Baseball pregame show prompts brief evacuation of U.S. Capitol

Capitol Police sent an email to staffers and media warning of an airplane but then announced there was no threat.

A pregame performance at a Washington Nationals baseball game featuring the Army's Golden Knights prompted a brief evacuation of the U.S. Capitol.

Capitol Police briefly evacuated the building Wednesday but then said there was no threat in a series of messages to staff members and journalists who work there.


"The Capitol was evacuated out of an abundance of caution this evening. There is no threat at the Capitol. More details to come," police said in a statement.

There was a miscommunication between Capitol Police and the organizers of the pregame events, two Capitol Police sources said.

The Golden Knights parachuted into the stadium, blocks from the Capitol, as part of Military Appreciation Night.

Way back in the day when I was doing emergency management training, during one of the hurricanes we had a guy who wanted to go up to the roof of the EOC and light up a cigarette. So he went up there. At the same time, one of the big whigs from FEMA or DHS was visiting. His security detail nearly took him out.

If they don’t get the heads-up, not much they can do. What this incident shows is that 15 months after 6JAN the inter-agency comms still need much work. FAA is headquartered not far from the Capitol. 9-11 was supposed to address much of the alphabet agencies isolation from a common information and communication intramurally.

Plus, all it took was a glance at ADS-B Exchange. I could track the flight from the time it took off.
