Vienna (AFP) - Austria's government was licking its wounds Monday after a historic debacle that saw the opposition anti-immigrant far-right triumph in a presidential ballot two years before the next scheduled general election.

According to preliminary results, Norbert Hofer of the Freedom Party (FPOe) came a clear first with 36 percent of the vote, while candidates from the two governing parties failed to even make it into a runoff on May 22.

Fed up with liberal policies and fed up with the EU.

Good for them!
The rise of fringe parties has been mirrored across Europe, including in Spain, Britain and Germany, and also in the United States with the populist messages of Donald Trump and Bernie Sanders.

Yeah...you mean there might soon be a far-right Austrian in power. What could possibly go wrong?

The Europeans who would turn to the extremist right out of fear would be burning the house down to save it...

What has gone right, under liberalism?

The Europeans who would turn to the extremist right out of fear would be burning the house down to save it...

I disagree. The stupid asswipes who have allowed the Muslim hoard to enter Europe, are ruining Europe.

The dopes who voted in the EU, have ruined Europe!

I disagree.

Shocker

The stupid asswipes who have allowed the Muslim hoard to enter Europe, are ruining Europe.

Muslims are actually a pretty small minority in Europe overall, media sensationalism and the European Unions failure to act in a unified fashion to deal with the problem lead to images of thousands of refugees walking through Europe in huge clumps, leading to fear and divisive conduct on the part of many European countries

The dopes who voted in the EU, have ruined Europe!

Oh PALEASE!

Muslims make up barely 3 or 4 percent of the population of the European Union.

This fear, is entirely overblown and overhyped.

This rush to the extreme right is like thinking that the way to solve the problem of your house on fire, is to set the entire neighborhood on fire.

It is not like Austria has ever had a problem with far-right leaders before, oh wait.

This is great news and it's happening all over Europe. One can only hope our British brothers decide to do the same. I hear Londonistan is a terrible place to visit.

Extremism breeds extremism obviously.

Thankfully Austria isn't a very militarily-powerful country. A war with Austria wouldn't be as destructive as the war with Serbia in 1999 was.

Tell that to the families of the Paris and Brussels victims. Muslims refuse to assimilate. Their culture is the intolerant one. It is past time for elected leaders to deal with the huge problem. People are fed up.

Do you have a solution to the Muslim question?

Exactly how far are you willing to go to "Solve the Problem".

You'd hand the keys to extremists who could do more damage to the country than Islamic Terrorists could ever dream of doing, and the thing is, that's their goal, their goal is to force the us to overreact, force us to alienate Muslims, force us to change our way of life, they've succeeded and it's because of fearful people, silent in the face of government intrusion into our privacy as an example.

The terrorists are winning because we are so fearful we would turn to madmen to "Solve the problem".

Just look at those that would cheer Trump for his stance on Muslims...

coldjoint, you and people like you, with your attitudes, are part of the problem, not the solution.

I wonder what's causing that!

Could it be the crime spikes due to the "refugees"?
Nah....couldn't be. They're just poor widows and orphans!

Out of fear? So all those rapes and terrorist attacks are just figments of everyone's imagination?

Maybe if the donkeys who call themselves "leaders" wouldn't import these "poor refugees" en masse, people wouldn't be seeking shelter with the Far Right "extremists".

You are trying to transfer the blame. Europeans did not ask for terror. I guess you consider that a perk.

As far as being part of the problem I suggest you won't admit what the problem is. And if you did, you will still appease the intolerant Muslims while looking over the rainbow hoping for a miracle, that isn't going to happen.

These elected European leaders don't live next to refugees. They live in Crystal Spires surrounded by gates and therefore don't have to live next to the Muslim refugees they're inviting into the countryside. It's easy for them to pretend it doesn't affect the country since they don't have to confront the day to day grind that the average citizen faces.

The migrants commit crime at the same rate as native born Germans. All alienating Muslims will do is breed more extremism.

How exactly does opposing Muslims stop all this? You would still have the problem if the EU did not exist.

That's the problem when extreme leftist policies go too far. Nudge nudge wink wink. ;)

Yes we have seen how the EU has turned towards Fauvism. Austria, since 45 pretended, Oh not us, we did not collaborator, we were annexed, to France and Le pen, Greece and Golden Dawn.
Must make StromFront and those like minded Borg happy.

Muslims alienate themselves. They prefer to live where they are the vast majority(ghettos). They live by their laws. Unfortunately that is Sharia.

Let's see some statistics on that claim about native born Germans.

Well the areas that Muslims tend to to settle in large numbers are lower-income areas, because they are low-income. They settle where they do because of their income and people do tend to congregate around people of their culture and ethnicity, it is not unique to Muslims. All singling out Muslims will do is serve to drive them further from society and only cause more extremism.

Report: refugees have not increased crime rate in Germany
Police: refugees commit less crime than Germans
Straftaten "im sehr niedrigen sechsstelligen Bereich"

It also includes all refugees, not just Middle Eastern but also those form the Balkans that have similar rates as those from Iraq and Syria.
