Barack Obama must also answer questions over the Lockerbie bomber's release – Telegraph Blogs

Quote(The Lockerbie scandal has just become even murkier. According to a Sunday Times report yesterday “the US government secretly advised Scottish ministers that it would be “far preferable” to free the Lockerbie bomber than jail him in Libya.”

The newspaper obtained a leaked document which reveals that Richard LeBaron, deputy head of the US embassy in London, had written to Alex Salmond, Scottish First Minister, ahead of the release of the Lockerbie bomber. The correspondence indicates that the Obama administration’s opposition to the “compassionate” release of the Lockerbie bomber may not have been as clear-cut as it has subsequently claimed. In the August 12, 2009 letter, the senior US official appeared to condone “a conditional release on compassionate grounds” of convicted Libyan intelligence agent Abdelbaset al-Megrahi, if Scottish officials were determined to proceed with the release of al-Megrahi against the wishes of Washington. As The Sunday Times revealed:

The note added: “Nevertheless, if Scottish authorities come to the conclusion that Megrahi must be released from Scottish custody, the US position is that conditional release on compassionate grounds would be a far preferable alternative to prisoner transfer, which we strongly oppose.” LeBaron added that freeing the bomber and making him live in Scotland “would mitigate a number of the strong concerns we have expressed with regard to Megrahi’s release”.)

The longer this story goes on without some form of an explanation from either Obama or one of his many apologists the murkier things will get.

Quote(As the piece points out, this clearly contradicts President Obama’s assertion at his joint White House press conference last week with the British Prime Minister that “all of us here in the United States were surprised, disappointed and angry” upon learning of Megrahi’s release. Here is what Barack Obama said when he appeared alongside David Cameron on July 20:

I think all of us here in the United States were surprised, disappointed, and angry about the release of the Lockerbie bomber. And my administration expressed very clearly our objections prior to the decision being made and subsequent to the decision being made. So we welcome any additional information that will give us insights and a better understanding of why the decision was made.
This latest revelation in the Lockerbie debacle should not diminish the responsibility of Scottish authorities in the disgraceful release of a mass-murdering terrorist who killed 270 people. Nor should it alleviate the pressure on the Coalition government to hold a full inquiry into the role of British government officials in the bomber’s release. But it does raise serious questions over the Obama administration’s own role in the Lockerbie matter, and whether it did all in its power to try to prevent the release of a terrorist responsible for the killing of 189 Americans.??

At some point valid questions will need to be answered.

I have to add that the Newspaper that printed this is a well respected British newspaper.

I am concerned with the lnaguage of the writer. ". . . or one of his apologists." A clear POV here.

Let me ask, is there good reason to not want him transfered to Libya?

I can only assume that had he been transferred to 'serve' his sentence in Libya that it would have been unlikely that that sentence would have been in any Penal Institution.
By POV do you mean Point of View?
If so then yes it is my opinion that when anything that is the responsibility of the W.H. does eeventually emerge, it is or has thus far been someone elses fault.
We obviously do not have a President who in spite of stating 'The buck stops here' has never had any intention of accepting responsibility for any news that casts his 'reign' in anything but glowing terms.

You made a bit of a leap here. POV does mean point of view. In this case, the pov of the writer. And your opinion aside, reporting would exclude opinion. The question I ask is a valid one. And you really didn't answer it.

The thread is fatally flawed from the get go...Obama 'must' not answer for anything.

I probably with hindsight agree.
Perhaps what might have been said was that, Obama is incapable of accepting responsibility for the words, deeds of himself and or his underlings.

Are you really asking if the person convicted for killing over 100 Americans, mostly college kids should have been freed???

It comes as no surprise the partisan writer from the conservative Heritage Foundation left out some facts.

...
-- The United States is not prepared to support Megrahi's release on compassionate release or bail. We understand that Scottish authorities are ensuring that Megrahi receives quality medical treatment, including palliative care, while incarcerated. The United States maintains its view that in light of the scope of Megrahi's crime, its heinous nature, and its continued and devastating impact on the victims and their families, it would be most appropriate for Megrahi to remain imprisoned for the entirety of his sentence. This was the understanding and expectation at the time arrangements were made for his trial in Scottish Court in the Netherlands, were he or his confederate to be convicted and their appeals upheld.

No, and no one here was arguing he should be freed. Instead, there was a lessor of two evils being discussed. There was a reason they did not want him returned to Lybia no matter what. The question is why? If you don't ask that question, you're not being honest with this issue.

I must be missing something on this one. Put politics aside, shouldn't Americans want this piece of cr** in jail for the rest of his life?

Damn, does anyone read or pay attention to anything. We wanted him imprisoned for life. That was clearly stated by us. The only part after that was IF you are going to do something, he cannot go back to Lybia. The question is why was not going back to Lybia so important. I suggest there was likely a very good reason. This piece of crap was an ex Lybian intelligence office.

So, put down the "I hate Obama" stuff and ask reasonable questions.

I could less about Obama on this issue as I stated above. So put your rants aside please.

This piece of junk should not have been sent to Libya there because they treat him like a rock star not the criminal he is. There was no reason to let him out of jail, period.

Hope this is clear!

Clear, but nothing Obama and his people didn't say. Realize we didn't hold him. They were going to send him to Lybia. Anyone commenting must have the factual information correct.

Are those enough reasons for you Boo?

For what? You're skipping the question and trying to plauy on emotion as best I can tell. Let me state it again. Obama and the administration did not want this person released. Stated so clearly. However if they were not going to listen us, the next best option was to make sure he did not go back to Lybia.

Damn, read, understand, and respond appropriately.

I do understand what you are asking, you would need to ask Obama or his administration why.
What I can tell you is that as a condition for his release, he had to withdraw his application to have his appeal against verdict and sentence in original trial.
From what I have been able to find out, I am told that there was a very good chance that his appeal would have been favorable.

I ask because I suspect there is a very good reason. Now you meantion the chances of his appeal being successful, which is anothe outcome we wouldn't like. Like many of these type ofstories, it really is much ado about nothing.

Political agenda?.... What's political about wanting a piece of scum that killed 270 innocent people to stay in prison until he dies?

If Barry had a hand in sending him back to his home country for a hero’s welcome and a life of luxury, Barry needs to be held accountable….. Do you have a political agenda that opposes that?

And publishing the names of the dead accomplishes that exactly how?

I think you are using this as one more excuse to hate the guy. There isn't one thing objective about your post. (And using "Barry" in reference to the POTUS pretty much proves my point).

And publishing the names of the dead accomplishes that exactly how?

Do you have a problem with the number of innocent people that were killed? Why do you have that problem? Just what is your agenda? (I've asked you that before, please answer)

Barry is the last known legal name for Barry Soetoro.... and he has used that name himself within the last year..... what's your problem with the name he uses?

President Barack Obama called in Tuesday to WTOP Radio’s “Ask the Governor” show with Democratic National Committee Chairman/Virginia Gov. Tim Kaine. Obama wanted to congratulate Kaine for his time as governor.

Obama was introduced on the program as “Barry from D.C.," a man who wanted to complain about Northern Virginia traffic.

"Mark Segraves and the governor's staff have been working on this for four months," said WTOP News Director Mike McMearty. "We thought it might happen, and today we got a strong thumbs up from [the White House] and tried to work out the logistics of how it would work."

McMearty says it was Obama's idea to call himself "Barry from D.C."
