Belarus' leader slams Russian talk of taking over his nation

Alexander Lukashenko, the President of Belarus.

12/15/18
MINSK, Belarus – The leader of Belarus on Friday accused some politicians in Russia of floating the prospect of incorporating his nation, and vowed that he wouldn't let it happen. Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko also criticized the Kremlin's plan to raise crude oil prices for Belarus, describing it as part of efforts to persuade his country to join Russia. "I understand what all those hints mean: You get the oil but you break up your country and join Russia," he said at a news conference. Russian President Vladimir Putin and Lukashenko engaged in televised bickering during a meeting of a Moscow-dominated economic alliance earlier this month, with the Belarusian leader assailing Moscow for its intention to charge higher prices for energy supplies to Belarus. Putin countered that Belarus would still get the energy resources at much cheaper prices than others, and noted that a deeper integration is needed to level the prices between the two countries.

Lukashenko on Friday cited Russian ultranationalist lawmaker Vladimir Zhirinovsky as one of those who have suggested that Belarus should be incorporated into Russia. "It will never happen," the Belarusian president said. "Sovereignty is a sacred thing for us." Lukashenko has ruled the nation of 10 million with an iron hand for nearly a quarter century, cracking down on dissent and the media. He has relied on Russia's loans and cheap energy to keep Belarus' Soviet-style economy afloat. Despite the close political, economic and military ties between the two ex-Soviet neighbors, Lukashenko has bristled at what he described as Moscow's attempts to subdue his nation. "Is Russia ready today to incorporate separate Belarusian regions or the country as a whole?" he asked rhetorically, warning Moscow to think of the consequences of such move. "How will people in our country and your country will look at it, what will be the reaction of the international community to that kind of stealthy incorporation of one country into another?"

Mr. Lukashenko, did you really believe that Putin would stop at Crimea and eastern Ukraine?

And this is another warning to Germany and Europe that Putin will use energy as a geopolitical weapon.

We know how Putin gets things he wants for Mother Russia the motherwhatever.

President Vladimir Putin opened his March 2014 speech marking Crimea’s annexation by reminding his Kremlin audience that the Black Sea peninsula was where Grand Prince Vladimir of Rus was baptised in 988 AD. “His spiritual feat of adopting Orthodoxy predetermined the overall basis of the culture, civilisation and human values that unite the peoples of Russia, Ukraine and Belarus,” he boldly declared.

Satellite photos reveal buildup of Russian forces on Ukraine border

Reports of four heavy-lifting Il-76 aircraft, used for the rapid deployment of troops and heavy military equipment, flying into Dzhankoi near the Ukraine border from Anapa have added to those fears. The 7th Guards Mountain Air Assault Division, an elite which also took part in the seizure of Crimea, is based at Novorossiysk — close to Anapa.

Ukrainian General Viktor Muzhenko told media last week that the strength of Russian troops facing Ukraine was at the highest levels it had been since Moscow invaded and occupied Crimea in 2014.

Defence analysts have also scoured photos available on Google Earth to reveal a build-up of 100s of Russian main battle tanks at freshly built or expanded facilities right on the border with Ukraine. Masses of trucks, tanks and stores have been assembled at facilities including Kamensk-Shakhtinsky and Valuyki, Belgorod Oblast.

Ukrainian media reports large numbers of Russian armoured infantry vehicles have also been seen crossing Moscow’s controversial Kerch Bridge into Crima.

Trump hasn't had a crisis action on the ground anywhere in the world since he became Potus/CinC. While Putin never played chess against anyone he couldn't put in jail, it doesn't take much to win at checkers and to say 'king me.' If Russia made this a real crisis and if I were Pentagon I'd lob a bunch of missiles in on 'em. Just give Trump a pen and tell him to sign on the bottom line. Let the Putin Fanboys in USA howl cause matters will become all the more clear about 'em.

You just salivate over the idea of starting a war against Russia .......... if anybody was insane enough to actually put it into action you wouldn't have a smile on your face for long.

@RV

Lukashenko has been playing the West and Russia with this game for years. But ultimately he knows which side his bread is buttered.

Just 18km from the internationally recognized border.....

Just waiting for Vladimir "The Peacemaker" Putin's order to cross the Ukraine border. (again)

The deployment of Russian forces in Russia is not a matter for other states.

Ukraine might cry about it - but it was always a very bad idea to make an enemy of your much more powerful neighbor.

Kiev will change its regime to something more sane in due course. But sadly, only after Ukrainian bothers have suffered more economic misery, and possibly more deaths in the cause of the US.

That is true.

I would be surprised if those were row after row of T-62 tanks in the photo above. T-72 maybe?

They look to be modified T-62 tanks to me. But you may be right.

You shouldn't have invaded Ukraine. It broke the UN Charter Russia signed plus these treaties with Ukraine.....

■ On Transfer of Crimean Region from the RSFSR to the Ukrainian SSR (USSR Supreme Soviet Presidium - February/April 1954)

■ Helsinki Accords (1975)

■ 1977 Soviet Constitution (Brezhnev Constitution)

■ Declaration № 142-Н of the Supreme Soviet of the Soviet Union (1991)

■ Belavezha Accords (Creation Agreement) (1991)

■ Alma-Ata Protocol (1991)

■ Joint Russo-Ukrainian Black Sea Fleet Agreement (1992)

■ Budapest Memorandum on Security Assurances (1994)

■ The Vienna Accord (1994)

■ The Partition Treaty on the Status and Conditions of the Black Sea Fleet (1997)

■ Russian-Ukrainian Treaty of Friendship, Cooperation, and Partnership (1997) (Article 2 - Reaffirmed “the inviolability of the existing borders”)

■ Russia and Ukraine Agreement on State Borders (2003)

■ Agreement between Ukraine and Russia on the Black Sea Fleet in Ukraine (Kharkiv Pact - 2010)

My eyesight isn't what it used to be.

Interesting they would put 2nd/3rd line tanks on the border.

Their aim would be to overrun. Not finesse things.

Indeed, overwhelm and overpower.

When Russians attack they're like any other formidable military force -- strike hard, fast, decisively, deep. Rout 'em.

Putin is broadcasting this buildup for everyone to see, to include Ukraine, Belarus, Nato and USA. He wants military respect from China too.

Putin is already changing the borders of Europe/Eurasia by force for the first time since World War II. As the world can see Putin isn't finished yet in his own mind. We'd need to change his mind now lest China get any ideas about trying to pull one off over there too.

You misrepresent me because you're a fool for Putin. And you misrepresent me grotesquely. The only smiling going on presently is Putin's mad grin in the Kremlin. Putin's been in power so long and out of KGB to begin with he looks to be going OTT. Power drunk with war fever. We've seen it before in Europe. This is a serious business.

US Army Chief Warns Russia: We Will Beat You Harder Than You’ve Ever Been Beaten Before

Army Chief of Staff Gen. Mark A. Milley was announced the past week as the next Chairman of Joint Chiefs of Staff. Not by accident either. The Nato Supreme Allied Commander is the Army General Curtis Scapporotti who previously commanded US forces Korea. Our many guys know your armed forces and their capabilities. You studied us so the Pentagon has changed and continues to change to meet your challenge and to overcome it. Putin knows this but he is anyway carrying on in even worse ways. Let's hope against hope Putin is bluffing because we can't say one way or the other what might happen if he isn't. There's USA domestic stability to consider also.

Mr. Lukašenka , did you really believe that Putin would stop at Crimea and eastern Ukraine?

And this is another warning to Germany and Europe that Putin will use energy as a geopolitical weapon.

"Sources: There was a closed-door meeting at Lukašenka . "By the end stand for independence. All supported it
Two unrelated sources told "Nasha Niva", which a few days ago, Alexander Lukashenko held a closed meeting with the participation of high-ranking officials.
On the agenda was the question of "what to do?" In the conditions of pressure from the Russian side.

"There was a big meeting at the president. [She said] to the end stand for independence. All supported this, "- said the first source.

"Some people in the government have expressed the view that for tax maneuvers need not answer clothes and reforms", - he told us also.

"The issue of Russia was raised. Among the instructions - follow closely the information field ", - said the employees of state structures.

Putin doesn't use euphemism.

Putin uses force.

Muscle.

It's all Putin and His Fanboys understand or respect. You got to put their hand over the flame to get through to 'em. Either that or just torch their ass a good one. Send 'em home without supper.
