income of $6.75bn in the third quarter, its highest profit since 2017, and has seen its revenue jump by 60% on the same period last year. The company credited the rising cost of oil for bolstering these profits, as did BP, which made $3.3bn in third-quarter profit. “Rising commodity prices certainly helped,” Bernard Looney, chief executive of BP, told investors at the latest earnings report.

Gasoline prices have hit a seven-year high in the US due to the rising cost of oil, with Americans now paying about $3.40 for a gallon of fuel compared with around $2.10 a year ago.

The Biden administration has warned the price hikes are hurting low-income people, even as it attempts to implement a climate agenda that would see America move away from fossil fuels, and has released 50m barrels of oil from the national strategic reserve to help dampen costs.

But oil and gas companies have shown little willingness so far to ramp up production to help reduce costs and the new report, by the government watchdog group Accountable.US, accuses them of “taking advantage of bloated prices, fleecing American families along the way” amid ongoing fallout from the Covid-19 pandemic.

“Americans looking for someone to blame for the pain they experience at the pump need look no further than the wealthy oil and gas company executives who choose to line their own pockets rather than lower gas prices with the billions of dollars in profit big oil rakes in month after month,” said Kyle Herrig, president of Accountable.US.

The analysis of major oil companies’ financials shows that 11 of the group gave payouts to shareholders worth more than $36.5bn collectively this year, while a dozen bought back $8bn-worth of stock.

This apparent focus, rather than on further drilling, has caused some frustration within the federal government, with Jennifer Granholm, the US energy secretary, stating that “the oil and gas companies are not flipping the switch as quickly as the demand requires.”
