"The monitoring app uses facial recognition and geolocation technology to ensure citizens are complying with stay at home orders. The state sends out random text messages, to which citizens must reply within 15 minutes with their selfie in the location where they are supposed to be. Failure to do so will spark a police visit."

This is assuming everybody has a cell phone. I know lots of old folks, who don't have them, and if they do, they are flip phones that don't allow you to take selfies, and if you turn the phone around, it's a crap shoot whether you get yourself in the picture.

Glad the US isn't doing this, but give the WH imposter awhile, he will mandate that one as well.

They must want fewer people in their country to die.

If Australia is depending on the tourist traffic to help their struggling economies, they are going to fall flat. I don't see many wanting to make the effort to go there. If you do go there, you may not be allowed to ever leave.

Before too many start applauding the measure, let me ask this.
Would we welcome "facial recognition technology" here, in general, covid/vaccine or not?
I remember reading some very negative opinions. Of course I could be confusing one technology with another.

Then they should ban abortion too.

I dont get this double standard- the same lefites who demand vax mandates are also pro-choice.

They must want fewer living and breaking people in their country to die.

While it's not a can that can be unopened, we should do everything we can to avoid it. Using it had many very negative implications.

For some reason, the Star Wars Imperial March theme suddenly popped into my head...

People who won't do their duty to the fellow countrymen and the nation should be marginalized as much as possible.

I'm tired of playing games with these people.

In times past when we have had crisis we have all had to do things we do not want to do and that usually involved young men being pressed into service to take a bullet for their country and sometimes bite it by the million.

A shot in the arm is a bargain in response to a cataclysmic world changing event on par with a World War.

I don't care if you deny the very real threat COVID is and I don't care if you think masks are silly and the vaccine is some kind of evil thing, I and most sensible human beings want to be able to move on from this ****ing disaster and if you want to believe crack pots and conspiracy theories, you can do so outside of civilized society.

They don't give a rat's ass about their citizens. It's all about their iron-fisted control. Ever heard of the New World Order? The world's countries are getting their people ready to receive the Mark of the Beast.

will fewer of their citizens die of COVID?

The Republican Party should have it as part of their platform to impose punishing sanctions on Australia until they repeal their medical fascism. I would impose a total immigration ban on all Australians, freeze all bank accounts owned by Australian nationals, withdraw all arms sales for their military, and impose an embargo. Unless they immediately pass a bill of rights for their people against medical fascism

Sounds like a plan, especially since China is threatening Australia.

I unfriended an Australian cyclist on Face Book over his socialist leanings. Now, I can't remember his name because I would love to ask him how that socialism is working out.

Hi bud-dies. As an Aussie, I am really amused at your replies. Australia has had some pretty savage lockdowns, border closures, and mandatory vaccinations. We have26.5 million people and we have had only 1,500 deaths, which I think you would agree is pretty damned good. We all moan about ithe inconveniences, but most of our state and federal governments have acted responsibly, and the public supports them. The reason why we have mandatory vaccinations is because we have in Australia socialised medicine. Now, I am no fan of socialism, but our medical system is pretty good. I myself was sent to intensive care last year for three days and it did not cost me anything at all. I understand that in the USA, you would have to have a lot of money to pay that bill. So, anyhoo, we figure that if somebody gets sick from the Chinese invented flue, if they are vaccinated, then fair enough you should get hospital treatment. But if you don't want to get with the program and you get very sick, then you are going to be taking up hospital beds which we think should go to more sensible people who got vaccinated, or who just need surgery. So we think that anti vaccers want it both ways. Our hospital system is taxpayer funded but it is not a bottomless pit of money.

I understand it is different in the USA. If you don't get vaccinated and you get really, really, sick, then it is up to you to pay the bill.

Australia worked hard at hotel quarantine, until it was clear that it just doesn't work. Something about a hotel room makes it impossible to just stay "home" plus security guards intended to keep people in had a repeated tendency to have sex with the quarantined people instead. Stockholm syndrome perhaps. Perhaps worst of all, people going into Australia (including returning citizens) had to pay their own hotel bills.

In that context, having to send a selfie at home (or work I guess) is quite libertarian. Why people think nothing of sharing location information or selfies with vast multinational corporations, or indeed with everyone in the world, but then they get Orwellitis over government demanding it for a good public health purpose, why it simply baffles me.

People without phones would obviously be exempt, which is why this will probably never happen. But if they're still so inclined, they should consider how easy it is to change the background of a selfie. You could in fact leave your phone at home, defeating both the selfie and the geolocation checks.

Australia has done well throughout Covid, and the increases now reflect the end of lockdowns and a confidence in vaccines to reduce deaths and serious illnesses. National double-vaccination is 90.9% (as of 3 days ago). Best state is actually a territory: Australian Capital Territory at 95%. Next is New South Wales 93.5%. Worst is Western Australia at 82.8% ... again, this is full vaccination.

You are ignorantly mistaken.
There is no face recognition technology in Australia.

If your having a swing at the liberal government, which I suspect you are, you should know the liberal government there is the equivalent to the republican government here.

Did I sum you up correctly?
