On this day September 29-30, 1941 in a ravine called Babi Yar on the outskirts of Kiev Ukraine 33,771 Jewish men women and children were executed. On the 26th of September Major General Kurt Eberhard Nazi SS Commander along with others ordered the massacre of Kiev's Jewish population. All Jews were to turn themselves in for relocation or be shot. They were told to bring their valuables, warm clothing, and linens. Nazi SS Commander Col. Paul Blobel was in charge of the operation. They were expecting between 6000 to 7000 to gather at the designated location. Many more showed up expecting to be relocated. The Jews were taken to Babi Yar in small groups. They were told to remove all of their clothing and leave their belongings then were sent into the ravine. They were led through a corridor of soldiers until they reached the bottom of the ravine. They were made to lay down each was shot in the neck with a submachine gun. Then the next group was marched in. After awhile there were so many that they were ordered to climb up on the massive pile of corpses and then executed. Those that did not die right away were executed by marksmen, one by one till all were dead except a few who managed to survive by lying still among the dead. The marksmen climbed the pile of bodies to finish the gruesome task. On the evening of the 30th the Germans buried the dead in a massive grave by collapsing the walls of the ravine. General Kurt Eberhard committed suicide in a Stuttgart prison on Sept 8, 1947. SS Commander Paul Blobel was sentenced to death at the Nurnberg trials and was executed at Landsberg prison June 8, 1951.
