"On Monday, the hosts of Fox & Friends took on a group of atheists suing the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey over what they claim is their lack of representation at the 9/11 memorial. The group claims the 9/11 memorial celebrates Christianity because it features a cross of beams that remained standing after the collapse of the World Trade Center towers. The Fox & Friends hosts said that the group's claim was groundless and that the cross is a symbol of hope to the families of many of the 9/11 victims...".* The Young Turks host Cenk Uygur breaks it down.

Alright here is the deal, how about just put up a memorial to all faiths that lost their lives and one for the atheists as well, like an A or something. But FOX's coverage of this issue as always is idiotic and hackish.

But they are being represented. All the negative empty space between the other symbols of faith.

But 80% of everybody believes like I do!!!

Three fools, sitting on their my-religion-is-better-than-yours platform. Or, in this case, I'm better than you due to your lack of (my) religion.

They sit there and make a point of expressing their ignorance, and their ignorance is, in their opinion, good. You don't bar someone else from honoring their fallen too, and write it off as if it would be caving to political correctness. These people on their opinion/entertainment show don't deserve a Roman Cross at the site, just a big 'B,' for Bigot.

Maybe just leave out religious posturing from something like this entirely. People were murdered. Their religions or lack thereof shouldn't even be part of the conversation, any more than their hair color should be.

Meh. As an agnostic, my faith is represented by the sense of embarrassment I feel for all parties involved when I recognize this is a flippin monument to people who died in a political attack by religious extremists.

Well, in this day of Political Correctness, whatever committee decided on what to put there should really have included a cross-section of faiths. Hopefully it did. But to include aetheists? That doesn't make sense to me. We've made a mockery of many many things in this country trying to keep aetheists happy. This is just one more...

That would be fine with me. But people have a need to display their symbols when in pain. And that's okay, but everybody should be welcome, and nobody restricted due to selfishness.

Great point. But the religion that places its symbol at the top of the debris...wins.

It did not include a cross section of faiths. Only one, according to the video.

Would it be a mockery to include a Jewish symbol? A lot of Jews died there.

You do realize I said, "We've made a mockery of many things . . . to keep aetheists happy," yes? You're exactly right re many Jews died there. And that actually does beg the question about a cross being appropriate or not.

IMO, when the government is placing/designing a memorial (be it at the municipal/county/state/national level, it should be "faith neutral." I really don't think that's asking for much...we are a melting pot, after all. Like, I don't know, a dove . . . other symbols of peace . . . or symbols of freedom . . . or maybe just the American flag.

I really don't care about aetheists . . . but we are a nation of many faiths. So why just Christians?

Yeah, I agree, just the flag would be great. But my point was about the Fox show, and their incurious view of other people who don't share their religion.

I don't understand what you mean, that you really don't care about atheists.

I guess that didn't come out right, actually. At first as I answered your post, I thought, "Okay, let's form an echumenical (sp?) group" -- thinking the word would include all religions -- so I looked it up and it only means all forms of Christianity. In that context, thinking of all religions, I said I really didn't care about aetheists (being in that group) based on my initial thoughts. So I changed my answer to no religious symbols, 'cause that really makes the most sense.

I hope this makes sense. :rofl

10/4.

I agree. I think everybody should be included or everybody excluded in a case like this.

Made mockery of many many things in this country trying to keep atheists happy? Interesting, what would this list of many many things be, pray tell?

I'm not a believer by any stretch of the imagination, but this kind of logic I find astonishing. The vast majority of this country is religious in some sense, memorials for the foreseeable future are going to likely have some sort of religious intonation whether its symbolic or a reference to god. I want a secular government, but I'm really not convinced that the wall of secularism is falling apart because in the ruins of the World Trade Center people found a twisted beam of metal that looked like a cross and it give them enough inspiration and hope that they wanted it displayed on the grounds of the memorial. I don't think we need to dole out by committee a separate symbol for each group that signs a petition asking for one. By and large this is a fairly comprehensive memorial with few particular references, this object however was an artifact of the attack and figured prominently in media and memorial remembrances and it is more than appropriate for it to be there.

The majority's choice is often ridiculously (in my opinion) over-ruled for the sake of the minority. Our nation is 75% or more Christian. No nativity scenes on municipal property. No Easter decorations in schools. I shouldn't have to name them, Ikari, I'm sure you know them all.

2.....2 is many many? You don't have to name them, you overspoke. I'm sure you know this.

Oh, okay, Ikari. I should have said, "Many many times." Ya' got me. Dueling pistols at dawn. Me first. ;)

Putting religious symbols of all the victims up would guarantee no symbols at all, because you just know that at least one muslim had to die in the attack, and you really know how people are going to feel about the star and crescent sharing space with the cross and star of David.

By the way, I too agree that all symbols or none are displayed. It offends me that Christians would assume to monopolize the tragedy, and even more so that they're almost certainly oblivious to that interpretation.

Trying to keep aethiests happy? How about leaving the cross out and not make a religious statement. I think that should make everyone happy.

You're still exaggerating, but whatever. Dollars to donuts there are well more manger scenes and religious displays on public land than there are cases of atheists having stopped it.
