Atlanta mayor calls police depiction of motive in spa killings 'victim blaming'

Earlier at the news conference, Baker drew scrutiny for his matter-of-fact description of Long’s mindset.

“He was pretty much fed up and kind of at the end of his rope and yesterday was a really bad day for him, and this is what he did,” Baker said, adding that the businesses were seen by Long as “a temptation for him that he wanted to eliminate.”

The mayor countered the depiction used by Capt. Jay Baker of the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Department shortly after he pointed to suspect Robert Aaron Long’s assertion that “sexual addiction” rather than racism toward Asian Americans was behind his shooting rampage.

“We are not about to get into victim blaming, victim shaming, here,” Bottoms said at a Wednesday news conference, adding, “We don’t know additional information about what his motives were. We will not begin to blame victims, and as far as we know in Atlanta these are legally operating businesses that have not been on our radar, the radar of [the Atlanta Police Department].”
End quote

Why is it when "white men create horrendous crimes'.... its played off as "he/she was having a bad day", "they had not taken their medication", "they were just good ole boys having fun", and a long list of other phrases that try and sanitize the vile nature and inhumane acts they created'.

Baker's words were horrible for society, it amounts to an common act to cover up the fact that "another white man" is blaming others for his own conditions.

Then there is others, saying "Oh' he was a church going person, and deeply into religion".. (If that is true then why did he not seek professional help, ask his pastor to assist him to get help for his own mental obsessions)

There are many articles of how some, have long held a self delusion of Asian women as being passive and docile and submissive, and degrade them by looking at them as some exotic disposable pleasure toy.

Asian women working in these SPA's is not a sign of any weakness, the cultures across Asia have a long history of knowing the value of "healing through touch and body massage, aromatics, and many other health beneficial techniques". (People should read their history, they'd know the depth and character of these facts and they will stop thinking Asian women are weak and submissive and can be taken advantage of).

No society advance without strong women, and no society is sustained over centuries without strong women. The misperceptions of historical cultures, overlook much in how the real life roles of women have always been crucial and instrumental to the advancements in all societies.

Jesus Christ. Pointing out a hate crime is race related is "victim blaming"??? No, the blame is 100% on the person who committed the heinous murders and this guy's attempt to put some of the blame on Asians being Asians is disgusting and rejected.

I do wish conservatives would treat this sociopathic murderer with 1/100th the contempt they have for black protestors.

The shooter is a dirtbag. But I didn't get victim blaming from the press conference.

Maybe you did not pay attention...

Refresher For You: "

I've watched the press release multiple times. He's relaying info from initial questioning by investigators. No reporters or public officials seemed to take umbrage with it at the time. The fact that this horrible incident is being somewhat overshadowed and people are now focusing on the Captain is mind blowing.

NO... people are calling out comments that should not have been made. The investigation is ongoing!!!

If it was any other ethnicity that killed a bunch of white women, you'd be outraged if they were not called racist, and every other label that could be spoken, and there would be no thought to imply that anything the white women did was a motive or reason for them being killed.

One might want to consider that 90% of the Porn created in America features white women.... so why did this guy not target white women?

The sheriff saying the shooter killed people because he was having a 'bad day' is a VERY, VERY bad choice of words...

I don't know if it is victim blaming, but at the very least it sounds like the sheriff is minimizing the crime..

Furthermore what is either of those individuals' expertise which enables them to assess the psychological mindset of the murderer?

I agree it was a bad choice of words. I’m still not getting the level of outrage. I think people are making premature assumptions here.

He's answering questions from the press. I don't believe he is trying to open and shut the case, but relaying what investigators have found out thus far through initial questioning. I'm sure a ton more details will come out through investigation.

Sheez. How in the world would you even come up with this statement?

"We are still investigating"

How do cops not know by know not to offer opinions?

I have to agree. On the surface it just seems like he was repeating the information from the shooter about why he did it.

I could be wrong but can't just jump on the guy right away.

EDIT

A quick google search may prove me wrong.

The backlash against Baker compounded on Wednesday evening, when several news outlets reported that he had previously shared images on Facebook of T-shirts that contained a racist slogan about China and the coronavirus.

BuzzFeed News reported that in 2020, Baker shared an image of T-shirt with a logo that parodied Corona beer and read “Covid 19: imported virus from Chy-na”.

Perhaps there is more to it. What kind of sheriff captain posts crap like that on social media??

I'm no Trump cultist, but there's something wrong with our society if people are more outraged by the Captain than the guy who actually gunned down people in cold blood.

I have and I think you've booked an advanced ticket on the race train. Choo, choo!
You apparently did not try very hard at thinking, if that is what you came up with.

Let me help you: perspective

"Senator Ron Johnson of Wisconsin told a radio host that he did not feel threatened by the pro-Donald Trump mob that raided the Capitol in January, but the Republican would have been concerned if the invaders were “antifa” or Black Lives Matter activists."

(now do you grasp how I came up with the analogical comment: Senator Ron Johnson proves my point!!!!)

It was an ill-chosen statement. I have no reason to believe that he sympathized with the murderer, but it does sound like he was giving him a degree of sympathy by saying "He was having a bad day" rather than saying "The suspect claims that he was just having a bad day". That makes all the difference in the world.

I mean, I would hope that any day someone shoots someone else, that they are having a bad day. Who wants that to be on their good days?

You wrote: if it were any other ethnicity that killed a bunch of white women, you'd be outraged if they were not called racists. I'm not sure why you would even think that. Do you know anything about me?

If the perspective you are trying to convey is that you see things racially, then well done. 👏
