President Joe Biden warned Thursday that the federal government would respond to Russian aggression in cyberspace. “If Russia pursues cyberattacks against our companies, our critical infrastructure, we are prepared to respond,” Biden said in the White House East Room. “For months, we've been working closely with the private sector to harden our cyber defenses, sharpen our ability to respond to the Russian cyberattacks as well.” The remarks came hours after Russian troops invaded Ukraine and Russian hackers used denial-of-service attacks to disable Ukrainian government and financial sites. It is unclear what a U.S. response to Russian cyberattacks could entail. Through a tweet Thursday, White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki appeared to discredit a report that President Biden had been presented with numerous options for the U.S. to execute major cyberattacks against Russia. According to the report, the options included disrupting internet connectivity across Russia, cutting off electric power and disturbing Russian railway traffic. “This report on cyber options being presented to @POTUS is off base and does not reflect what is actually being discussed in any shape or form,” Psaki tweeted.

Would The Kremlin cyber-attack the US? That somewhat depends on Ukraine I think. If the Ukrainian military/people can make Putin's military invasion of their country painful and ongoing, and if they are resupplied by friendly governments like the US, then I think Putin will indeed cyber-attack the US. I'm virtually positive that Poland and the Baltic States will do all they can to send weapons to the Ukrainian military/resistence. What if they are then cyber-attacked by Russia and they invoke Article 5 of the NATO treaty? "Any attack on one NATO state will be considered as an attack on all NATO members." I'm not certain how the NATO alliance views cyber-attacks on a member's critical infrastructure etc.

I'd say that it's an exceptionally bad time for anyone to open an email attachment. We should probably just put a moratorium on that for a minute.

I don't consider a cyber-attack as any diff than a physical or "conventional" attack that accomplishes the same objective. Thus, Article 5 should just as well apply and be even more acceptable compared to a conventional physical attack, just as is a conventional engagement is more acceptable than a nuclear one. We should also supply Ukraine with all they need, incl tech advice, on responding to a cyber-attack by Russia. In both or all cases, any cyber response should be reciprocal and equal in the level of retaliation.

For some reason I don't think Putin is worried. He's seen the Obama puppet in action already. "Talk loudly and carry a little stick."

btw, have you heard about those "devastating sanctions" Biden was talking about? LOL!!

Can you ever post a decent thought, or are you like an African grey who heard its owners say "puppet" and likes the sound of the word so much it repeats it?

Oh. The truth triggers you. Too bad.

You are dismissed.

They're doing the same thing for Putin as they did for Hitler.

We're duped if we think anything but all out war against Russia, to bring down the Putin regime.

Trump probably fed him all sort of classified information as well,s o maybe that's why hes so brazen, he's got some traitor intel in his back pocket.

I'm not sure there would be much gain for them to do so. If they did it surreptitiously, the could certainly cause disruption in the US but that wouldn't really gain them anything. If they did it openly, it could be seen as an attack and Putin isn't going to want to kick that hornets nest unnecessarily. At the moment, the US public don't seen to want their soldiers directly involved in the conflict, which poses a practical limit to what US politicians can do. Blatant Russian cyber attacks would risk shifting that public opinion.

I'd expect that in this area, they'll be focusing on things like spreading false news and speculation on social media rather than direct cyber-attacks. Easier to do and more effective towards their longer-term goals (all the more reason not to fall for it of course).

The policy of the US should be to fill the houses of every Ukrainian with Javelin and Stinger missiles along with a quick guide for use and maybe big yellow numbers for which switches to flip in order to launch.

This seems like the SOP for either Russia or the US when the other invades a country.

With all that is happening, we have "Americans" such as the above trying to sow even more division in our country.

All out war would lead to mutual annihilation.

With all that is happening,

Which is what you have been wanting to happen for years btw

The US was divided long before Putin decided to invade Ukraine and it will remain divided long after he has left Ukraine. I don't agree with the partisan hackery but I have found that both sides are just as guilty of it, yourself included

I don't see why Putin would resort to a cyber attack on the US. What would he gain from it.

I think it far more likely that if a cyber attack were to be visited on the US it would likely follow other false flags like the "Iraqi anthrax" attacks that had FA to do with Iraq.

Anonymous has stated it is at war with Russia over its actions in Ukraine so there is the potential for a stitch up .

Whether a cyber attack should be considered the same as a physical attack/armed attack , one to trigger article 5 is, imo, strange to say the least.

You would think people who have been cheering for war in Ukraine would just be happy to see it going on without wanting it to escalate into a much bigger war with the potential to wipe out much of life on earth. And they say Putin is the only crazy in town!!!

I have no interest in division. Just truth.

If you think the truth is divisive, that points to you and your own personal problems.

What sanctions, et al, do you think Biden should impose and what that he is doing that shouldn't be done? Otherwise, you're talking loudly and carrying no stick.

Putin got user friendly info from Trump, in my estimation. Funny that Putin is speaking out against fascism and democracy, while Trump and the Rep/cons stoke fascism and the ruin of democracy in the US. Such an interlace. One in direct opposition to the other, working together against the one.

Hucking?

It might have been nice if Putin was sufficiently deterred from invading by the fearsome specter of strong resistance.

He apparently was not. He apparently was justified in his estimate of the support that the US would offer to Ukraine.

One wonders what his estimate might have been had Biden not been a useless, feckless, moronic buffoon of a mistake in the Oval Office.

Putin was withdrawing from an attack position around Ukraine in the time IMMEDIATELY before Biden bungled the Afghanistan withdrawal.

I wonder what made him change his mind.

It's not up to me to decide what sanctions. That's the Biden puke's job. And they are failing.

You hate Biden and you're still mad that your orange baboon lost the last election. We get it. Blah, blah, blah. Yada, yada, yada.

A cyber attack on the US would be a catastrophically stupid move by Russia.
Both the US and UK have spent the last decade building up cyber defences and hiring specialists like crazy.

The UK has raised spending on cyber many times and it's a large focus here.

The UK has a pretty good track record with this sort of thing with GCHQ going back to WW2.

For the sake of the nation I hope they do have a plan and it's a good one, but at this point it's more of the same old song and dance they give about everything.

They claim they have secret plans about everything but so far they have yielded dismal results. That's why his poll numbers suck.

They sure didn't do much when our pipeline was hijacked by hackers.

Do you really expect the secretive world of cyber security to announce its plans?
Why would they do that?
