Australia’s Prime Minister ‘Surprised’ by State’s Secret Deal With China

The state of Victoria signed on with China’s Belt and Road initiative at a time when intelligence officials are concerned about Beijing’s influence.

Under President Xi Jinping, China has pledged trillions of dollars over the past five years toward the construction of roads, power plants and ports throughout Asia, Africa and Europe. The Belt and Road initiative, a key foreign policy of Mr. Xi’s government, uses big infrastructure projects as way to win friends and spread influence.

That money often comes with the requirement that Chinese companies be heavily involved in planning and construction, and Chinese employees are often brought in for the work, minimizing the immediate economic benefits to the country hosting the project.

“Howard famously argued that Australia didn’t have to choose between its economic relations with China and the alliance with the United States,” said Michael Clarke, an associate professor at the National Security College at Australian National University. “Clearly, both of those assumptions no longer hold with President Trump’s ‘America First’ approach and China’s assertiveness under President Xi Jinping,” Mr. Clarke said.

Wow. At this point its anyone's guess how long China has been influencing/infiltrating the governments of this and other Pacific and Asian countries in its orbit.

There should immediately be an investigation into the Victoria state government, make these corrupt politicians spend a long time in jail for bending to the will of China. We have known about this for along time, just people refuse to do anything because the Chinese have a lot of money and afraid of being called racist.

Conservatives go on about how illegal immigrants or refugees will lead to the death of Western values, it is the Chinese and the CCP with their resources who will do that. The Chinese have no respect for democracy or rule of law.

The horror of having roads, power plants, and ports being built in countries that suffer from a lack of them.

By god the Chinese should do it the traditional way, overthrow governments, bomb them, invade them and support blockade them

Australia is going to be in a very weird spot soon. Its economy is dependent on China, not as much as Canada is dependent on the US, but still strongly so. Yet its government is becoming more openly against China. To the point of spending a few billion to replace Huawei in build a fiber optic cable link for the Solomon islands

Absolutely incorrect.

In the last few years the great Xi Jinping launched an anti-corruption campaign to rid China of bad actors who broke the law, the fact they were all his political enemies is merely incidental.

And all those Uighurs locked up in Xinjiang, well, they’re just “at school”.

Hail the party!

Hail the leader!

The anti corruption crack down is real, business's that benefited from corruption (luxury good sellers, watches, alcohol, expensive restaurants) have seen business suffer since he took office

Why would we want them built by a nation that actively works to undermine democracy and the rule of law in Western nations and murders their own people in concentration camps, and promotes ethnic cleansing? The Chinese have done it the traditional way, Tibet and Xinjiang. These countries that accept these subsidies from China find themselves subservient to them and stuck in debt traps, meanwhile Beijing supports the dictators and corruption of those nations. The West should work to ban all PRC citizens with ties to the CCP and their money.

Those in the state government who agreed to the deal should be tried for treason.

I see you are getting your 50 cents from the CCP. He was targeting his political enemies and his own fortunes and those of his allies have grown substantially. How can you possibly justify defending the CCP?

Facts on the ground support the crack down in China. Starting in 2014 the sales of items commonly associated with corruption (giving of expensive watches, Moutai, expensive meals dropped drastically, despite the economy not declining

The proves nothing, how come no one in Xi's faction was taken down? Why are you defending one of the most evil regimes in the world?

What do you think the IMF and World Bank do? How about Greece, are they not locked into a debt trap. The countries that have borrowed from China still have far more debt with western countries than with China.

Greece's economy finally actually recovering. Except the West contributes a lot in foreign aid and at least tries to promote democracy with that money, China on the other hand just props up the dictators and promotes corruption beneficial to the CCP.

Evil please.

How many people in the last 35 years has China killed outside of China? Through invasions, bombings, the overthrow of countries that were not servile enough

So the mass murder of its own citizens and ethnic cleansing don't matter?

Democracy? Really?

Who do you think has more influence in the Middle East dictatorships? Which countries provide security support for them?

In the African dictatorships, who has more influence, Europe and the US or China? Which countries have military bases and operations in those countries (China has one base in Africa and it is small, right near the a major US military base. Central Asia is under Russian or US influence not China's. Only in NK does China have more influence than the US. Latin America? How many military coups occurred due to US influence? How many due to Chinese?

Which ethnic cleansing? The last major event involving mass killings was Tiananmen Square.

Why is it okay as along as its within their own borders??? Why would it be okay ...at all?

China employs the same strategy in East Africa, where economic assistance is desperately needed. If Victoria needs the same type of foreign investment to get the local economy going, it's a win-win situation. Australia's rural areas still remain surprisingly undeveloped.
