Shortly after the Boston bomb one of my credit union branches posted a sign saying no sunglasses, no hats, and no backpacks. The problem I have with this is this very small branch sits right at the main entrance and hallway in a cubbyhole of a busy doctors office building, across the street from the main hospital. We are supposed to just lay our backpacks against the far wall in the hallway knowing no one would possibly think about stealing. It's important to note that it is in the center of 3 major hospitals plus a children's hospital and the states finest and largest medical school. Do they think that there won't be many backpacks, hats and sunglasses in this area? Where are we supposed to safely store our belongings why we try to get some of our money? I don't know if they posted this at the other branches. They aren't near as conveniently located as this main branch.

I think we're carrying this safety thing too far.

no hoodies also in our banks

Even though I do not like that either, that's far easier to take care of than leaving a backpack with hundreds of dollars of medical supplies and books or the parents with their baby supplies. Next, in my bank, they'll ban strollers too. That will be convenient being that the bank resides in part of the children's hospital.

Are there other banks you can do business with? Its always good to build a relationship with a local bank.

Ah - a lot of places around here have a 'no backpacks' and 'no sunglasses' standard. It's quite common - especially the closer you get to college.

I don't see how it's a problem for you. I don't grasp why someone even needs a backpack.

Men who work use to carry briefcases.
Women carry purses.
Teens are the ones who should carry the backpacks if they're in school. . . so are you in school? A med student? Where do you put your stuff at all other times of the day?

It's not their concern if you've decided to carry a backpack - and then chose to go to the bank. Use an outside ATM if you need to. In such an area, it seems like they should be all over (inside the hospital, etc) Don't tell me it's *that* big of a deal to where *every day* you're inconvenienced greatly.

If you were shirtless, would you be complaining that you couldn't go to the bank because you weren't properly dressed?

Sure, there are other banks but when you work over 50 hrs every week and your check is direct deposited into this bank shopping around isn't ideal, especially since it is in the middle of the medical center where I spend most of my time. Besides as a credit union member I "own" a portion of the business and have a great relationship with the people there. I just think it is a ridiculous and overly inconvenient policy in the name of false security. If this was a 'regular' branch things could be left in the car, out front but it is a branch whose customers are mainly on foot from around a five block radius of medical staff and students.

Instead of attacking me attack the topic. I can't even reply to the nonsense that post posed.

No sunglasses or hats doesn't seem too unreasonable - that's at least easy to comply with in the vast majority of cases. No backpacks is clearly impractical and if it's literally no back-packs rather than no (large) bags in general, it's pointless. What untoward things could be done with a back-pack that couldn't be done with a duffle bag?

Someone who has a number of things they need to carry and owns a backpack. What rational reason is there to object to a specific type of bag and not any other?

Sun glasses and hats seem silly but I agree it isn't too unreasonable unless I only brought my bifocal sunglasses  Backpacks? just stupid over-reactionary. This particular bank would be so much easier to rob by other means with the openness of the counter and so much traffic unrelated to the bank. If it was just about blowing things up there are so many other target-rich places in this area than this.

sunglasses and hats conceal your appearance.

large carries like backpacks can conceal anything and everything.

Purses and briefcases cannot.

The statement in the OP is that the rule is against "backpacks" though. There's no reference to size and no reference to large bags of any other style. Even if there could be rational in the intent (and even that is questionable), it appears to fail in the implementation.

The question of practicality still stands too. Expecting people to remove hats and sunglasses isn't (generally) a major imposition. Expecting them to magically make their bags disappear is.

Seems like you are already with a local bank (which was my suggestion), not a Bank Of America type. So, my advice is worth what you paid for it:)

So, my sympathy in the matter.

Wow. Where I bank I have walked in with a firearm on my hip, nobody even blinked. They called me by my first name, took care of my banking needs and wished me a good day... with a smile. In order to get my carry permit I went thru a federal and state background check and fingerprinting. Around here someone with a carry permit is considered one of the good guys.

The first time I saw that sign in my bank is when the cashier called out to an elderly man in front of me by his name "Mr. ___, your hat, you need to remove it" A very common hat that you see many 70+ year old men wear. I had to laugh they knew him and seemed to have a pleasant relationship but had to remove hat. At least they are consistent.

Yakkity Yak. If you want to use that bank? Don't bring a backpack with you. Take off your sunglasses and your hat. Just how difficult is that for people?

Did you read the opening post?

By nature of the location many people are walking around with backpacks.

Indeed. I use Ally Bank but for my day to day, I use Nevada State Bank which is a regional bank. But back in the day, I used smaller banks and got a lot of support when I needed it.

:nahnah: Just don't use facebook.
I opened up my Facebook page this evening and staring me in the face was a photograph of a young calf being tortured with electricity (I think). I flipped off of it so fast, I'm not sure.

This was posted by a friend of mine who lives out of state that I see every few years and talk to a couple times a year. Her post said, "Isn't this awful?"

Well, YES, you dumb ****, it's awful. Why did you think you had to post it on Facebook for all of your friends to see? They can't do a damned thing about it.

There are ways to make a difference. I know. I do some of them. I've adopted animals into my home, rescued strays, feed strays, feed raccoons, take injured wild things to the vet to save their little lives and turn them loose, paid to treat a stray dog that got hit by a car and found it a new and happy home, donate to the ASPCA every month and our Chicagoland no-kill shelter on a regular basis.

Posting a damned ugly pornographic image on Facebook that will haunt people for weeks does . . . wait for it . . . absolutely NOTHING.

Why, for the love of God!!! do people do this??

I have 6 backpacks, and I regularly use them for weekend trips, even if the trip includes a drive and a hotel stay because they are convenient. My Emergency Response kit and my Medical Response bags are both backpacks, issued to me by Georgia Emergency Management Agency. The other 4 are of various sized and work well for different purposes. My 3 season 3 day pack for hiking the AT weighs 17 pounds. I don't see myself hiking with a briefcase or responding to an emergency with a purse.

So what?? I just don't understand it. If you want to use that branch, don't bring a backpack with you. Take off your sunglasses and remove your hat.

In the Chicago area, that restriction is common to see in banks. I understand the need for it. You do, too. There are very few times when I even have to go into a bank. In fact, in the last year, I've probably stepped inside of a bank, ummmmm, never. The idea isn't that you're supposed to leave your backpack outside where someone can steal it, for heaven's sake. The idea is that you're not to bring one with you.
