Best Manga and Anime

A google search on Asuka Langley Soryu cosplay was fairly disturbing.

Was it as bad as a fat guy with a beard dressed up as Sailor Moon or a fat chick dressed up as princess Leia?

No, but the Japanese are the culture that thinks crotch shots of 14 year olds wearing frilly underwear is not kiddy porn.

It's a culture of pedophiles. The more you look like a 7 year old girl the more 'cute' you are and thus the more 'sexy' (it's the same word for them) and desired you are. It's almost as disturbing as the fact that they're eating dolphins.

Their laws are so weird. They cannot show underage girls photoed naked, but they can show crotch shots of those same girls wearing thongs, and they can animate a 14 year old being raped by tentacles. And their adult porn is pixilated.

Some of each. The girl in the image I showed is actually a good example of the attractiveness of Japanese women. However, the Junior Idol stuff I tend to find pretty disturbing.

It's more than just in their TV shows you know, it's an actual way of life for them. Their grown up women need to act like 7 year old girls to attract them. I remember going to Tokyo with my uncle and my cousin when I was a teenager and seeing all these stuff it made me feel like I'm in another planet where these things are okay.

I have a real fascination for Japanese history and culture, but it really is so weird. Some of their movies(Lady Snowblood for example), some of their animation, some of their comics, some of their music, some of their fashion(I admit it, I love the various loli fashions) are awesome. And then some of it make you feel like you need a shower right after seeing it, and want to take steel wool to your brain.

Thats just nasty looking.
The one thing I find funny about people dressing up like science fiction, comic book and cartoon characters is that the only people who look good doing it most likely do not watch the cartoons, read comics or science fiction stuff.

Back to the topic at hand.

I know many people have brought up "Neon Genesis Evangelion" as a 'must-see' anime. And while I haven't seen it except a few episodes on Adult Swim, I do agree. However, I disagree in that you should see it if you haven't already seen much anime.

"NGE" is a severe deconstruction of Mecha and Giant Robot anime. Because of this, I think it, along with all other deconstructive works, can be truly appreciated only after first viewing the preceding works that it deconstructs.

Again, I note I haven't seen any of these shows, but they are what I've come up in my modest research on the issue.

"Gigantor" / "Tetsujin 28-go" is the earliest anime of the Giant Robot genre. It was produced in the earliest-60's and was originally done in black and white. So if you want to see what a giant Robot show is like before all the cliches or tropes common to the genre became apparent this is a good show to watch.

"Mazinger Z" followed in "Gigantor"'s footsteps and was actually the first anime to have the robots be piloted within by humans. Because of this, the "Mazinger" franchise is what cemented the Mecha genre and is from whence all other Mecha anime are descended from.

One of the greatest movies of the Giant Robot genre is "Giant Robo: The Day The Earth Stood Still." It is an homage to Yasuhiro Imagawa, who has done work on the production of a variety of Giant Robot animes. I haven't seen it, but I'm guessing that if you want to get a feel for the mecha genre as a whole this would be the best thing to watch.

The "Gundam" franchise is probably the most iconic franchise of Mecha animes, and so shouldn't be discounted. One thing that goes against the franchise, however, is that it is a money-making machine, and therefore there are several different series in different separate timelines. This may make following the continuity of the show a bit confusing, so you may want to do your own research on the whole of the franchise. The first series is known as "Mobile Suit Gundam" and Western audiences probably know the series "Mobile Suit Gundam Wing" the best since it was aired in Toonami in 2000.

That inspired "The Super Dimension Fortress Macross" series. It is also notable for being the first to show Transforming Mecha. Of course, it was used (along with 2 other unrelated anime) to create "Robotech" which helped introduce American audiences to Mecha and anime in general (along with "Voltron").

Then there's "Neon Genesis Evangelion" which deconstructs all those animes previously listed. It has been said that "Neon Genesis Evangelion is a mecha anime in the same way that "Twin Peaks" is a cop show. This is what makes NGE such an iconic part of anime. This is also what makes NGE such a controversial topic as well. To really understand why you'll just have to watch the series.

"Code Geass", while it may not be a deconstruction of the Mecha genre, certainly plays with the genre and is very well critically acclaimed.

The Mecha genre got some reconstruction with "Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann" which, from what I've heard, is crazy awesome. Mecha got some further reconstruction with "Megas XLR," which is actually a western cartoon show rather than anime but is undoubtedly inspired by anime and is well favored as well (especially by 4chan, apparently...) and so deserves mentioning.

I would also like to note that so far we've only mentioned anime/manga and, to some extent, western animation/comics (primarily American).

However, I would like to note that after America and Japan the biggest source of comic books (and the animation derived from them) come from France and Belgium, the Franco-Belgian style.

Franco-Belgian comic books are actually more akin to Japanese manga than they are to American comics. This is likely because neither France, Belgium, nor Japan have had to deal with anything like the Comic Code Authority that the U.S. had to initiate for the sake of moral guardians. Because of this while comic books are firmly rooted as something for children or teens, especially for superheroes, the Franco-Belgian school sees comics a high form of art in their right and are highly praised for it.

However, it doesn't get near enough love from mainstream audiences, and so is pretty unknown on the global scale, overshadowed by American comic books and Japanese manga.

Because of this very little of Franco-Belgian comics are widely known outside of Europe. There are basically only three titles that have been turned into animated films or tv shows for the mainstream, and children is their primary target audience.

"Asterix" (8 animated films)
"Tintin" (a cartoon series)
"The Smurfs" (a cartoon series, probably the most well known title)

Two other titles deserve mention.

The first is the "Babar" series of children books. No, they aren't comic books, but they are French illustrated children's books and were adapted into a cartoon series, and so I think they should be mentioned for completeness sake.

The other (and quite far removed from the former) is the magazine "Heavy Metal." While the magazine itself is published in America and for American readers, it publishes primarily European comic artists and writers. Heavy Metal usually publishes either stand-alone short stories of segments of other published works. This magazine is a good peek into the flavor of European comic books, especially adult/erotic.

In 1981 a Canadian studio produced an animated movie that showed several stories from the series. It also has a rockin' soundtrack to it. I highly recommend watching it. Especially at night when you're nice and relaxed.

And in case you're wondering, Yes, one of the segments did inspire the look of and the protagonist for "The Fifth Element."

And while it's American I think it's so independent and such a good movie that it deserves mentioning here.

"American Pop."

It was directed by Ralph Bakshi and is a multi-general drama concerning a family of singers and entertainers. It's score is a great tribute to the history of American music. A major suggestion right here, especially as a breather from the more fantastic or surreal movies you'll watch or to watch as a double feature with "Heavy Metal" if you're in the mood for some musical appreciation.

The Asterix and TinTin comics own. By the way, the TinTin movie coming out this year looks awesome.

I haven't seen any trailers or anything. And I don't want to.

It's so rare than anything truly good comes out of Hollywood that I want to savor the few things that do.

I'm now going to look for the tv show on DVD.

After watching the cove the only issue legitimate issue with the practice seems to be the high levels of mercury, and our objection to it seems more based on Dolphins being cute and squishy, as opposed to health concerns

Sorta like some Hindus doing an expose on an American slaughter house

Paprika was a great film, in general

I refuse to read/watch vampire based **** any more. Seriously, if Twilight was not bad enough, it gave the world True Blood.

Have you seen life force? Not Anime, but it's a pretty craptastic vampire flick from hooper, that just happens to be on netflix instant play.

Older movie? I think I know the one you are talking about.

I strongly suggest One Piece animé or manga.

Some more animé/manga I would suggest:

Monster
Gurren Lagann
Spice and Wolf (it makes being a merchant seem so badass and isn't that long)
Fullmetal Alchemist (if you watch one of the animé it should be Brotherhood)
The Tatami Galaxy (nice and short as well as quite hilarious)
Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex and Ghost in the Shell: S.A.C. 2nd Gig
Eden of the East (same director as Ghost in the Shell series did this short animé series and two follow-up movies)
Paranoia Agent (same director as Paprika)
Gunslinger Girl
Rainbow
Fractale
