Vienna, 2022-04-26 – According to preliminary results by Statistics Austria, 9.027.999 people lived in Austria on 1 April 2022, which was 48.105 (+0.54%) more than at the beginning of 2022 (8.979.894).

An evaluation of the registration date of main residences shows that the 9 million mark was reached on 17 March 2022.

Thus, Austria's population increased more during the first three months of 2022 than in the whole of 2021 (+47.230 people or +0.53%). This increase is largely due to the refugee migration of Ukrainian nationals.

"Austria already cracked the nine million mark in terms of population in mid-March. The population has grown faster than expected due to refugee migration from Ukraine. In the first quarter of 2022, the population increased by around 48.000 people, a good 40.000 of whom are Ukrainian nationals," says Statistics Austria Director General Tobias Thomas.

That makes them the size of the 40th biggest city in the world.

There's a good chance we'll have more people than Hungary or Belarus by 2030.

There were times when Hungary had 11 million and Austria 7 million people in the late 1980s.

Belarus also had almost 11 million once, but both will drop to 9 million by 2030.

WOW! That’s more folks than live in New York City.

Hum. in august 2021, it was 8.8 millioin.. (I looked at the wrong city in the ranking)...but that is more than your source.

New York City had 8.468.000 people in mid-2021, down from 8.800.000 since Census 2020.

More than 300.000 New Yorkers fled the city during Covid ...

I think that a lot more refugees will come from Ukraine and remain here.

We could see a population growth rate like the one in 2015 with the Syrians, or more.

NYC has been losing population lately.

Correct.

But the 8.8 million figure is from Census 2020 and people were questioned between March-October 2020.

The mid-2021 estimates showed a significant decrease of 350.000 to just 8.46 million.

It will be interesting to see if people move back to NYC until mid-2022 or not (those estimates are only out next year).

I first read 'Australia.'

I don't know if I've ever eaten at a Der Weiner Schnitzel.

It is not a restaurant.

It is food:

Still pretty crowded by Canadian standards. The province I live in, British Columbia, is larger than Germany and France combined and has about 5 million people.
In several European coutries they would have negative population growth without immigration.

Hmm… a single-dipped chicken-fried steak without a gravy topping. ;)

Yeah, but I have an issue with the article:

"The Germans brought with them an Austrian dish called wiener schnitzel: a butterflied veal (or sometimes pork) cutlet pounded thin, dipped in eggs and bread crumbs, then deep fried until golden brown. The resulting coating, sometimes referred to as a "carpet of crumbs," is similar to that of chicken-fried steak, but the schnitzel is only dipped once in flour rather than twice, so the coating is a bit thinner and crispier. German settlers likely found that veal and pork were a bit thin on the ground, but that beef was in abundance, especially during the Civil War. During the war, Texas supplied the Confederacy with beef, which led to a steep rise in the cattle population. As such, the switch to cheap cuts of beef in the preparation of wiener schnitzel likely occurred sometime in the mid-19th century."

WTF ?

The Germans didn't bring anything with them to the US, we did.

It's like saying: "The English brought with them funny green costumes and established St. Patricks Day in the US."

There are some signs that some are going back. Too early to tell, but I suspect it will increase once the current surge is over with.
