VERMONT SENATOR BERNIE Sanders yesterday denounced in harsh terms the impeachment of Brazil’s democratically elected president. As the Brazilian Senate heads toward a final vote later this month, Sanders described his position, set forth in a statement posted on his Senate site, as “calling on the United States to take a definitive stand against efforts to remove Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff from office.” He added: “To many Brazilians and observers the controversial impeachment process more closely resembles a coup d’état.”

Sanders also condemned the unelected center-right coalition under Michel Temer that has seized power during Rousseff’s suspension and is now trying to install themselves through 2018. “After suspending Brazil’s first female president on dubious grounds, without a mandate to govern,” he said, ” the new interim government abolished the ministry of women, racial equality and human rights” and “replaced a diverse and representative administration with a cabinet made up entirely of white men.” They are now attempting to implement radical policies that could never be democratically ratified: “impose austerity, increase privatization and install a far right-wing social agenda.”

Bernie Sanders taking a stand against the undemocratic removal of Dilma Rousseff which many are calling a coup. I agree with Senator Sanders when he calls for the US to take a stand against this process. Its clear that this was a process to remove Rousseff and then attempt to implement harsh neo-liberal policies and undo what the Worker Party has done in Brazil.

Brazil ought to go full-blown socialist. It worked so well in Venezuela.

Hillary and Obama won't do anything about this. It is approved by the NeoCona agenda and they are joined at the hip with those reprobates.

Good. Corporate coups are unacceptable, and should be denounced by everyone.

How about....

We worry about our own ****, and let the Brazilian people....you know, the millions of folks that allowed this to happen, worry about Brazil's ****?

I disagree, we are not the world police, this is a Brazil problem.

Look no further than the US. Corporations own our congress.

What can we do about it? Brazil isn't the US, it's not our fight.

I am chuckling at the OP headline. A socialist is complaining because something isn't democratic.

I agree that it's a bloodless coup taking place, especially when you consider that the guy having taken Rouseff's seat has far more serious corruption charges pending against him, but what exactly does the US taking a stand against this process mean? What should they do?

I tend to agree, although the international community has every right to express its opinion or alter its diplomatic and economic relations with a country that undergoes extra-constitutional change, or even contentious constitutional change.

If something isn't democratic, it isn't socialist. Obviously.

I just thought it was kind of funny/ironic. I need some humor this morning.
Grats on the mod job.

Cheers!

I don't see the irony. I often see conservatives impressing on us all that the USA isn't a democracy, but a republic. Would you agree? If so, is democracy actually fundamental to the conservative ideology? It certainly is fundamental to socialism, even if it's so often ignored or undermined by so many self-proclaimed socialist régimes.

Now that is tongue-in-cheek. My, my. ;)

One could not say that his siding with the party of social decline is a surprise. But, as it is the position you would expect him to take.....

Denouncing actions of others countries is not being the "worlds police".

Re: Bernie Sanders Denounces Brazil’s Impeachment as Undemocratic, Calls for New Elec

What can we do about it? Brazil isn't the US, it's not our fight.

We could do a variety of things from simply denouncing the corporate coup to more severe actions such as trade restrictions, etc.

The US is not going to "take a stand against this" because it is highly likely that the US has already, covertly, taken a stand FOR it.

Recall that the B in BRICS is Brazil. Dilma and Brazil are being punished.

I'm glad Bernie spoke out, but congress will do nothing about it.

Unless something is affecting our interests or there is a genocide in progress*, I think we should generally butt out. (Not that Sanders statements are going to have any impact on Brazilian policy)

* Would we have done anything about the German Holocaust had Japan not forced us into the war? Probably not unless Germany conquered all of Europe and then sought to invade us, and even then it still wouldn't have been the reason for our involvement. I don't like to think that we will simply stand by when such unspeakable things occur.
