Bernice King calls Georgia lawmaker's arrest over protesting voting bill 'despicable'

Bernice King, daughter of the late civil rights icon Martin Luther King Jr., condemned the arrest of a Georgia state lawmaker after she protested Gov. Brian Kemp's (R) signing of a sweeping voting bill Thursday, calling the move by police "despicable." King during an appearance on CNN Thursday evening responded to social media footage showing Georgia state Rep. Park Cannon (D) put into handcuffs and escorted away from the governor's office. According to police, Cannon repeatedly knocked on Kemp's office door as he hosted a livestreamed event for the bill's signing. Law enforcement stated that they asked Cannon to stop knocking, but she continued. The controversial bill includes voting restrictions such as limiting the use of ballot drop boxes and setting photo ID requirements for absentee voting. It also makes distributing water or food to voters in line at the polls illegal. In response to the arrest, CNN's Don Lemon asked King to comment on "the idea that a Black Georgia state representative is being arrested and pulled away while the governor signs what critics call 'Jim Crow 2.0.' " "To me, it's despicable," King said. "It's obviously reminiscent of everything that my father, John Lewis, C.T. Vivian, Amelia Boynton and so many others sacrificed their lives for." "That we would not have to continue to use these kinds of efforts to stop injustice and, frankly, inhumanity."

In Georgia, you can now be arrested for giving a drink of water to someone that has been standing in line under the hot Georgia sun for hours to vote. Not even Russia has such oppressive election laws

African-American groups have decided to boycott large companies that are based in Georgia and contribute to Republican campaigns. The first boycott target is Coca-Cola. Delta Air Lines and UPS are next.

Its time for the SCOTUS to step up and toss these restrictive voting restrictions out and then endorse the Voting Rights Act.

Ummm...

What is it you want to talk about here?

1. Someone not liking that a lady got arrested for not following the orders of the police?

2. People being pissed of that it's illegal for then to give someone a drink of water?

3. Or, maybe, do you want to talk about the fact that both these issues involve black people? (You know...are you slapping down your race card?)

If necessary, kill the filibuster and pass H.R.1/S.1.
I wish California or NY would pass a law attacking Citizens United to force the SCOTUS to revised that very destructive decision.

Is there anyone on this site that can still say that GA's attempt to suppress votes is anything but a racist power play to hold onto minority rule?

Mycroft, could you give me your small government conservative opinion as to why I should go to prison if I hand a bottle of water to an old woman standing in a 5 hour long line to vote?

Why should anyone have to wait more than 30 minutes to vote? Get rid of computerized voting machines and give everyone a paper ballot with a pen. You would not even need a desk/table if they had a clipboard, or mail an abseentee ballot to every registered voter.

It's baffling. I've only had to wait more than a couple minutes once- it took ten minutes in our last provincial elections because of Covid restrictions.
There's no legitimate reason why citizens should be put through that just to exercise their right to vote. That's third-world despotism stuff.

edit- and every time I've voted I marked an X on a paper ballot and put it into the ballot box. It was counted by hand later.

So...it's the water thing the OP wants to talk about? Not the dumbass Georgia legislator thing?

I just want to be clear about that?

Wait...do you actually KNOW what the OP wants to talk about?

How many months should I spent behind bars if I give an 85 year old grandmother a sandwich or bottle of water while she waits to vote?

2-3? Or would you be more content with life in prison?

I ask for a paper ballot when I vote in person because it is ten times faster than waiting for one of eight machines. I am given a ballot, a clipboard, and a Sharpie. It required maybe 5 minutes to vote and then it is scanned at the country board of elections.
