Americans should realize that government is, ultimately, their primary power, if the government represents them.

It guarantees them individual rights, it does many activities to help the public good and the people, it limits the harm done to them by powerful interests.

And that's why Republicans, who serve donors who want things bad for the public, are anti-government. They want to weaken government's power o restrain those powerful interests, to help people get a fair share of wealth, and so they attack government itself.

This was the big con under Reagan - a lie that government is the problem, not the solution - and it's been continued by Republicans ever since.

That doesn't mean government can't be 'bad'. An analogy is the police. They generally serve the public; need help and they tend to help. But they can do some bad at times; the public needs to reign them in at times. Commit a crime and you pay.

And of course, if Republicans actually fool people into electing Republican government, it's quite bad, it's the fox in charge of the henhouse, time to gut and pillage, gut and pillage. Hey, let's put hundreds of industry lobbyists and executives in charge of regulation, like Bush and trump have done, for example.

That's one of the key problems with Republican voters today; they've fallen for the con, and so they don't look for government to be 'good government'. They turned on America's system; don't appreciate good, dedicated government workers; they see them as parasites, and the more they're abused, the better. Will they leave? Good.

That's why trump demolished the USDA science division for example, to please his fossil fuel donors who don't like the science confirming climate change. Who cares it'll hurt farmers, trump will just tell them he loves them to keep their support, as a con man.

Government workers don't deserve more money.. Pretty plain and simple.

I am making the case that there is now a long record of lack of support of public servants, which sometimes is abuse, that it needs to stop and that your talk of cutting the pay of government employees is not helpful, so therefor you should reconsider.

Totalitarian doesn't have to mean 0 to 100 overnight. It can be 50 and next year 51 eventually over 50 years you reach 100. You don't think if someone brought Thomas Jefferson back to 2020 in a time machine he wouldn't look at the fed and say how did this gov get so big and authoritative?

No, I don't think he'd say that. I think he'd say, the economy changed incredibly, and called for new approaches to governing, which is exactly what he'd called for the people to do, to change the government to adapt to changing circumstances. He'd be appalled at how much power was in "elite" private hands, a new 'nobility' stronger than England's had been, at the media brainwashing of voters.

Government is always inefficient. It all boils down to motivation and a passing the buck mentality. In government, it's nobody's ass on the line, so works extra. Show me a city larger than 200,000, and I will show you a Municipal Building staffed by apathetic, surly and lazy friends, relatives, and posse members of the mayor.
