LANCASTER, Calif. — In the latest twist to this unpredictable 2016 presidential race, presumptive Republican nominee Donald Trump and Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders independently agreed Wednesday night to debate each other.

On ABC's "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" Trump was asked if he would consider holding a debate with Sanders. Trump agreed to the idea.
"If he paid a sum toward charity I would love to do that," said the business mogul, noting that a Sanders vs. Trump debate "would have such high ratings."
Sanders quickly responded with a tweet reading, "Game On. I look forward to debating Donald Trump in California before the June 7th primary."

Unlike the debates that were set up, managed and run by Debbie Wasserman-Schultz, using every tool she had to make Clinton look good, this debate promises to be outstanding. I'd love to see Bernie tear him down but that will probably just result in more votes for Trump.

An avowed capitalist debating an avowed democratic-socialist. If you're a political junkie this will be better than the Super Bowl.

Interesting and ironic. Trump has been a Democrat, Bernie never has been one.

The Dems are just shooting themselves in the foot and paving the way for a Trump upset. The party leadership needs to shut down Bernie- he's got no chance and all he's doing is handing the election to Trump by playing in his hands.

If they're smart both of them will focus their attacks on Hillary...

I'm surprised (but happy) that Trump agreed to this since I can't see how a debate with a candidate almost guaranteed at this point not to be the official nominee would help him in any way. Would Hillary agree next week to debate Ted Cruz? It's odd, but I'll definitely have a bowl of popcorn ready and "go away" written on my front door.

Bernie's getting his message out which is what he wants.

Sabotaging your own party is a pretty stupid way to go about it. The only people who like Bernie are socialists and millenials because they want free stuff.

I just don't see this debate actually occurring. It reads to me of news media cycle jumping on a Trump quote and Bernie response.

They independently agreed meaning that neither side has actually reached an agreement with the other. And while Trump put the caveat on the debate that he felt he should be compensated (in the form of charity donations), the details are still so vague as to be non-existent. Plus, the initial offer was made on the Jimmy Kimmel show.

And, of course, there is the influence of Hillary Clinton who would not want to just sit on the sidelines.

can anyone debate trump effectively? he easily swatted jeb bush like a fly, who is arguably on the same level as clinton. he also obliterated cruz, who is a fringer like sanders, just on the opposite wing. trump is a monster one on one, he's used to dealing with people much more competent than any politician.

I disagree that the Party is served by trying to control a candidate in this manner - part of Trump's appeal to date has been that the party opposed his candidacy and he claimed they were going to try to steal the nomination from him - the same would result if the Democrat Party, controlled by Clinton operatives, tried to silence Sanders.

Debbie Wasserman-Schultz and Hillary Clinton, both who tried to limit debates and keep Sanders from appearing with Clinton, are to blame for what's happening now. They've tried to over-manage a very damaged candidate's coronation and it's only made Clinton look worse and afraid and unable to hold her own.

I would note, as well, that neither Trump nor Sanders are really members of the party they are trying to lead. So if they damage that party in any way, they're not likely to be overly concerned. Trump will go back to business if he loses and Sanders will go back to the Senate as an Independent and life will go on for both.

I think you are right. While I would love to see it happen, I doubt it will. I suspect it will be Trump that backs out since he will have nothing whatsoever to gain by doing it. But you never know. The guy is unpredictable as hell.

This is low risk high reward type of maneuver by the Maverick Trump.

By debating Sanders he can embolden a candidate that has zero percent chance of winning the Democratic nomination and further cause deadlock for the DNC .

This debate can allow Trump to center himself with the moderates while Hillary continues get branded this corporate tool for Wall Street.

How very democratic, calling for the shut down of candidates whom you deem should no longer be running.

I think it's a lovely twist, a high profile debate that she adamantly refused to take part in. All that publicity, all that media coverage, all those people watching, and her name won't be anywhere to be seen. Maybe she can hold a rally and get a few dozen people to crowd together for some up close photos.

Lol Bernie's not a DemoNazi.

Honestly, I do agree that Bernie should drop out now, but further stoking and fanning the flames of division and infuriating Bernie's supporters by shutting them and their candidate out of the Party completely is not only... well... undemocratic... it practically guarantees a Trump victory (considering the fact that Independents make up 42% of the electorate of our country and they will unquestionably go to Trump if not Bernie).

Likewise, of course, Bernie supporters need to tone it down with the anti-Hillary rhetoric at this juncture.
But of course that won't happen if people like you keep pissing them off.

But you would rather see the Democratic Party divided rather than united.
So, go ahead and enjoy your Ethno-Nationalist Authoritarian Trump Administration, Mr. "Libertarian"...

The effect could be that Bernie is going in to duke it out and possibly damage Trump, and Shillary doesn't risk any exposure in the process, similar to what Warren is doing. Granted I doubt that's Bernies intention, but that could easily be the end result. And any momentum Bernie builds, he will probably do his best to shift behind her if things proceed as they likely will in July. All the people saying Bernie is sabotaging the Dems are overlooking that. If you can believe that Shillary and Bernie are capable of working together that closely at this time, it's believable that she had a hand in planning this to be honest.

Seems like there sure are a lot of 'socialists' in America then given Bernie's excellent favourability ratings and broadbased support of his policies.

That said, in light of everything the DNC has done to sabotage Bernie and play to a neoliberal agenda essentially dictated by money in politics, turn about is fair play. Beyond this, it's about societal good, not 'free stuff'; so the economy doesn't succumb to toxic, excessive wealth consolidation (the reason growth and inflation have proven so hard to achieve despite everything the Fed has tried thus far is precisely because all of its measures largely accrue money to those least willing to spend it), and your average person can enjoy a standard of living more comparable with that of Scandinavians than one on par with a semi-developed eastern European country.

Not interested. The DNC needs to taught that sometimes, when you endeavour to put your thumb on the scale and try to pervert democracy to sate the interests of an elite, wealthy minority, it comes away burnt. The best lessons are always the hardest ones.

I actually think this is a brilliant move on Trump's part. This is how I see the possible outcomes:

Trump Wins: It helps him in the general election and helps him with the disenfranchised Bernie supporters.

Trump Loses: Anything that makes Sanders look like a good candidate will ultimately hurt the Democrats as it drives another wedge between establishment democrats and their fanatical socialist wing.

Either Case: It makes Hillary look weak.

I saw a recent poll that said 20% of Sanders supporters would vote for Trump rather than Hillary. Trump is a shrewd opportunist so if this does happen I look for him to be as congenial as it is possible for him to be towards Bernie. You can almost see the wheels turning in his head as he plots his strategy of looking "Presidential" while holding things to no worse than a stalemate and not offending Sanders supporters.

If this event really happens, Hillary is going to come unhinged. She's probably going to lose to Sanders in California, anyway, but the exposure from this even could turn that loss into a blowout. Not good for her to be heading into the convention with that kind of negative momentum. She has a hard time generating enthusiasm to begin with.

I would LOVE to be a fly on the wall at Clinton campaign headquarters if and when they announce that this thing is really going to happen.

Actually, it's a brilliant move by Jimmy Kimmel and Trump was in no position to say no and he'd never say no to such a suggestion anyway. Wonder if Kimmel is going to be hearing it from all the celebrity Hillary shills in Hollywood who use late night TV to pimp their political nonsense.
